The Space

Hello. This is a private guest suite in the lower level of my Craftsman-style house in the sunny, popular Rockridge neighborhood.

Rockridge is on the Oakland/Berkeley border. My house is two blocks from College Ave., which has dozens of restaurants and cafes, two bookstores, hair salons, gift shops, Trader Joe's market, a yoga studio and great transportation (BART station two blocks away).

Cozy bedroom with queen-size bed, four goose-down pillows and high-quality linen. Small bathroom with shower (no tub). Large living room/kitchen combination.

Private entrance. Peaceful, fully landscaped back yard with patio table, umbrella and chairs. Great for eating outdoors.

Wi-Fi. Washer/dryer.
Your own parking space in my driveway.

The kitchen is equipped with refrigerator, microwave, gas stove, toaster, tea kettle and coffee maker. You'll have complimentary orange juice, bagels, cream cheese and butter, oatmeal, a pitcher of cold filtered water. Tea and coffee.

You're a 5-minute walk from Market Hall, a great food emporium with a bakery, coffee house, gourmet deli, wine shop, produce market, florist, fish market and meat market.

You're two blocks from a BART train that takes you to San Francisco in 20 minutes or downtown/uptown Oakland in 8 minutes; and a bus that takes you directly to the U.C. Berkeley campus in 10 minutes. Easy freeway access to San Francisco, Marin County, Napa Valley, Silicon Valley.

I also provide lists of suggested restaurants and sights, guide books on San Francisco Bay Area for you to borrow. I've lived in the Bay Area 40 years and I know the area very well.

Full disclosure:
-- The ceilings in the guest suite are low, 6 and a half feet.
-- There may be a small amount of noise coming from upstairs where I live.
-- Living room sofa is 4.5 feet long, not big enough for sleeping.
-- No television.
-- I have a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever who will be in the back yard occasionally. Friendliest and prettiest dog on earth.

Interaction with Guests

It varies, and depends on the guest. My first priority is to give all my guests as much privacy and quiet as they need.

Getting around

Excellent transportation. BART station is two blocks away. Quick, easy freeway access to San Francisco and other Northern California locales.

  • Edward was extremely helpful and we loved our location. Near to everything we needed and the pictures of the living arrangements are totally accurate. The patio was a beautiful outdoor experience and we felt we were in our own oasis of sun and comfort. Thank you Edward for a great stay!!

  • Rockridge Gem is a well appointed apartment with a peaceful garden and friendly Lab, Lucy. Edward was an attentive host without being intrusive. The unit is nice and peaceful without TV or radio. It is close to all of the shops on College Street
    and the BART Rockridge station.

  • It's difficult to leave an original thought about Edward's place because all of the glowing reviews are true, the beautiful garden; the quiet, sunny location; the short peaceful walk through the gardened neighborhood to an upscale but still full of character restaurant /shopping area; the clean, quiet, comfortable, efficient apartment. I had read about these things, but was still surprised when we got there. The apartment is more cozy than it appears in photos, for sure, but the intangible element is the host. My husband and I only met him briefly, but it's evident he has been on many journeys, and the result is a quality that quietly comes through everything. He is good at communicating when need be and we appreciated the generous use of the garden. It briefly felt like our place.
To Do: I would advise getting a reservation at Marica restaurant on College, yummm! Or visit Rockridge Market Hall at Schafter and College especially for pastry/coffee, fresh produce, or just to wander about, what a find!! Or if you long for a real book store go to Diesel on College. Rockridge BART will take you just about anywhere else...S.F. and many places in Berkeley.

  • Rockridge Gem was a perfect setting for our stay in Oakland. Edward was a marvelous host. His lovely patio and clean, comfortable home were exactly what we needed. He provided loads of information about surrounding activities and places to eat. Having off street parking was a plus. I highly recommend Edward's Rockridge Gem.

  • Once again Bill and I enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing stay at Edward's Rockridge Gem! We feel spoiled because it is a great space and the best place for us to stay in Oakland. We can get around easily and the neighborhood is so walkable. We have long since felt like visitors but rather part of the neighborhood when we return!! And Lucy! What a cool dog! Amy and Bill

  • Edward was the perfect host and the accomodation was ideal for our needs.
Edward gave us comprehensive instructions before our arrival on how to find the apartment.
The apartment manual was very detailed and also included great suggestions for things to do and places to eat.
The apartment itself is in a nice quiet street. It was very well (and newly) equiped and there were many nice touches. These included the well stocked breakfast options in the fridge, the good selection of guide books and maps, the comprehensive house manual and the great selection of reading material. We met Lucy the dog once or twice and she too was very welcoming.
The apartment was accurately portrayed in the advertisement and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it. We hope to stay again.

  • I had a wonderful stay at Edward's Rockridge Gem! The guest suite is comfortable and well-appointed. I had everything I needed for my 5 night stay- full kitchen, comfortable bed, beautiful location, and friendly, helpful host. The location is ideal - a real neighborhood setting while less than two blocks to upscale shopping, gourmet restaurants and markets, and the Rockridge BART station. I walked or took BART everywhere - didn't need to rent a car - amazing!

  • Edward's place was great and perfect for our stay. He was also so friendly and accommodating. The place is only a short train ride into the city. We really appreciated all the guide books and information in the apartment and found more than enough to do. Thanks Edward!
