History

Established in 1926

Built in 1894 as the private mansion for riverboat captain, John Gilbert, today's "Mansion" remains the jewel of Golconda's historic "silk-stocking row." In the mid-1920's, the Mansion was converted to the local hotel it is today. Boasting some of the finest craftsmanship available a century ago, the Mansion's millwork still awes visitors today. The six fabulous fireplace mantels are centerpieces of an architectural excellence seen only in the palaces of Europe. An exotic gingerbread arch hangs overhead at the entrance which lore says was removed from Gilbert's riverboat. Just beyond the elegantly carved, beveled door is the main staircase designed by the architect who created a similar grand staircase at the White House. However your eyes will be drawn upward to the unique 6 foot tall stain glass window at the landing. You will be amazed at every turn!

Very unique botique hotel/B&B. Comfy beds, friendly and helpful hosts. Private bath for each room. Interesting and historic decor. On the weekends there is a lounge with a wide selection of wines, local wines, and local craft beers as well as a variety of food. The locatoin is very good for doing things like hiking trails in Shawnee National Forrest, antiquing, wine tasting, visiting breweries, etc. Really enjoyed the area.

Ah thanks Brian. Appreciate hearing positive feedback about the kiddos (and the business lol). We'll take your other suggestions to mind, too. Glad you enjoyed yourselves and if you are back in the neighborhood, we'd love to host you again. Cheers!

This is such a unique place. Our room was nicely decorated. We had a delicious breakfast casserole along with yogurt and fruit. We spent several hours in the lounge. We felt right at home.

If you want a place to rest and relax in style between adventures, this would be a good one. It's set up for single people or couples. It's a bed and breakfast with a wine list. I recommend the local national parks also. I would be curious to see how the town comes to life at next weekend festival.

Response from Anthony:
Thanks again Nicholas for the kind words. Yes indeed, cell reception here in the middle of nowhere can be tricky; we offer our land line for future reference. Hope you can come back to see us again. Cheers!

Wonderful experience! My wife and I stayed at the Riverview for a long weekend. The mansion is quirky and laid back, and Tony and Beth are warm and welcoming hosts. Our accommodations were extremely comfortable, and provided the perfect getaway. The Levee Lounge is a great place to relax and unwind--with a beer and wine selection that's beyond anything I've seen anywhere else. The mansion was conveniently located for us to explore Garden of the Gods and Rim Rock. We also drove into Paducah to explore their arts district and hit their Farmers Market. Overall, we just really loved the warm and laid-back "vibe" of the mansion and its hosts. As a same-sex couple visiting Southern Illinois, we felt very comfortable We'll definitely look forward to our next visit!

Anthony and his wife welcomed us immediately upon our arrival. I was impressed because we arrived so late (between 12 and 1 am) and they had their kids to take to school the next morning. The neighborhood itself is small and quaint. An ideal, scenic and peaceful getaway in a classic Huck Finn-esque river town. The rooms were cozy and comfortable. We fell asleep the instant our heads hit the pillow. The mansion is also filled with many neat trinkets which the owners are willing to sell for great, often below market, prices.

The Riverview Mansion Hotel was unique, quaint, and funky (in a good way). It was a short drive the Garden of the Gods, which was our draw. The room was well equipped with Internet/Netflix and the bed was extremely comfortable. There is a lounge next door with a large selection of beer and wine, and they have an outside deck for live music and entertainment. We were on the first floor room, so we didn't have as much privacy as you might want with the music and people chatting outside our door and windows. While we appreciated the history and uniqueness of the mansion, we probably would not pay the same amount to return.

The Riverview Mansion Hotel of Golconda is a full service hotel, open year round. In addition to the finest Victorian style accommodations available in Southern Illinois, there is also a lounge serving the best selection of local wines, as well as a restaurant. The hotel is open year round with advance reservations encouraged. All major credit cards accepted. The Levee Lounge serves hotel guests, and is also open to the public on festival weekends and for special events. The restaurant shares the same availability as the lounge, and will be serving a special selection of pizzas as well as a unique tapas menu.
The enchanted hotel setting with its expansive grounds and facilities is the perfect venue in which to enjoy the huge variety of hand-crafted, award winning wines from not only Illinois, but also the best from Indiana, Missouri and Kentucky micro-vineyards. Harvest season will be a unique time at the mansion with Oktoberfest festivals. This will be the opportunity to share the seasons best wines complimented with tantalizing artisan meats and cheeses. Festival weekends will provide just the incentive to bring in the best in local and regional musical talent. Indoor and outdoor entertainment! Our wine shop exhibits a wide array of gifts and specialty items. In addition, it is our pleasure to feature the area’s best jams, salsas, dips, etc…

The Mansion boasts an eclectic variety of overnight lodging. Most rooms feature televisions with built in DVD, refrigerators, microwaves and coffee makers and room safes. Wireless (secure) internet is available throughout the house. Host your next meeting or event at the Mansion; lovely common rooms and equipped function facilities available. Plush surroundings, exotic décor, and luxurious accommodations await you in Golconda!

The hotel rooms are both spacious and intimate. Buy a bottle from the bar and bring it up to your room! The Mansion caters to high end customers preferring the historic ambiance while not skimping on amenities. Other rooms with shared facilities are available for groups or hunters and fishermen needed a base to explore the area.
