Marsaskala or Wied il-Ghajn as known in Maltese, is a small and picturesque fishing village in the south-eastern region of Malta, situated within a deep inlet. The sea front is a lovely place for a stroll, to gaze at the fishing boats which crowd the bay. Tourists and locals alike may enjoy a pleasant walk on the promenade where most of the bars, restaurants and cafes can be found.

Historical sites such as St.Thomas' Tower and quite a number of rural chapels, as well as natural attractions like the rocky shores near Zonqor Point add character to this growing village which has now reached a population of more than 8,000 inhabitants.

Entertainment in Marsaskala

Marsaskala offers a wide array of entertainment particularly during the summer months, when local pubs and restaurants are busy catching-up with thousands of customers every night!

Over the years, there was an increasing activity within the commercial and entertainment industry. It is in fact estimated that more than 100 eateries such as restaurants and take-aways operate from Marsaskala at the moment.

Marsaskala is only 30 min away from the famous fish market named Marsaxlokk.

Marsaxlokk Bay is Malta's second largest natural harbour. It is the best place to see the colourful, traditional Maltese fishing boats, the Luzzus, with the mythical eye painted on their prows. The village is the Islands' main fishing harbour; its Sunday fish market a fascinating insight into local life and a traditional industry. The stalls brim with the night's catch - fish of all shapes, colours and sizes. The village itself has many good fish restaurants. Marsaxlokk derives its name from the Arabic word marsa, meaning harbour, and Maltese for the south-easterly Mediterranean wind, the Xlokk (Sirocco in Italian). Marsaxlokk, with its sheltered habour, was an easy landing place for pirates and the Ottoman Turks. It was here that the Ottoman Turks landed for an attack which ended in the Great Siege of 1565. Napoleon's army landed here in 1798; and in recent times, the harbour was the scene of the Bush-Gorbachev Summit,1989. The headland to the left of the Bay is Delimara Point. It has two attractive, secluded rocky inlets suitable for swimming: Peter's Pool; and the furthermost part of the headland. Fort Delimara, on the west of the peninsula, was built by the British in 1881 to guard the entrance to Marsaxlokk Bay.

  • Tiziana is very friendly and helpful. The location of the flat is very good as it is a very short walk from the coast and close to a bus stop. There is also a lift to the apartment, which functions very well.

The room and bathroom were very clean and the bed was comfortable. The air conditioning is very useful for the hot months. Towels were also provided.

    Good location,

  • Very cozy apartment in a charming town. Great value at a low price. Tiziana is very friendly and helpful host, we had great time traveling with her at our last evening in Malta. The cat is very sweet to ;)

  • Tiziana is such a lovely and caring host. In addition to giving us fantastic tips on places to visit, she was kind and thoughtful enough to provide us with a pair of umbrellas when the weather report predicted rain on our wedding day!! We highly recommend staying with her and the most awesome Cosmo :-)

  • Probably the best value for money on Malta. Great!

    July 2013
  • We stayed at Tiziana's for a week and we felt really at home! Not only did Tiziana give useful instructions before we arrived in Malta, but also she gave us lots of tips and information about local life when we got to Marsascala.

Everything was exactly the same as described and presented, but real! It was cosy, clean and comfortable. We felt as if we were friends coming to visit. And of course Cosmo was a real star! He managed to cast a spell on my husband who usually is not very enthusiastic about animals, but he was talking to Cosmo and stroking him.

Marsascala was also a good choice for us - it is rather quiet little town, but in the evening there are some places where you can go out to eat or drink. The sea is just 5 min away on foot, and the water is fabulous!

However, it is true that although it is not very far from Valetta or the places where you might want to go sightseeing, the busses are not always reliable and some of them don't go too often, and they don't go very fast. So, it is better to set off early and plan your trip. Still we managed to see a lot even though we acted spontaneously and didn't plan much.

Tiziana, thanks a lot! Say hello to Sophia and Cosmo.

  • Tiziana is a lovely host and she makes every attempt to make sure you are comfortable and that you have a great time. She is a mine of information and very friendly
The apartment is very nice, bedroom is large and airy as is the bathroom and caters for all your needs.
    Cosmo is a real character
Close to the bus stop and shops & restaurants
Although Marsaskala is well south of the island it is an absolute delight with the prettiest of waterfronts where everyone meets and eats in the evening- a real taste of Malta!
I certainly would like to stay again on my return to Malta

    Response from Tiziana:

Thanks alot for your lovely comments :) hope to see you soon :))

  • The apartment is cozy, clean and modern.
Tiziana is a amazing person: too kind and helpful, she's the perfect host for starting a vacation or a new experience, like mine, in this awesome island. The bedroom is bright and with a huge wardrobe. Breakfast was better than a hotel, too much probably!
Bathroom was perfect and very spacious. Very close to bus stop and main shops and restaurants in Marsascala, this place is the ideal location for people who want to take a rest or having a different experience compared other main turistic town like Sliema or St Julian.
Last but not least: Cosmo was so cute!
It was impossibile closing the door in front of you: cats are nice and sometimes more intelligent than humans!
    In this period truly often!
    Thanks again, Tiziana.

    Response from Tiziana:

Thanks for your lovely comments Carlo!! Hope to see you shortly :)

  • Tiziana is a lovely host. The apartment is very nice: the room is large, clean, has good wifi and the bathroom has all utilities you need. Tiziana really makes an effort to make you feel at home. Cosmo, the cat, was one of the highlights of my stay. If you are thinking about visiting Malta - Tiziana her apartment will not let you down. I would advise to rent a car, as Marsaskala is quite far to the South and buses tend to take a while to take you to the 'main' touristic attractions. Besides that, this apartment-and your host- are brilliant.

    Response from Tiziana:

Thanks Sam.. Was great having you as one of my guests :) Hope to see you soon.

  • Tiziana was extremely welcoming and accommodating. She made sure we had everything we needed and was happy to give tips for getting around Malta and advice on what to see and when. Her apartment was clean and there was plenty of space for us. Marsaskala was a great base even though it was a bit further from other places in Malta - we bought a week-long bus pass which was definitely worth it! It'(email hidden)ly city that felt a bit more real than some of the other places we visited. We would highly recommend staying with Tiziana, she is a wonderful person!!
