The Gite is a converted Barn in old stone, part of the original complex of farm buildings above the Lac du Castelgaillard on the outskirts of a small village, St Sernin de Duras in the Lot-et-Garonne in South West France. We are in a very quiet rural setting, in prune and wine country.
The Gite has been converted to a high standard and is on two floors. It comprises a large open-plan living-dining-kitchen with the front door opening into the kitchen and terrace doors onto the courtyard. The kitchen is well-appointed. The bathroom comprises shower, wc and vanity unit and is on the ground floor. On the first floor are two bedrooms, a Queen bed in the main bedroom and a Queen and single in the second bedroom. There are oriental rugs in the living room and a wood-burning stove for chilly evenings.
The Gite is set in a beautiful landscaped and flowery garden; it has it's own private courtyard with a Weber kettle bbq, outdoor table and chairs and a separate lawn with recliners and parasol. There is also a shared courtyard with a ping-pong table.
There is a music system, a TV and DVD player; free-sat television [for UK tv channels]. Wireless internet and an iMac computer and printer.
There is a good selection of books, maps, CD's [classical and jazz] and DVD's. There is also a selection of serviceable bikes for guest use.
For guests with babies and young children, we have a cot, high chair, baby bath, buggy etc. and there are child gates at the top and bottom of the staircase.
Towels and linen are provided - the bedinen is cotton, UK style feather-filled pillows and duvets.
The owners have a large potager and a herb garden, and when vegetables and fruit are in season guests are welcome to help themselves.
It is a 10 minute walk through vineyards to the small village of St. Sernin which has a Mairie, tourist information, public tennis courts, a bar-tabac and grocery store and a Pizzeria-restaurant.
The nearest supermarket is 6 kms away in Duras, which is a delightful small town with a chateau and a market every Monday morning.
Ste Foy le Grande on the River Dordogne is a 15 minute drive; a bustling market on Saturday mornings and a large Leclerc supermarket.
Bergerac and St Emilion are a half hour drive; Bordeaux a 70 minute drive [or by train from Ste Foy].
Arcachon and neighbouring beautiful beaches, pine forests and sand dunes along the Atlantic coast is a 2 hour drive from us; there is well organised canoeing on the Dordogne and the Dropt. And for golfers there are several golf clubs, including Le Vigiers, 10 km from us.
We think that the location of the gite, in beautiful unspoilt countryside but close to all amenities and tourist attractions, offers a wide choice of holidaying pursuits - or just staying put and relaxing in the garden.
Spent two fabulous weeks and it was the best of our month long vacation in the Aquitaine region. Lovely, comfortable country home and an area of exploration abounds. We missed the sunflower fields in full bloom, and one was next door to their picturesque property. Carl and Hillary are top notch host and hostess. We appreciate all their efforts to our having a memorable vacation in this picturesque, historical part of France.
Ever thanks, Henry & Julia
It was wonderful! Carl and Hillary are the perfect host! They were really kind. The house is really beautifull and cosy and so quiet! The landscape is great, and We enjoyed so much to eat fruits and vegetables from the garden. Our two little girls were in heaven. Thanks!
