About this listing
A lovely (and large) bedroom in a beautifully appointed home in the best area of Chicago. Close to the lake, transit, exciting nighlife....not to mention complete with an overly friendly cat named Angus and a rather outgoing host
If you choose to stay with us, you give to experience something that straddles the lines of a little too perfect, a little too quirky, a little too posh, and a little too Martha Stewart. The flat is in a creeky-old, yet very typical, Chicago building. It is on the 8 step elevated ground floor and is blessed with broad expanses of windows that face into a courtyard.
Our home was once four separate apartments that have been stitched together. Each retains all of it's original character and is a mix of modern elements introduced into the vintage building. This bedroom is about 15' by 15' with a wall of windows and is what would be the formal 'dining room' for one of the flats. It comes complete with original built-ins and beautifully painted woodwork and walls. The room is entered by a pair of French doors that have had the glass obscured for privacy. It includes a full size (a bit smaller than a queen, ok for two normal sized people) four poster bed, great linens, and really lovely curtains.
It is commonly home to one friendly young black cat, well groomed, who may or may not be present depending on the whims of the guest.
The ambiance of the flat is something else entirely. The space is filled with beautifully painted serene rooms that are home to a well curated collection of French and American furniture from the 1940s to the 1970s. A rotating collection of modern 20th century fine art and pottery keeps the rooms fresh and interesting. One note about the furnishings; folks who are terribly allergic to wool or adverse to cow hides and taxidermy will find the interior stuffed with enough wool kilims, mohair upholstered things, and fuzzy animal hides to perhaps be uncomforatble.
Host A self admitted gay fellow and is a white collar professional with perfect taste, a stellar sense of purpose, and a writing style / sense of humor that can only be described as unique and self assured. If you need cultural information or any product that is home related, he is the guy to turn to. Hosts B, and C are three more happy gay fellows, all in their early to late 20s and white collar professionals.
The basics of the flat include two proper baths, living room with TV and comfy sofa, a real kitchen, a cocktail kitchen, a dining room, and lots of room to spread out in the lower level as needed. Wifi is everywhere.
If needed, guests can have access to professional cooking appliances (8 burner stove, Subzero fridge, Dornbracht fittings) and a dining room that comfortably seats 6 to 8 people around a modern table.
Their are other airbnb rooms that share the space, including one the shares the immediate bath. Let me know if you need to book multiple rooms.
The location is stunning. Literally a two minute walk from the red (main) line train, a 10 to 15 minute stroll to the lakefront parks, so close to Wrigley field you can sometimes hear the roar of the crowd, and so close to the booming nightlife of the 'boystown' gay clubs and the sports bars up and down Clark....all of that is outside of the front door but the street is quiet. Within a minute of walking you can be at a nice coffee shop, and there are well over a hundred places to eat (and three grocery stores!) within a 15 block radius.
Common sense abounds. Tidy up after yourself, don't track in unspeakable things on your shoes, coasters under sweaty glasses on wood surfaces, and attempt to not hula hoop whilst showering. It is an old building, so noise will travel up to the neighbors (email hidden) keep the TV at a normal level, try to not shout into your mobile, and (much as we do think they are adorable) this is not a child appropriate dwelling. You are welcomed to use the kitchen (goodness knows we don't) and even entertain...we just ask that you return everything to it's tidy state when you are done.
This used to be a formal dining room, so it is blessed with fancy moldings ont he walls.
Wow. David was such an amazing host. We had such a great time in his wonderful apartment
David was a perfect host, and the space was better than described. We got into town before the check in time and he was more than willing to accommodate us. He let us shower and leave our luggage in the flat while we started our trip, and by check in he had tidied up and placed our luggage in our room. Can't wait to visit Chicago, David, and the kitties again!
It was my first time in Chicago and staying at David's post modern decorated flat was perfect. The neighborhood was nice and had many great restaurants, bars, and stores within walking distance! Also the train was just a 4 minute walk away and was a quick ride into the city. David and all of his flat mates were incredibly friendly and helpful with all questions/concerns. It was a great pleasure staying at David's place in Lakeview!
Before my arrival, David actually asked if there was anything I needed for my stay. I have been a guest at his home before.....and he has always made me feel truly welcomed. His home is interesting, filled with interesting people and very well located. Great restaurants, and only steps from the Red Line. I have found my fellow travelers that join me to be engaging and convivial, as are the fellow housemates. David's discerning eye and his aesthetics make the home truly beautiful....and I place in which I can feel at home.
David is top notch. I actually only book my time in Chicago based on his availability. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else.
This apartment is wonderful, David's interior design talents are evident and you feel like your staying in a small luxury hotel.
It's a friendly warm atmosphere with all the apartments being left open so people wonder in and out. We never found it noisy or bothersome.
We really had our own space in the sitting room adjacent to the bedroom. The kitchen is well equiped (not that we cooked) and the bathroom clean and shower great pressure.
The location was excellent, a good inner city vibe with lots of places to eat out and easy transport downtown.
Our time in Chicago was too short and I'd come back and stay here again.
David made sure that we were well taken care of before we even walked through the door. Our room wasn't quite ready yet but we were able to set our things in the dining room until he got home from work. We were starving from our travels anyway so that gave us a chance to walk around the corner and grab a bite to eat! The room was spacious and the blackout curtains were a blessing to have in the mornings! A few suggestions for other guests: There are a few different wifi's throughout the building and sometimes the upstairs wifi worked better for us than the 1st floor wifi when we were on the 1st floor. Make sure to connect to both for the best possible connection! Also, with the floors being hardwood and naturally creaky...and with people walking in and out by the bedroom, it might be a good idea to bring ear plugs to use when sleeping if you are a light sleeper. We have an older home so we are somewhat used to it ourselves. David was very nice and helpful. The other roommates throughout the building seemed nice as well. LOTS of different artwork to look at throughout the home as well as some very interesting reading material which we enjoyed during our downtime. The place is also very convenient to liquor stores, restaurants, and there's a Whole Foods around the corner that we frequented. All in all a pleasant experience and we would stay there again.
A fantastic place. The room was exactly as described. Other roommates that lived in the building were very friendly. If you are looking for a place to stay in north chicago, this is the place.

About the Host, David
In a nutshell, I am a fun 30s fellow who lives in Chicago and does high end interior design work.
I have always been interested in showing hospitality to others. Before airbnb this was mostly done by inviting friends and others over to my home for dinner or cocktails....but I find it equally rewarding to be able to host a traveler and know that my home with influence their trip for the better.
As I am getting older I have decided that I really want to travel and see more of the world...but limited finances (coupled with my refusal to sit int he back of planes) as well as a desire to really get to see how people live and just not how tourists are treated makes this a great option for me!
I have quite a few different interests, but I am very into anything design related (architecture, shops, urban life) and am an avid collector of mid century furnishings and love modern art from around 1910 to 1960. I am happy to have one black cat (I like cat's but one is just enough to keep it interesting) and love to entertain friends often. I am also a sucker for British TV, and you will often find BBC America in the background.
I was lucky enough to have the New York Times recently devote two entire pages to me in their home section, making me sound much more interesting in print as compared with in reality and publishing some lovely pictures of my life.
Oh, and my favorite color is that of a wet seal.....greenish gray and shiny!
