Interaction with guests
Privacy is mutually respected. We are familiar with the Island of Hawaii and are passionate about the lifestyle and culture. Let us know pre-arrival of your special interests. We certainly have our opinions post arrival for destinations and activities; although our active lifestyle (we are not retired) may not allow for daily commentary.
The Puna district is a huge triangle area encompassing territory between Hilo, Volcano, Pahoa and Kalapana. The "Hottest Show in Hawaii" is the Lava Flow 61G. Almost all of the volcanic activity happens in this region. Beginning June 24, 2016, the current lava flow IS accessible to hikers and entered the Pacific waters around July 26, 2016; Pele will determine her timeline and longevity and destination path. View lava by land, air or SEA. The area also contains the largest remaining untouched Ohia forests in the islands, currently being threatened by Rapid Ohia Death as scientist scramble to discover the source and cure. This is a unique area and is relatively undeveloped maintaining it's origin. Agriculture is still a large part of the subsistence economy. We are located close enough to Hilo, Kea'au and for provisions and dining but still a world away from the fast track at the resorts.
-Locals Beach Parks: Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Lokoaka Wilderness, Leleiwi, Kehena Black Sands/Black Sands & green sea turtles, Green Sands, plus.
-Warm Pools: Ahalanui, Kapoho Bay/Champagne Ponds, Pohoiki, plus.
-Snorkel: Kepo'okalani, Kumukahi, Kalapana, plus.
-AND a long list of trails, hikes, botanical gardens, parks, waterfalls and of course, lava. The previous are East Hawaii accessible for one-day adventures returning leisurely to the comforts of Eco Hale.
-Reference books and maps are provided for your use. The current Lava Flow no longer threatens businesses or residents in Lower Puna/Pahoa area. Kilauea Volcano, in Haleamaumau Crater is experiencing levels of red lava lake activity. At around 50-100 ft below the Crater floor, she is spectacular for day and night viewing in Hawaii Volcanos National Park, particularly during a new moon! For the past 32 years since the Eruption began, our neighborhood on the slopes of Kilauea/Pu'u O'o has NOT been in the flow path.
Normally distance/mileage matches drive time in east Hawaii Island due to the smaller population base and distinctly less traveled paths; with the exception of early morning drive time, 6am-8am. Hawaii Island public transportation bus service is limited to the major roadways around the island and as such does not service this neighborhood; 5 miles off Hwy 11.
15-20 miles in any direction from Eco Hale you typically will find much different weather patterns and vegetation growth. Eco Hale is Half Way between Hilo (shopping, provisions & mostly *** star dining at **-**** star pricing) and Hawaii Volcano National Park (stunning, inspiring, $$$$ dining and 4 star quality).
Stargazers info: a 4-wheel drive is required to visit the Observatories atop Mauna Kea summit (43 miles from Hilo/70 miles from Kona) OR researching tour companies for a one evening trip may be most cost effective for you.

Kaeo is an enthusiastic gardener, occasional travel agent, sometimes Hula Girl, Hawaii born, ambassador to the culture, caregiver, former Ad exec and sometimes 'pretty good cook'. She has lived on Oahu, Maui and now the "best"-Island of Hawaii. I've hiked hundreds on miles on ALL the islands, in past days: Mauna Loa, Waimanu, Polipoli, Waihee, Wailau, Hauula, the Koolaus & Wainae Mountains. A kayak trip to Kalalau circumvented the difficult 10.8m hike. Karl is a master tile setter and works on all phases of the Carpentry, Remodel & Building Industry. He built Eco Hale; we estimate using at least 60% re-purposed materials. He also built our home in Mountain View and worked with his family numerous times on the Mainland and Hawaii to build their homes. He is a Huge sports fan (Raiders in particular). Karl comes from a family that simply needs their toothbrush when someone announces "Road Trip"; hence thousands of miles visiting U.S. parks, cities and sights. Our romance began on the island of Maui and our adventure, commitment and curiosity to/for one another continues. We love the entrepreneurial, independent alternative lifestyle and very much enjoy sharing our slice of paradise in the rainforest.
UPDATE - June 27 Lava Flow, NO impending danger to our property. Visit USGS Kilauea for daily updates. The lava flow is in LOWER Puna and has been downgraded to a "Watch", no longer a Warning.
