The Spanish Arch (An Póirse Spáinneach) in Galway city, Ireland, was originally an extension of the city wall from Martin's Tower to the bank of the Corrib, as a measure to protect the city's quays, which were located in the area once known as the Fish Market (now Spanish Parade). It was constructed in 1584.
In the 18th century the Eyre family of Eyrecourt, County Galway, created an extension of the quays called The Long Walk and created the arches to allow access from the town to the new quays. The Spanish Arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib directly across from The Claddagh.
In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami generated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Until 2006, part of the Arch housed the Galway City Museum. At that time, the museum was moved to a new, dedicated building located just behind the Arch.
The Long Walk is a promenade to one side of the Arches.
We spent NYE at Aiofe's apartment and had a wonderful time. The apartment is perfectly located at the quay, it's just a 2 minutes walk to Spanish Arch, to nice restaurants and even nicer pubs. Though being really in the middle of Galway, we had a relaxing and quiet time at Aoife's place. We totally enjoyed staying at her cosy little house. She had left everything nice and neat and she had even bought fruits and other ingredients for our first breakfast. She was the perfect host - answering very quickly to emails, being very nice and caring. We'd definitely stay with her again. Thanks Aoife!
We loved staying on the Long Walk in Galway over the holidays. The city has such a great spirit, and Aoife was so helpful and kind. She truly went far out of her way to make sure our stay was perfect. The apartment is a perfect size and well appointed. The kitchen was great to use (as everything in town was closed on Christmas) and the whole atmosphere was warm and inviting. If you don't pack a laptop you may have a slight issue with Wifi, but I'd imagine that if you let the hostess know ahead of time she can work with you! We would love to stay here again and again!
This place is fantastic. Very comfortable, and unbeatable location. It's right next to the historic Spanish Arch, in which there's an exceptional and charming restaurant called Ard Bia, and the city museum is right there too. Steps away from the main shopping, music, and dining streets. We never got to meet Aoife but she was very responsive, kind and helpful over email. Everything in the apartment worked great - shower, heat, stove, etc. The one surprise glitch was that the type of wireless internet available didn't work with my MacBook, but Aoife volunteered to reimburse us for any costs associated with using internet cafes, etc. - totally sweet of her and unnecessary! We weren't in Galway to surf the web so it wasn't a big problem. She even left us some whiskey, fruit for breakfast, and a vase of flowers that perfumed the apartment. Overall, it was an awesome trip and another great AirBnB experience!
Our host, Aoife, was wonderful. She had our accommodations prepared for a royal welcome----wine, flowers, groceries. When we met her, she took the time to explain the specifics of the unit and how to get around Galway. She also took such special interest in our background, so we felt like we had made a new friend. Great (email hidden)n't be beat!
A really great spot right in the perfect location. Aoife was super helpful with everything -- couldn't recommend it more!
Great location and nice apartment. Overall, a really great place to stay! Aoife was extremely helpful! She was gracious, quick to respond to all of our inquiries, and gave us some great advice about places to see in the Galway area. We would definitely stay there again!
Very nice unit - nice location on the quay. Remind Aoife to turn the hot water on before she leaves - it was three days before the timer kicked it back on.
Also -- if it is nice weather you will have to run the gauntlet of drunk chavs by the quay.
What a great place! Aoife (pronounce Efa with a long sounding E for those not from Ireland) was the most gracious hostess. She met me at the Spanish Arch and walked me to her apartment. It is steps away from the center of town, but quietly located in a center courtyard. If you go to Galway this is the place to stay. Thank You so much Aoife, if you come to San Francisco, please look me up!
We were unable to stay at this apartment last minute, however Aiofe was fabulous during the whole time of when we first contacted her till when we left Galway.
Aiofe went out of her way to take care of us and made lots of helpful suggestions.
Thanks Aiofe for your help and thoughtfulness. It was very much appreciated.
