About this listing
A top floor three bedroom in a red brick three story in the hipster haven of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, just 1 stop from Manhattan and within 5 minutes of 5 different train lines. Roof access and recent redecoration improvements since original listing.
We recently repainted the room a cozier sand color and the desk a softer green. We think it looks more elegant.
UPDATE (June 7, 2015): Apple TV with pre-setup Netflix and HBO Now available in room starting August 1 on new HD display added to room.
UPDATE 16 DEC 2014: Just painted the room to make it feel a bit more cozy and modern. Same furniture but new sheet set and duvet.
This top floor three bedroom apartment in this three story was a gem to find. Completely renovated two years ago and my friend and I were the first to snatch it up and have loved it ever since. Now I keep one room and rent the other two to airbnb renters.
The apartment also has a great roof accessed from our apartment that has great sunset views of Manhattan. (See photos, you can also smoke up here.)
You'll have access to the kitchen to use as you wish (but do your dishes! :)
Interaction with Guests
I'm a creative director and tend to work a lot and when I'm home I'm usually recharging unless I have friends over in which case I'm more bubbly. But I'm happy to give recommendations to guests for things they'd like to see or visit.
Williamsburg is amazing. Anyone who has lived in NYC for awhile can tell you there is an immediate difference in the energy of this place to Manhattan. It feels more neighborhoody, people are friendly and there's a creative vibe everywhere. You can't go into a bar or restaurant without bumping into designers, photographers, musicians, painters, web developer and the list goes on and on. There is music everywhere and lots of cheap drinks for the hipster crowd. It's a fantastic neighborhood.
The J, M & Z trains are less than five minutes and cross the Williamsburg bridge into Manhattan at the Lower East Side and its only 1 stop. The L and G trains are four minutes walk the opposite direction. The G train goes primarily south towards greater Brooklyn while the L crosses under the river into Manhattan at the East Village and is 2 stops. So in 15 minutes your in Manhattan door to door.
Other Things to Note
When you confirm the room the airbnb guide we completed has our favorite restaurants nearby, fun places we like to go, music and bars that we've done plenty of personal research to find. Guests that have checked out the restaurants in particular have really been pleased.
We've had a handful of people who are new to being guests through Airbnb and I think its important to know several things. The heat is via radiators since the building is traditional brick three story so can be uneven, so we've added a safe electrical heater in the room and guests have said its more than adequate to get the room toasty hot. Also, smoking is permitted out the window in the living room but not the rental room.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLERS: If you are interested in the room you can expect a response very quickly between 10:00am-7:00pm NYC time, a few people were sad they booked with others before they heard from me but it was 4am my time when it came in and I'm not checking my email til about 10 am daily and then as often in the evening. Just to let you know.
Be respectful of the apartment, clean up after yourself, if you have long hair please clean it out of the shower drain (as I'm bald so its not from me :) respect our neighbors, keep music at a normal level. Feel free to use the kitchen or hang out in the living room. Single guests staying longer than one week may bring individuals back overnight but must be discussed with us upon arrival. Door to your room has a lock to protect your valuables as well.
This is the second time I've stayed at Martin's super-stylish apartment in the past 12 months. The reason I came back is because I knew that I would have a beautiful, comfortable and well-decorated apartment to stay in my favourite part of NYC. Martin is a great host, very friendly, accommodating and a great personality. I would happily stay with Martin or recommended his place to friends and colleagues.
I stayed at Martins place for 5 nights, the flat is in a good location however most of the Williamsburg destinations are on the other side of the freeway (10min walk). Martin was very accommodating when I had some special requests, which I appreciated. It’s a social flat, I met several of Martins friends and the other spare room is rented on Airbnb so it felt quite busy at times. The flat is creatively furnished as per the photos.
I stayed at Martin's for 4 nights and really enjoyed all. A nicely decorated room with crisp linens. The manhattan view from rooftop which is so Brooklyn. And great neighborhood I could hang all day. I would definitely come back here someday:)
This was my first airbnb experience personally and one of a few this year for my girlfriend who also stayed with me over 4 nights at Martin's place. I could not have been happier with the experience. Everything from the communication with Martin beforehand and throughout our stay, to the location, and 100% accurate description/depiction of his place were all wonderful. Martin is a generous and thoughtful host and I would absolutely recommend staying with him to anyone wanting to experience Williamsburg.
Had 1 room for 1 week. Absolutely no complaints. The appartment is on a quiet street. Many restaurants, cafes, coffeeshops and boutiques in walking distance. I think the better part of Williamsburg is on the other side of the highway, but this is 5-7 min walking.
With the subway it's 2 stops to east manhattan.
Hardly saw or heard Martin. Good place to stay in NYC.

About the Host, Martin
I am the founder and owner of Ashanti Eaton, a web, print and application development company I started in Minneapolis, Minnesota where I grew up. I started it after studying abroad in Montpellier, France during my third year at the University of Minnesota and upon returning felt emboldened to really go after my dream of starting my own business. It's been going now since 1993 and I've had over 300 clients and offices in London, Prague, Minneapolis and New York.
I've lived abroad, including London for nine years (Covent Garden) and Prague for three years (Vinohrady). It's given me a much wider impression of the world than most Americans I know and I feel like my life is much richer for them!
I've moved to New York just a couple of years ago as the recession has taken its toll on my business just like everyone else's and keeping our Prague office open wasn't viable anymore. I'm trying to keep costs down so renting out the extra room while we gain new clients and make an impression here.
I like to spend time with my friends and when I'm home I tend to keep to myself and recharge the batteries and creative write as a hobby. I'm working on a few long form stories and a concept for a graphic novel.
