About This Listing
20 minute train ride to Central Park, 30 minutes to Times Square. Share our family's bright life in the big city while enjoying the charms of a neighborhood where we hang out our laundry to dry in summer and shovel each other's sidewalks in winter.
The Green Room has two windows overlooking our private backyard and city views… if you squint. It also features a brand new Casper memory foam mattress and a full length mirror behind the door.
The room is on the second floor with our family’s bedrooms and has access to a full bathroom on the same floor with newer fixtures.
We provide clean bedding, towels, and as much local wisdom as you like. Guests also get their own hair dryer and umbrellas, so save space in your luggage and borrow ours.
Our single family home is tucked into a quiet tree-lined street just a 4 minute walk from the N/Q train—you can ride it to Bloomingdales, Central Park, Times Square or even Coney Island without transferring.
When not exploring the city or the neighborhood, please rest in our enclosed backyard underneath the grape arbor, or putter between the roses and runner beans. If you time your visit right, there might even be fresh figs or homemade jam to sample.
We are a young family, so we are up with coffee and giggles first thing in the morning, and are quiet after 8 pm for reading, studying, and dreaming.
We would be a great fit for someone who wants a comfortable, quiet place to rest between exciting days filled with exploring the city—or long days working hard.

Your room is your own and I won't enter it once I've shown you where to hang your clothes; the bathroom, kitchen and wireless internet are shared.
The kitchen includes a microwave, toaster, kettle, rice maker, dishwasher, gas range and fridge where you can store leftovers.
The living room is full of books you can borrow. It's also where we store the iron and ironing board, which you may use as long as you bring them back when you're finished with them.
Interaction with Guests
This is our home that we live in while you visit our amazing city. Our kids (and cat) are friendly and curious, but generally we try to let our guests decide how much interacting *they* want to do with *us*.
Astoria is a close-knit community with a little bit of everything and everyone living in each other's pockets. Though we're most famous for our Greek flavors, within a ten minute walk we have authentic sushi, frogs legs and kangaroo burgers in between tiny frappe & spanikopita places.
A sunset stroll along the East River in the summer is a perfect moment, with teenagers playing dance music out of their car stereos, newlyweds getting their pictures taken with the Manhattan skyline as their backdrop, little kids licking ice cream and old men sipping beer and watching the world go by.
We are a 5-10 minute taxi ride from La Guardia, and about 45 minutes by cab from JFK. We live 5 minutes from the Astoria Blvd station on the N & Q lines.
There is no parking; houses on our street were built before cars were common so there is on-street parking but it is hard to get and it's easy to get a ticket if you aren't familiar with NYC's parking rules.
Leave the car at home, ride the trains like a real New Yorker!
Other Things to Note
Please note we have a cat whose fur gets everywhere. If you have allergies, we strongly urge you to find a different place to stay.
The train is incredibly close, which is convenient. It is also above ground, which can get loud in the wee hours of the morning. If you are a light sleeper, we suggest ear plugs-- or, depending on the weather, you can turn on the fan or the radio to ensure an uninterrupted sleep.
I usually "pre-approve" people once we've chatted, but I sometimes get multiple inquiries for the same date. Unless the reservation is confirmed through the Airbnb system it is still available for others to snap up.
Once your booking is confirmed you will get our address and directions how to find us. Follow them, not (website hidden) Maps. (Or email/ text me and I can send you directions tailored just for you and your itinerary.)
Our check in/out times are pretty flexible, but we ask that you be understanding if we can't greet you at 5 am or midnight. We are human. Sleepy humans.
We have another listing, https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1507655 so if you have a larger party we might be able to accommodate them if it's available. If you're not sure, ask!
No smoking inside
No pets (Sorry! But we have a large and territorial cat; we wouldn’t want him eating your Irish wolfhound.)
Please turn the air conditioner off when you leave for the day.
You are welcome to use the washer and dryer in the basement, but we ask that you limit use to off peak times and only do one full load per day. Our electric bill thanks you.
Good rule of thumb with airbnb travel in general: Pretend you're visiting an elderly aunt you don't know very well, and behave accordingly.
And in case it's not obvious, no illegal activity is permitted and any consequences of illegal activity are the guest's and only the guest's responsibility. The guest is also solely responsible for property damage and/or destruction.
(This hasn't actually been a problem for us, but let's keep it that way! ;)
We had a wonderful stay at Alia's family, who really made us feel at home. We also befriended Smudge, their cat, even if we are rather dog-people than cat-people.
The room was exactly as described on airbnb, and the house is located in a nice neighborhood, barely 3 minutes from the subway.
Many thanks for having us, we'll recommend your place to our friends when they'll wish to visit NY (and we hope to be back one day, because there is so much left to see!).
Great location in a very safe area. Great accessibility to buses, trains, the airport and Manhattan. Alia was a great host. Very warm and helpful. Room was clean and definitely met our needs.
The apartment is vary close to subway and hots are vary kind.
SMUDGE. The entire stay was great, but Smudge the cat was definitely our favourite. Otherwise, Alia and her family were very friendly and welcoming, and the location was extremely convenient! Barely a ten minute walk to the N/Q line. Thanks for having us, and for the emergency snacks that one night!

About the Host, Alia
Alia is a homemaker, writer and activist from rural Pennsylvania; Owen was born and raised in Leeds, UK and now works with computers in Manhattan.
Our favorite authors are Terry Pratchett and Lois McMaster Bujold, but we have radically different taste in music and curry burn tolerance. Our diverse life experiences mean we can be sympathetic and welcoming to just about anybody.
We are a young family, so we are up with coffee and giggles first thing in the morning, and are quiet after 8 pm for reading, studying, and dreaming. We would be a great fit for someone who wants a comfortable, quiet place to rest between exciting days filled with exploring the city—or long days working hard.

It's as much a restaurant as a tavern, and while the menu is small most of the food is delicious-- especially the herbed french fries.
They make the pasta on premises, so it is incredibly fresh. A guest from Italy tried their ravioli and pronounced it was just like home.
They cut the avocado when you order your guacamole, and the jukebox is full of Spanish music. Last time we were there, the patrons were singing along.
They have a mini merry go round to keep the 2-5 year old set thrilled, and they let kids use the restrooms in the back even if you don't buy something (though it's the polite thing to do)
They're yummy, their red sangria is delicious and cheap during happy hour, and they have vegan and gluten free dishes clearly marked on their menus.
