Or a Crashpad ! Are you looking for somewhere to sleep before hitting the road again while touring the glorious coast of California? The Garden Temple Crashpad is a perfect overnight stop for California coast travelers and your best option if you have little time yet want to experience the beauty of Big Sur and Carmel. If you are traveling north from LA enjoy the winter sunset in Big Sur then crash in the Garden Temple. In the morning continue to San Francisco by starting with breakfast in Carmel-by-the-Sea, only 3 miles from the Garden Temple Crashpad, or to the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium only a 6 mile drive. Are you headed South from San Francisco? Just reverse the plan, more or less, before continuing to LA. Are you attending an event in this area then this is a perfect place to crash before driving home well rested in the morning.
The Garden Temple Crashpad is less than a mile from the main entrance to Point Lobos State Reserve and is a light and airy space set in the garden of an artist's studio gallery. The paths are natural and flower-filled. It is warm, small and sweet, no frills, a firm futon bed with drawers, a chair and a nightstand with reading light. You do get a delicious garden view, off-street parking, our camp kitchen (small fridge, gas burner and grill, sink, dishes, pots and utensils) and high speed WiFi. Wine glasses and a corkscrew as well if you like!
This room is small, gorgeous, located in a rustic environment and simply appointed. A combination of glass windows and doors create the feeling of sleeping in the garden while the floor to ceiling curtains provide privacy when desired. The toilet is located in the gallery 20 steps away. There is a bathtub but no shower. Clean linens and towels are provided.
If you want to relax then you may eat at any of the fine restaurants located nearby. From your room walk to Point Lobos State Reserve, to the four star Highlands Inn for a meal and drinks, or to the Carmel Highlands General Store for espresso, pastries, soft drinks, wine, many food items and 24 hour gas. It is 2 miles to a 24 hour Safeway full-service grocery store.
The Garden Temple Crashpad is located in the Carmel Highlands, 3.5 miles south of Carmel-By-The-Sea or for those coming from the south it is 18 miles north of the Big Sur Post Office.
Did I mention the most pristine beaches in Central California are within 4 miles of the Point Lobos Garden Temple? And spectacular walking or hiking trails as well!
The Garden Temple Crashpad is located on a #22 Monterey Peninsula Transit Bus stop, Highway One at Fern Canyon Road. The bus has a bicycle carrier. Three times each direction daily.
No pets are allowed in the Point Lobos Garden Temple and no smoking in the buildings.
I work at Gravity Garden each day but I schedule time at the end of each day to spend with you before I go home. Please plan on arriving at 6pm. If you plan on arriving in Carmel earlier in the day and would like some special suggestions for things to do before check-in then just ask!
You must arrive on-time to receive the key to the gallery (and the bathroom) unless you have made other arrangements with me. Please confirm your arrival time a day or two before your booking. I will accommodate your needs whenever possible if you contact me. Please, no early arrivals.
I do appreciate the reviews that Guests have posted, and I look forward to reading more so please post them. I have enjoyed meeting each of my guests and look forward to meeting you soon.
Beaches: There are many beaches nearby and several within hiking distance including Gibson Beach in Point Lobos State Reserve. The guided evening walk to the beach mentioned in some reviews is no longer possible because the days are shorter and the park closes at sunset. Point Lobos State Reserve is incredibly beautiful and I highly recommend that you explore it before or after your night at the Garden Temple Crashed. The main car entrance is a one mile drive but guests may visit China Cove, Gibson Beach and Bird Rock plus Whalers cove from the Crashpad by walking less than a half-mile North to the walkers entry at the park. Questions? Ask me.
Best of all, I remain your personal guide to the wonders and history of the Central Coast of California. What kind of experience might surprise and please beyond your expectations?
If you wish I provide local information regarding activities and restaurants, otherwise you have the privacy of your own space.
The crash pad was perfect - just what we needed. Jim was a marvelous host, we had a wonderful time.
Only thing was I'd searched for something in Big Sur, and this is technically in Carmel - about 20-30 min away. Probably my fault for not knowing the difference, but make sure that's what you want! Also, know the bathroom is more for quick rinse than luxurious preening. It's a tub, not a shower, and the mirror is small. All in all, however, its exactly what we needed - a beautiful (i mean BEAUTIFUL) location to snuggle in for the night.
The property and guest house are as great as they are in the photos- Truly an amazing atmosphere. The bed was very uncomfortable though, but overall it was an enjoyable stay.
We had a great time at Jim's place! The room is beautiful, everything's as in the pictures. We had room to cook and have breakfast. The garden is AMAZING, and exceptional to wake up in there, very private.
Carmel and Big Sur area are a must to do if you are visiting West Coast and enjoy nature.
Jim is a really cool guy, a true artist!
Thanks for everything Jim!
This was the perfect place for me to stay on my solo vacation. It was comfortable, private, and exactly what I needed to get away from the big city. Jim and his wife Sonia were absolute dolls. I would love to stay here again the next time I need to get away from the hectic city life.
We had the best time at Jim's even though it was only for one night.
I would highly recommend anyone coming through town to stop here for a spot that though unconventional, is unique and cozy. Jim and his wife will make you feel welcome yet give you your space to enjoy their property. We made dinner on the stove outside and hung out under the stars. The location is convenient to the Big Sur, as well obviously Point Lobos--Jim will have great suggestions on where to hike/eat/anything you need help with in terms of entertainment. We had an excellent time and if we end up here again will definitely not hesitate to stay here again.
Wow, what a great find! This was the perfect get-away and re-charge that I'd been looking for. Got to pretend that I lived in Carmel for a few days. The outdoor kitchen was a lot of fun to use. Jim was a great host, and pointed out a hike in Big Sur that I would have missed on my own, and he showed me a great beach spot. You can't go wrong staying here.
We had a lovely stay in the crashpad! It is super close to Point Lobos State Park and the surrounding gardens are gorgeous. The outdoor cooking/patio area are within twenty feet of where you sleep and the bathroom is just another few feet away.
simple and spectacular. one of the gems on air bnb. a real dose of big sur funk and fun. not for everyone. the kitchen is outside. the bathroom is in a separate building and the shower is a dog bowl you fill with hot water and pour over yourself in a bathtub. but it all works and it's charming, honest and natural and also happens to be in one of the most beautiful places on earth. i found it awesome. would stay there again.
I didn't get to meet Jim but I really enjoyed meeting Megan, the woman who was taking care of the house at the time. The location is very easy to find, the tiny cottage is cute and it was a nice, quiet evening for me. The only thing you might want to consider if you aren't driving is that a taxi to the Monterey airport costs $36.
The place is great, the location is unique, and Jim is a wonderful host!
