Imagine your own Private Cottage in lush native Ohi'a trees, hapu'u fern & manicured gardens. Enchanting romance, solitude, "Old Hawaii" style Aloha. NO CLEANING FEES. Uniquely designed for the INTREPID and Adventurous on the Road Less Traveled. Eco Hale enkindles nature lovers, romantics, retreat seekers, adventurers and kind souls. Secure, gated, solar power comfort & peace. East Hawaii, Puna triangle, no 4-W needed. Volcano, lava, nature, hikes, stars, birds & sun. Nightly rates vary.

The space

Hale (pronounced ha-lay) is the Hawaiian word for dwelling/home. Eco Hale is a separate standing cottage; cozy, comfortable studio ensuite layout with separate enclosed indoor bathroom. Accommodates no more than 2 INTREPID travelers or the Solo adventurer. NO additional cleaning fees.

-Your retreat is surrounded by lush manicured native vegetation providing a sense of closeness to our natural ecosystem, seclusion, privacy and magic. Windows are positioned to allow the surrounding rain forest view and morning sun rise/evening glow to light and enhance your stay. A chorus of birdsong announces the day and the soft chant of frogs serenade the night. Hawaiian rains provide the comforting patter upon the roof.

-Designed and furnished as a small footprint with special comforts; sustainable bamboo flooring and custom tile work.

-On demand H2O provides hot showers. Please see the reviews. This is an eco friendly system using far less power than traditional systems where the water tank is constantly heating. Neat, yes? Clean energy, Solar Panels and Battery Storage provide electrical power and allow us to use very little energy generated by fossil fuels.

-Wet-bar kitchenette includes microwave, cooking utensils and dishes, coffee press, ice cooler and a 3.5 cu.ft. mini-fridge.

-Our Complimentary Island style Breakfast features coffee, tea, island fruits, fresh baked banana bread, juices, cereal or make-your-own pancakes with Hawaiian mixes at No Additional Cost. Cupboard spices are complimented with fresh garden herbs as available.

-The Breakfast bar is on the covered deck. You can cook with a gas burner, BBQ or microwave.

-We provide umbrellas, flashlights and binoculars for use on property and for use during night-time Volcano trips; an evening watching Halemaumau glow in VNP is unforgettable. Currently Kilauea's Lava Lake ranges 25-100 feet below the Crater floor occasionally spattering with orange fountains red halos and on a calm night a rumble and gurgle can be heard and felt. Current LAVA FLOW 61G is on the upper lava fields below the pali and is entering the ocean a Kamokuna. Current information and photos can be seen at the United States Geological Surveyors Web site.

-You are welcome to use boogie boards, snorkels, coolers, beach chairs, walking sticks, ponchos, etc. during your stay.

-TWO & THREE Night Requests have special rates from September thru November. Your requested dates MUST be next to an existing reservation. Special rates apply if your dates do not meet these guidelines. To contact us for a specific two or three night inquiry, you will need to set random open dates for our 4 night minimum and identify your requested dates. We will adjust the nights, dates & rates on our side and send you a Special Offer.

We really don't know how any practical or aesthetic improvements can be made for Eco Hale...the attention to detail and comfort that Kaeo and Karl have for their guests is beyond superb. And if you like to be surrounded by a botanical diversity of plants , this is the place for you. A lot of love went into the landscaping. Eco Hale is the perfect place for seclusion as well as close enough to Hilo and many adventures along the south and west Hawaii.

Had an awesome time at the Eco Hale! Kaeo was extremely welcoming (we didn't get the chance to meet Karl). She made sure we had everything we needed and even provided delicious breakfast fruits, coffee, bread, and more. We loved being immersed in the rainforest and definitely would recommend a stay here.

Highly recommend this peaceful and scenic little slice of paradise to anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life! Kaeo and Karl were excellent hosts and gave us the utmost privacy but still managed to be interactive and helpful whenever we needed. Would 100% stay again. Thank you for the memories!

My wife and I stayed at the Eco Hale in August of 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed the location, setting, and price. The description offered on airbnb is accurate. You are located in the Hawaiian rain forest in a beautiful garden filled with tropical plants. You have a great deal of privacy yet Kaeo is always a text/email away and eager to answer any questions you may have. You are a 20 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park and the town of Hilo. Various fruits, a loaf of banana bread, hot cereal, and pancake mix was provided for breakfasts. Yum! Book the Eco Hale, you wont regret it! The property is beautiful and the hosts are great!

First airbnb we've ever done. Nicest lady in the world, she was very helpful and warming. Really happy to have stayed here. (The frogs can be a little loud at night, but your living in the nature, cant control it)

Response from Kaeo & Karl:
LOL Hot summer crescendos around 11pm and wane around 2am as they've satisfied their desires. In the winter their cold blood makes them poor Honeymooners. Smiles & Hugs.

Kaeo is an enthusiastic gardener, occasional travel agent, sometimes Hula Girl, Hawaii born, ambassador to the culture, caregiver, former Ad exec and sometimes 'pretty good cook'. She has lived on Oahu, Maui and now the "best"-Island of Hawaii. I've hiked hundreds on miles on ALL the islands, in past days: Mauna Loa, Waimanu, Polipoli, Waihee, Wailau, Hauula, the Koolaus & Wainae Mountains. A kayak trip to Kalalau circumvented the difficult 10.8m hike. Karl is a master tile setter and works on all phases of the Carpentry, Remodel & Building Industry. He built Eco Hale; we estimate using at least 60% re-purposed materials. He also built our home in Mountain View and worked with his family numerous times on the Mainland and Hawaii to build their homes. He is a Huge sports fan (Raiders in particular). Karl comes from a family that simply needs their toothbrush when someone announces "Road Trip"; hence thousands of miles visiting U.S. parks, cities and sights. Our romance began on the island of Maui and our adventure, commitment and curiosity to/for one another continues.
We love the entrepreneurial, independent alternative lifestyle and very much enjoy sharing our slice of paradise in the rain forest. Our lives have been enriched by the many guests from around the world who enjoy privacy and nature.
LAVA UPDATE - No impending danger to our property or communities.
Visit USGS Kilauea for daily updates.
The hot lava flow is in LOWER Puna and can be seen by hike, helicopter or boat depending on Peles mood and direction.
Hale mau' mau'/Kilauea, the lava lake is in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
