The Space

Enjoy the springtime on the lovely coast. Chilly nights...comfortable days...a bit of fog. Sit by a roaring fire reading, knitting, painting or snoozing! Small space but will give you that much needed getaway from your normal routine! Very comfy bed with full sized mattress. Luscious linens as well. Continental breakfast consists of a delicious homemade coffee cake, muffins or some type of pastry, OJ, and local ground roast coffee or tea. Also a couple tasty snacks. Please let me know if dietary restrictions. IMPORTANT NOTE: AS most of you know, California is experiencing a serious drought. I ask guests to honor our earth by conserving water. SHORT showers please to conserve precious water...we have a well here and would not want to run out! Thank you in advance.

Guest Access

Guests can stroll down my country lane and hike in the beautiful state parks within a short distance away. Very nice neighborhood with very little traffic. You are just a few minutes from VanDamme SP and the quaint historic village of Mendocino. Big River beach is beautiful and you can walk on paved trail for about 7 miles inland along the river. You will see the wildlife galore! Rent a canoe or bikes at "Catch a Canoe" while you are there.

Interaction with Guests

I am home most of the time and am available for anything you may need. More linens, towels, coffee, tea, information on the area, more coffee cake?! (yum) You will have total privacy. I do have one dog and two cats in my home. SO sorry but no pets in the guestroom.

The Neighborhood

Internet works here ..and most cell phones work. Verizon for sure! Cell service is a bit sketchy at times. BUT please know that you can use my phone when necessary. No TV or cooking facilities in the room but Mendocino has great restaurants! 3 min. drive! Host will give you lots of ideas according to your taste. For sightseeing information please see my Profile.

Getting around

No public transit. Everything easily accessible by car (town, State Parks, restaurants, etc).

Other Things to Note

The room is 12ft x 13-1/2ft. Small but everything you need!
If you are celebrating a special occasion and need a little delicious cake...$35 for the homemade cake! you will love it. Give me a few days notice!

  • Sandy was an enthusiastic and warm host, very attentive to our welfare. She made sure we had helpful local information, but didn't crowd us either. The cottage is small but very cute and very quiet, and a 5 minute drive to town. The bed was so comfortable. We had a lovely stay.

    Response from Sandra:

Oh gosh....a beer bottle opener! I didn't think of that. THANKS!! Great to have you both here.

  • Sandy's meadow retreat was perfect for what I needed. I was by myself while my kids where camping 6 miles away. I hate camping so the location was great and the room was a studio that I did not spend much time in other then to sleep and shower.

Sandy is very kind and I would definitely stay here again.

  • From the moment we booked to stay with Sandy, we knew we had made the right choice! She was lovely sending us little messages about how to get to her house and what the weather was like before we arrived
Meeting her was even better as she was just as friendly in person. We couldn't have felt more welcomed and only wished we were there for more than a night. The small touches meant a lot to make us feel relaxed and at home. We hope to return one day to spend more time getting to know Sandy and explore more of the local area around Mendocino.

  • Our experience with Sandy's retreat in the forest was perfect. We enjoyed returning to our comfortable and nicely furnished place next to Sandy's house. Her homemade muffins tasted fantastic and we enjoyed them in the sunshine in a little seating area right outside the door to our room. Coffee was good as well and little amenities like juice in the fridge and a bowl of mixed nuts were really nice touches. The best part was getting to meet Sandy. She was such a nice, kind, fun, and considerate host. She even gave us a present for the baby we are expecting just before we left. We highly recommend this place.

  • We loved Sandy's meadow retreat and Sandy too. When we got there she came over to give us our key and welcome us. A very nice and cheerful lady! The cabin was beautiful and cozy. Many nice touches making you feel at home. The frig was stocked with many goodies including her muffins and the next day she came over with a plate of cookies for us! It was the best vacation we ever had.

  • We loved every minute we spent at Sandy's meadow retreat! The cottage was everything we had hoped and more. Very comfortable and cozy. The fireplace started easily and kept us warm and toasty. Lovely inside.
Sandy was an incredible host. Very warm and kind. The treats she left we delicious!
We really enjoyed visiting with her.
If you have a chance, go into the meadow at night and look at the stars! Incredibly beautiful.
We loved playing with her pooch Patches. Patches had endless energy and loved to play fetch. A great dog. (if dogs are not your thing ~ no worries. Patches only makes appearances upon request).
Town is a short 3 minute drive.
We cannot wait until our next visit to see Sandy and Patch!

Retired Police/Fire Dispatcher, Innkeeper, State Park Aide, Secretary
I have lived in this area for 21 years....I was raised in the Bay Area and worked for the City of San Mateo. After retiring from Police and Fire service (dispatcher) I am now working part-time at local B&B's. I enjoy my art, my home and my furry "kids". One dog and two very spoiled felines. I work part-time at a local Inn and enjoy the Mendocino Art Center & the various classes they offer. I spend hours on the bluffs and on the beach taking photographs. Only moments from the village of Mendocino and the beautiful coastal bluffs. This is also located minutes from the State Parks. Van Damme is about 5 minutes away..they have lovely trails through the Fern Canyon. Big River State Beach is minutes away and you can enjoy running in the sand, rent a canoe nearby or walk the 7-mile trail along the river. Montgomery Woods is a 20 minute drive east of here. Nice trails and very tall trees!. Historic town of Ft.:Bragg is approximately 12 miles north...enroute you can stop at Pt.Cabrillo Lighthouse, Caspar Beach or the Botanical Gardens. Ft. Bragg offers great shops as well as the Skunk Train that travels into the redwoods. Watch the seals bask in the sun north of Ft.Bragg in the State Park. Shop in downtown Mendocino for unique items as well! I am available to answer any questions that you may have. I hope you find this area as magical as I do! Life is to be enjoyed, every moment!
