Description

The space

This is a uniquely beautiful Arts and Crafts cottage (roughly 110 years old), set in a Woodside redwood grove, both built and curated by local artists. The living area has a fireplace, a sofa, and a queen-sized bed. There is a bathroom and shower, and a small adjoining kitchen (with stove, oven, sink, refrigerator, and microwave), next to an outdoor dining/lounging area. The surrounding garden and grove provide plenty of space to sit with a cup of tea, and watch the sun streaming through the redwoods.

The Cottage and Environs
Built in 1905, the cottage is one of the oldest buildings on Kings Mountain, and contains many of its original architectural features, including rough-cut redwood beams on the interior ceiling, and exterior posts. Enjoy an environment nurtured by the unique artistic traditions of the San Francisco Peninsula, with paintings and sculpture by local artists. Local lore has it that a young artist woman, trying to escape the wild cosmopolitan life of Victorian San Francisco, built the cottage using only a few rustic tools and her bare hands, having driven most of the building materials down from the city by horse and cart. It has been remodeled and updated many times over the decades, but without fundamental alteration to the builder's original vision of a small folkloric cottage among the enormity of the nearby trees.

The Woodside/Kings Mountain Area
The sleepy community of Kings Mountain, California sits atop one of the highest peaks in the Santa Cruz Mountains, surrounded by redwood forest in all directions, full of hiking trails, and a 15 minute drive from miles of pacific coast beach. Situated on the Skyline Scenic Corridor and wedged at the convergence of three beautiful recreation areas (Huddart Park, Purissima Creek Redwoods, and The Phleger Estate) the cottage has more than a hundred miles of hiking and biking trails winding through the immediate vicinity. It is only 25 minutes from San Francisco to the North, 15 minutes to Stanford University to the East, 15 minutes to Half Moon Bay to the West, and 30 minutes to the heart of the Silicone Valley to the South. There is an excellent restaurant (The Mountain House) within easy walking distance that includes a bar. Just up the road in Skylonda is the famous Alice's Restaurant. The Troutmere Hatchery in nearby La Honda offers family fishing fun on weekends. Minutes away there are many small farms along the Pacific Coast Highway which are open to visitors. The region is renowned for its natural beauty, prolific local artisan community, wineries, and close proximity to other popular Bay Area destinations. Cyclists, hikers, art lovers, and nature enthusiasts will find Kings Mountain to be an ideal getaway. The community center across from the property is well-known for hosting the annual Kings Mountain Art Fair.
