The Spanish Arch (An Póirse Spáinneach) in Galway city, Ireland, was originally an extension of the city wall from Martin's Tower to the bank of the Corrib, as a measure to protect the city's quays, which were located in the area once known as the Fish Market (now Spanish Parade). It was constructed in 1584.
In the 18th century the Eyre family of Eyrecourt, County Galway, created an extension of the quays called The Long Walk and created the arches to allow access from the town to the new quays. The Spanish Arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib directly across from The Claddagh.
In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami generated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Until 2006, part of the Arch housed the Galway City Museum. At that time, the museum was moved to a new, dedicated building located just behind the Arch.
The Long Walk is a promenade to one side of the Arches.
The apartment is right downtown, no need for a hire car unless you plan to travel to Connemara. However, Lally Tours have an excellent reputation for guided tours, and offer a 20% discount if tickets are purchased online.

We loved the location of this apartment! It was very nice and also had all of the things we needed. Ms. D was very easy to reach and quick to respond with any questions we had. The keys and all info were available upon arrival which was very convenient. The only drawback is the size of this apartment. Would be great for 2 people (a couple) but not really a great size for 3. Even though there is a small roll away cot for a 3rd person, it just got to be a little bit tight in the apartment. Other than that, we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this apartment!
Hi Sarah, I'm sorry that you didn't approve of the size of the apartment. The full sized single bed is provided for the convenience of guests who wish to have a third person staying in the one bed-roomed apartment. As I don't charge a per-person rate the extra bed is to help those who wish to keep their holiday costs down.
Ms. D's apartment was lovely, clean, well located and very comfortable, but what I was most impressed with was how helpful she was. From the moment I booked I felt comfortable and in good hands. Throughout our stay Ms. D continued to stay in touch, and was very helpful, giving us local tips, recommendations for places to eat & drink and answered any questions I had instantly.
This was my first AirBnB experience, and I honestly couldn't have asked for more.
Ms. D'S apartment was spectacular. We loved the beautiful scenic location along the Long Walk. The evenings that I was there were spent sitting by the water to unwind each night. The apartment was clean and inviting. Of all the places we stayed she had the best breakfast b selection of anyone. The host was really great with her suggestions of things to do during our stay. Check in was a breeze with her. The apartment location was terrific and within walking distance of city center yet was nice and quiet at night. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Galway.
The apartment was comfortable, well equipped and furnished, and generously supplied with food staples. Our host met with us as scheduled and gave us a warm welcome. She was easy to reach during our stay and responsive to our needs. Very well located, close to Galway's Old Town yet quiet and safe. The place was immaculate and had a great bed and shower. Listing description was accurate, and the apartment surpassed our expectations. Would definitely recommend it to others.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The apartment was clean and comfortable. It had all the amenities you needed. The host was very helpful and gracious. She helped us with all our questions. The location is a minute walking to the Latin Quarter so we were in the centre of galway's entertainment region. We would love to stay there in the future!
Aoife was extremely accommodating from start to finish. Her place is in a superb location, very central and within walking distance everything. Aoife house is lovely and modern....it's even nicer than the pictures on air Bnb! Very comfortable bed and nice bathroom/kitchen and sitting room. Aoife was very quick at responding on any query I had over the weekend and is very friendly. I will definitely be using her place again when I come back to Galway and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, contemporary place in a great location. Thanks! All the best, Emma
