The trapdoor downstairs to the kitchen and bathroom and the external steps up to the living room and bedrooms also added to the charm.
Annabel is a very welcoming host, and gave us a personal tour of the National Trust owned barn within the grounds and the history of the main house and additional buildings. She also provided bread, milk and tea on our arrival, as well as two large vases of native flowers from the grounds, plus mint and rocket during our stay.
The Old Smoke House is within a quick stroll to the River Derwent, and is also very close to the Lakes Distillery, whose Bistro was excellent - thanks again to Annabel for the recommendation.
We would definitely consider staying here again, as we had a wonderful week in pretty good weather, visiting the annual Woolfest in Cockermouth and also making several lengthy walks around some very scenic parts of the Lake District. Definitely a week to remember.
After a monstrously trafficky drive up the M6, arriving at Annabel's sanctuary was just wonderful. We were welcomed with warmth and a much appreciated cup of tea enjoyed in the beautiful gardens to recover and soak in the calm.
The Smoke House itself is simply charming - full of quirky cushions and character. We enjoyed a week of sound, restful sleep in the comfortable double bed, woken only by the swallows and house martens in the morning. A bonus was having an area of the garden and garden furniture where we could breakfast in the sun watching the wild rabbits and swallows. The kitchen has all the equipment you need to self cater and Annabel and her family were very helpful with anything else we needed.
The location is super: the river Derwent runs at the bottom of the garden and is perfect for wild swimming. A short 3 mile walk gets you to Bassenthwaite lake (more swimming) and heaps of wonderful walks and water based fun nearby.
Annabel and her family were incredibly friendly and thoughtful throughout our stay. We were greeted with provisions (fresh bread, milk, eggs etc) on arrival which was a lovely gesture, as was the beautiful arrangement of wild flowers left for us on the kitchen table. We were made to feel more like visiting friends than airb&b guests. We couldn't recommend the Old Smoke House more highly! Thank you Lewis's.
Amazing! Rosie and I had a great time in the Old Smoke House. Its a beautiful building with high ceilings and wooden beams (all strung with fairy lights). Annabel was a fantastic host, making the place super cosy, she really made us feel at home (thanks Annabel!). Its in a fantastic location too, I really enjoyed walking along the river and exploring the hills. Can't wait to come back.
