About this listing

Escape from the city to this historic mountain ranch located in Lockwood Valley just 90 minutes from Los Angeles. Unique newly rehabbed horse farm featuring 175+ acres adjoining the Los Padres National Forest.

The space

This unique ranch is located just 90-minutes from Los Angeles but you feel like you are in another world. Situated at 5,200 feet in the beautiful Southern California mountains, no matter what time of year you visit, you will enjoy each of the seasons.

Homesteaded in the 1800's by a gold miner by the name of Lockwood, this original Lockwood Valley property is filled with historical treasures. In the 1920's this property became the summer cabin retreat for the Brown family (from Pasadena, CA). During recent rehab, it was discovered that their cabin still exists within the structure of the main house. Thanks to the Ridge Route Communities Historical Society and Museum, we were able to match up the original Brown cabin exactly to one end of the main house. An easy walk around the property reveals 100 year old relics.

Another recognizable prior owner is Dalton Trumbo, an American screenwriter and novelist, who scripted films including Roman Holiday, Exodus, Spartacus, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. As noted in Wikipedia, Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1947. He was subsequently blacklisted by that industry. He continued working clandestinely, and his uncredited work won two Academy Awards. Trumbo biographies indicate that he spent a considerable amount of time at the ranch penning his award winning scripts.

Guest access

When booking the main house, guests have exclusive use of 3,500 square feet of newly rehabbed living space including 6 bedrooms, 3 baths, fully-remodeled chef's gourmet kitchen, kitchen dining, formal dining, 5 fireplaces, huge living room with TV area, front veranda porch, back patio overlooking lake, outdoor seating and dining. Property also includes lake, horse paddocks, horse barn, small animal barn, acres of walking and riding trails, picnic areas, creeks, riverbeds, outdoor games, vegetable gardens, fruit orchards and more.

Other things to note

At this mountain-top retreat you will experience all the seasons. Evenings are cool year-round so bring plenty of layers. Wintertime weather can be as low as 10 degrees so winter wear is a must during the snowy season. This is a ranch so it is dusty. This valley is known for its wildlife including bobcats, mountain lions, bears, jack rabbits, cottontails and rattlesnakes. Cellphone service is only available in limited areas of the ranch. Room for multiple motor homes or tents for camping at additional charge. House is set up with full kitchen, bath linens and small soap and shampoo packets and bed linens. Bring your suitcase and your personal items. The kitchen pantry is stocked only with the basics so you will need to bring all your food and ingredients.

Memorable getaway from the city! We went a group of 5 families and stayed the weekend. We were greeted By Tiffany and Pete who were very helpful and were willing to show us around the property. The house was clean and newly remodeled. Everything is labeled and easy to find. Pete is available to radio if you have any questions. The farm was the big hit with the kids. They loved feeding the animals early morning and spending time near the barn. Tiffany was very patient with the kids and allowed them to spend time with the animals. It was an overall a great experience!! Thanks Tiffany

Beautiful, peaceful, short drive, safe area, clean and lots of space! The pictures do not do this beautiful ranch justice. Lockwoods Ranch is a gem. Our church leadership team stayed the last few days for our annual leadership retreat. By the way, October is a great month to visit, 70 degree weather! They have a large common area that is perfect for meeting with large groups. There is many places around the ranch to sit and relax. Every bedroom has a charm to it. The house is clean, fully stoked and staff is a call away. There are fireplaces in almost every room making for a beautiful night-time fire. The owner, Tiffany, was very supportive and responsive to us. The staff is amazing! Pete went above and beyond to help us when we were in need. Even the kids loved Pete. Three things we didn't expect was; one, there are beautiful animals. They have horses, goats, lamas, pigs and chickens. Two, there's a shooting range and we were able to do a little shooting. Thirdly, we were able to take a peaceful and fun team hike. Pros: There is more than expected to do, it's clean, the staff is great and there's lots of quite, peaceful space to relax. Cons: absolutely none! If you need to get away and not travel too far this is a gem in Frazier Park!

If you really want to escape the big city and truly relax, then Lockwood's Ranch is the place to go. We had a family of 12 stay here during Labor Day Weekend and it was truly an amazing experience that we will never forget. Pros: 1. Clean 2. So much Space 3. History 4. Farm Animals! 5. All the basic amenities such as BBQ, Woodfire, Kitchen Supplies were provided so you do not have to worry about it. 6. Amazing onsite staff (PETE) who was there to help out anytime you needed. 7. The amazing off road vehicle TOUR provided by (PETE). NO ONE HAD TO ACTUALLY WALK. CONS: NOT ENOUGH TIME TO RELAX! BRING LOTS OF LOTION! This is the place for relaxing, kids to experience the outdoors and away from their electronics, and the best way to catch up with your family without outside distractions. I highly recommend this place!
