THE BUILDING
The property Klosteret (located at Klosterstræde 17) was built in 1860 by grocer Philip W. Heyman, who before then founded the brewery Tuborg. Klosteret (means ‘The Monestary’ in danish) was originally built as a toy warehouse for the historic business Thorngreen Legetøj at Vimmelskaftet 48, a corner to Klostrstræde.

In 1970, the warehouse with the characteristic crane, which was used to lift goods and heavy boxes of goods through the shutters, was converted into housing. Today, the monastery is privately owned and acts as one of inner Copenhagen's few townhouses worthy of preservation, while the facade and hoist are preserved as they were when the property was built.

THE STREET
Klosterstræde is a street in Indre By in Copenhagen, which runs from Vimmelskaftet (Strøget) as an extension of Hyskenstræde to Skindergade. Along the way, Klosterstræde also meets the short Gråbrødrestræde, which connects the street with Gråbrødertorv.

Klosterstræde has existed since the Middle Ages. The name alludes to a Franciscan monastery that was in the area from 1238. It was the most important Franciscan monastery in Denmark, but it was destroyed during the Reformation. The street itself was badly hit during the Copenhagen fire in 1795.

Most of the buildings in the street date from the 18th century. No. 8, No. 16, No. 21, No. 22, No. 23 and No. 24 are protected.

The building on the corner of Amagertorv was built for Copenhagen's Laane- og Diskontobank in 1906 according to drawings by Axel Berg. The property was taken over by another bank, Håndværkerbanken, in 1924.

Faraos Cigarer, a smaller store chain specializing in comics, fantasy and role-playing games, has a role-playing game store at no. 22 on the corner of Gråbrødrestræde and a comic book store at no. 27 on the corner of Skindergade.

THE NEIGHOURHOOD
Klædebo Kvarter is the sixth in the series of Copenhagen's old mess and includes the area in Indre By (Downtown Copenhagen), bounded by Nørregade, Nørre Voldgade, Tornebuskegade, Sankt Gertruds Stræde, Købmagergade and Skindergade.

Klosterstræde, where Klosteret is located in the middle, is one of the streets in Klædebo Kvarter.

The name Klædebo refers to the cloth merchants' stalls in the Middle Ages and later. The stalls were located approximately on the part of Skindergade that runs from Fiolstræde to Nørregade. In 1659, Klædebo Kvarter was Copenhagen's most densely populated. Klædebo Kvarter was divided into the University's Rode and the Synagogue's Rode.

Outside Indre By is Udenbys Klædebo Kvarter, which was separated in 1813.

THE CITY
The Medieval City is a term for the oldest part of the Inner City in Copenhagen, which originally lay within the ramparts. The district is bounded by Vester Voldgade, Nørre Voldgade, Gothersgade, Kongens Nytorv, Holmens Kanal and thus also includes Slotsholmen.

The area is characterized by its winding streets, many squares and squares and connected rows of houses. The structure of the medieval town has been preserved, although many buildings have been demolished and replaced by new ones as part of an extensive urban renewal. However, there are still many historic buildings, and the area thus helps to tell the story of medieval Copenhagen. Among the significant buildings in the area are the University of Copenhagen, the Church of the Holy Spirit and St. Nicholas Church.

The term is used, among other things, in connection with the debate on traffic improvement in inner Copenhagen, where at the Car Free Days in 2003 and 2004, the car-free area was demarcated to the Medieval City.
