The Space

Airbnb at it's best! Experience the uniqueness and natural environment of Big Sur while surrounded by artwork at the Point Lobos Garden Temple Crashpad at Gravity Garden in the Carmel Highlands. The Crashpad, built with love by the artist, is a simple and comfortable place to sleep while visiting the coast of Big Sur and Carmel. This is a private, small, cabin available several times a month, ideal for one, cozy for two, located in the garden of a working artist's studio gallery where you will find me creating new sculpture.

Location, location, location. You won't find a better location in the Big Sur / Carmel area. Plus enjoy the changing flowers and art presented at Gravity Garden. Book now as this is a special opportunity to experience a unique California lifestyle. Set in a 1 acre sculpture garden in a small coastal community located on the Big Sur coastline adjacent to Point Lobos State Reserve.

The Garden Temple Crashpad is a perfect overnight stop for California coast travelers and your best option if you have little time yet want to experience the beauty of Big Sur and Carmel. If you are traveling north from LA enjoy Big Sur then crash in the Garden Temple. In the morning continue to San Francisco by starting with breakfast in Carmel-by-the-Sea (3 miles) or to the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium (6 miles). Are you headed South from San Francisco? Just reverse the plan, more or less, before continuing to LA. Or better yet ask me for specific things to see or do before or after your stay here.

Experience the incredible sunsets at Point Lobos Reserve! Arrive at the 6:30pm check-in and I will walk you across a private path directly to Point Lobos where you can visit incredible beaches and forest trails. The park closes at sunset and you must arrive on-time for the walk.

I do work in Gravity Garden or the studio during days or evenings so multiple day visits are best for guests who are planning full days of hiking or other activities, including visiting Point Lobos State Reserve.

The Garden Temple Crashpad is less than a mile from the main entrance to Point Lobos State Reserve and is a light and airy space set in the garden of an artist's studio gallery. The paths are natural and flower-filled. It is warm, small and sweet, no frills, a firm futon bed with drawers, a chair and a nightstand with reading light. You do get a delicious garden view, off-street parking, our camp kitchen (small fridge, gas burner and grill, sink, dishes, pots and utensils) and high speed WiFi. Wine glasses and a corkscrew as well if you like!

This room is small, gorgeous, located in a rustic environment and simply appointed. A combination of glass windows and doors create the feeling of sleeping in the garden while the floor to ceiling curtains provide privacy if desired. The toilet is located in the gallery 20 steps away. There is a bathtub but no shower. Clean linens and towels are provided.

If you want to relax then you may eat at any of the fine restaurants located nearby. From your room walk to Point Lobos State Reserve, to the four star Highlands Inn for a meal and drinks, or to the Carmel Highlands General Store for espresso, pastries, soft drinks, wine, many food items and 24 hour gas. It is 2.5 miles to a 24 hour Safeway full-service grocery store.

The Garden Temple Crashpad is located in the Carmel Highlands, 3.5 miles south of Carmel-By-The-Sea and 18 miles north of the Big Sur Post Office.

Did I mention the most pristine beaches in Central California are within 4 miles of the Point Lobos Garden Temple? And spectacular walking or hiking trails as well!

The Garden Temple Crashpad is located on a #22 Monterey Peninsula Transit Bus stop, Highway One at Fern Canyon Road. The bus has a bicycle carrier. Three times each direction daily.

No pets are allowed and no smoking in the buildings.

I work at Gravity Garden each day but I schedule time at the end of each day to spend with you so please plan on arriving at 6:30pm. If you plan on arriving earlier in the day I can offer some special suggestions for things to do before check-in!

You may request a LATE ARRIVAL but not until a week before your arrival. Late arrivals will be possible in most cases but will not be considered before then.

You must arrive on-time to receive the key to the bathroom unless you have confirmed another time with me. Please confirm your arrival time a day or two before your booking. Should there be a problem I will accommodate your needs whenever possible. Please, no early arrivals.

Beaches: There are many beaches nearby and several in Point Lobos State Reserve. Point Lobos is incredibly beautiful and I highly recommend that you explore it before or after your night at the Garden Temple Crashed. The main car entrance is a one mile drive. Questions? Ask me.

Best of all, if you desire, consider me your personal guide to the wonders and history of the Central Coast of California. What kind of experience might surprise and please beyond your expectations?

  • The Garden Temple Crashpad is exactly as it appears in the listing. Gorgeous surroundings with a simple, comfortable crash pad. Right across the highway from Point Lobos and next to a country store that makes a great cappuccino. I spent a whole afternoon just wandering around Jim's garden taking pictures and breathing fresh air.

  • Jim is great, very attentive and friendly. The private crashpad is very unique, comfortable, clean, private, and peaceful. I would recommend it to all of my friends. When the water pump had a leak, Jim immediately got on the case to fix it. The kitchen can be a bit more organized but overall the experience is great. Beautiful garden and had the standard of an eco resort.

  • We had a great time at this place. Jim and his wife are incredibly friendly and down to earth and made sure to be warm and accommodating hosts. FYI there is no shower (but a totally working bathtub) and you are in a full bed (works for 1 or 2 people). 5 minute walk from the beach and 5 minute drive from Carmel downtown!

  • Very unique little place! One of the gems of air bnb. Not for everyone though. The listing description is super accurate so i would recommend taking your time to read it properly.

  • Jim was very welcoming and the Crashpad is cozy. We arrived on a Saturday evening and Jim walked us down to Gibson beach for sunset. As others mentioned the bathroom is a walk outside and the shower doesn't work so you have to take a bath. This was totally fine for us, but I know not for everyone:) I would highly recommend this location. It is rustic like camping, but with half the planning.

  • Amazing 1 room cabin. Beautiful surroundings, clean, gorgeous, very helpful friendly host. He walked me down the path to show me a quiet beach, and offered restaurant recommendations as well as suggestions of trails to hike. Would love to stay here again!!

FYI- bathroom is in a separate building, no shower, bathtub only.

  • Jim was super nice and took my friend and I down to the beach..which is walking distance. It was SOOO amazing!!!!!! Theres a trampoline overlooking the ocean too..my friend and I jumped on often by the crashpad!!! Definitely go do that! My best friend and I took a road trip and found this awesome place of Jims!! Its super cute and so beautiful!!!! The stone work and art was just amazing!! Location was great, everything was really clean. I rarely take baths so this was so nice to actually take a nice relaxing bath. I definitely will go spend time there again. This was an amazing deal for being so close to the ocean. Cannot wait to go again!!!!! I had an amazing experience.

  • Hey Everyone!

I recently stayed one night at Jim's Crashpad and it was amazing!! My roommate and I had a bit of a dilema and were unable to make it to Jim's place until 10:30 PM but Jim and his wife were nice enough to wait up for us and show us around. Jim's studio is unbelievable, along with his work and the overall place was so quiet and cozy. The outdoor kitchen area was so lovely and had everything we needed :) If you are going to be in the Carmel area, I would highly recommend staying here. Jim also provided us with great tips about the area which was great!

    Thanks again Jim,

    Mandi & Lucie :)
