The Spanish Arch (An Póirse Spáinneach) in Galway city, Ireland, was originally an extension of the city wall from Martin's Tower to the bank of the Corrib, as a measure to protect the city's quays, which were located in the area once known as the Fish Market (now Spanish Parade). It was constructed in 1584.
In the 18th century the Eyre family of Eyrecourt, County Galway, created an extension of the quays called The Long Walk and created the arches to allow access from the town to the new quays. The Spanish Arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib directly across from The Claddagh.
In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami generated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Until 2006, part of the Arch housed the Galway City Museum. At that time, the museum was moved to a new, dedicated building located just behind the Arch.
The Long Walk is a promenade to one side of the Arches.
The apartment is right downtown, no need for a hire car unless you plan to travel to Connemara. However, Lally Tours have an excellent reputation for guided tours, and offer a 20% discount if tickets are purchased online.

Mrs D was very helpful with advise on where to eat and where to hear music. She also provided fruit and was quite friendly.
Fantastic place in a great (email hidden) was kind enough to leave things for breakfast.great location close to city center.
Aoife has personally taken care of very well from the beginning by SMS and by phone that everything runs smoothly : so went arrival, keys and instruction from great. The apartment is very central, yet quiet location in the backyard and has everything you need for a few days. The location on the Long Walk is spectacular with splendid sunsets.
My partner and myself stayed in Ms Ds property for 3 nights over the New Year and we had a great time.
From the initial enquiry about booking the apartment to info about local restaurants, Ms D was very prompt and helpful with the planning of our trip.
The apartment is so central, we parked the car and forgot about it for the few days, everything in the city is within walking distance but it is in a quiet residential area, so you can get a good nights sleep.
The apartment was lovely, tastefully furnished, cosy and all the mod cons you'd need. The bread, milk and other basics which were supplied was a lovely touch.
I would highly recommend staying here and would definitely stay again!!
Had a great stay with Ms O'Connell, she was very welcoming and helpful in pointing out places to go and see as well as restaurants and bars in the city. The apartment couldn't be better located to visit Galway, as it is only a 2 min walk into the town. Ms O'Connell was also nice enough to arrange a parking space. Had a lovely stay a thoroughly recommend.
As my apartment is only one bedroomed, it will be rented out completely. It is a really lovely home! I take great pride in the comfort of my home, as its my first real base after many years of international work
