The Spanish Arch (An Póirse Spáinneach) in Galway city, Ireland, was originally an extension of the city wall from Martin's Tower to the bank of the Corrib, as a measure to protect the city's quays, which were located in the area once known as the Fish Market (now Spanish Parade). It was constructed in 1584.
In the 18th century the Eyre family of Eyrecourt, County Galway, created an extension of the quays called The Long Walk and created the arches to allow access from the town to the new quays. The Spanish Arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib directly across from The Claddagh.
In 1755, the arches were partially destroyed by the tsunami generated by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Until 2006, part of the Arch housed the Galway City Museum. At that time, the museum was moved to a new, dedicated building located just behind the Arch.
The Long Walk is a promenade to one side of the Arches.
Being right downtown, there is no need for a hire car unless you plan to travel to Connemara. Lally Tours have an excellent reputation for guided tours.

The apartment was great, and in such an amazing location right on the water and only minutes from downtown! Our host was wonderful and made everything very easy for us, so I would absolutely recommend for anyone staying in Galway!
Description is accurate, nice place located very close to lots of nightlife. We were able to park very close and get in no problem. Place was clean and had all that we needed.
Ms. D was an extremely welcoming and hospitable host . Unfortunately we did not get to meet her in person as she was away but she kept in contact via phone and text and made sure that we had. Everything we needed. Upon entering the apartment there was a welcome note with further instructions on parking and other details regarding the apartment. The apartment itself was bright and welcoming, perfectly clean and beautifully decorated and furnished. The location of this property is truly ideal. It is in perhaps the most picturesque part of galway City, the long walk . Views of the sea and the Spanish arch are visible just metres from the entrance to the apartment- and it is also a stones throw from the heart of galway City. The bustling and busy quay street is 4-5 minute walk away ( you will find many of Galways best restaurants on this street). Overall we had an incredibly enjoyable stay here. It was made all the better. By Ms. D's warm and welcoming nature - we enjoyed ourselves so much we ended up staying an extra night!
The Long Walk is the perfect place to stay - close to the center of town but quiet enough to be able to relax at night and sleep in after a long night at the pubs. The key fob for the parking garage wasn't at the apartment when we first arrived but Mrs. D was sure to drop it off to us. Be sure to stop at Dock No. 1 for a Galway Hooker! Great host and great place to stay in Galway!
We stayed at Ms. D's lovely townhouse in late August. It was easy to find, very comfortable including the cozy bed, and was in a very quiet location making it easy to sleep at night. It is in a beautiful location right behind the historical and scenic Spanish Arch with easy walking distance to the train and bus station and near the most fun areas for shopping, outdoor markets, restaurants and pubs. Ms. D was a pleasure to work with. Absolutely thrilled with our choice and would recommend it to anyone.
Aoife was an amazing host! The apartment is beautiful and situated in the perfect location. We could not have had a better experience. I highly recommend this apartment and the generosity of our host to anyone.
