The space

Now that the kids are grown my husband and I have a ton of extra room going to waste, and we'd love some company! Centrally located in Connecticut in a safe suburb of Newington, we're proud to share our spacious home surrounded by an acre and a half of well-maintained property. The house is set back four hundred feet from the street with tons of parking, is clean and well-kept, has plenty of space and privacy as well as open gathering places, and is occupied by a very friendly family of three (two during the academic year when my son is at school in Ithaca, NY).

Set alongside a cliff overlooking Piper Brook, spring, summer, and fall days are extremely pleasant amid the gardens and greenery, while in winter a hill for sledding tempts families to go outside. If you're just looking for a place to crash for the night, that's fine too!

There are three available rooms, as well as additional couch space allowing for a maximum of nine guests. The largest of the three rooms has an very comfortable queen size bed, is at the farthest end of the house offering the most privacy, and has a porch overlooking the backyard. The blue room has a queen size bed, and the green room has two twin beds that can also become a king size bed. All three have access to the same full bathroom, and there is a half-bathroom downstairs. See "Beautiful Property, Friendly Home" 2 and 3 for the other available rooms.

Amenities include wi-fi, washer and dryer, 30-foot above-ground pool (June-September), grand piano, hammock, multiple porches, chiminea, air hockey, foosball, and basic exercise equipment. Five minutes from CCSU, fifteen minutes from the University of St. Joseph, twenty minutes from the University of Hartford, and halfway between NYC and Boston.

This listing is for the spacious guest room with the queen size bed.

We would have really liked to leave to positive review after staying for the night in Susan's home. She was responsive, flexible and friendly through the booking/check-in process, and the house is as nice as you would expect from the photos: large, well-maintained and quiet. Unfortunately, as we were about to get ready to leave, her husband, who was the only one hosting us, made some inappropriate and shocking comments about the fact we are a gay couple. He said he wished he would have known we were gay, because it's a family home with many gatherings and kids playing around. And it would have been difficult to explain that two men slept in the same room, in the same bed. He apparently thought I was coming with another guest. I showed him my first message, which started by "My boyfriend and I". We packed our belongings and left as quickly as possible, with a very bitter aftertaste. I have been a Airbnb host myself so several years, and believe this kind of opinion has no place in our community.

Response from Susan:
I am so very sorry for this horrendous behavior and had no idea this took place! Please accept my sincere apology . As you know I was called away to care for my mom and had planned on being there. Sincerely, Susan

Susan is very warm and welcoming. I stayed one night for a business trip and arrived very late due to my flight being delayed. Susan stayed up late to ensure my arrival was perfect! The home is spacious and my room was exactly as I expected and was advertised. I was well rested and fed when I left for my business meeting the next morning! What more can you ask for? ;-)

I stayed with Sue and Paul while attending a training in Downtown New Britain, a short ten minute drive away. From the getgo, Sue and Paul put me at ease with their friendly, relaxed manner, offer of tea and invitation to sit and talk. Sue and Paul are genuinely warm, welcoming people and their home is comfortable, spacious, and full of pleasant touches - tasteful pictures on the wall, a big open kitchen with a view to the backyard, etc. My bedroom was comfortable and private and a few paces from a pleasant shared bathroom. I especially enjoyed waking up to the sound of birds singing outdoors. Sue's house is in a quiet, residential neighborhood but set back from the other homes and surrounded by an expansive lawn, gardens, and woods. If you would like to feel at home while staying south of Hartford, this is a lovely and peaceful place to stay.
