The Space

At Casa Dos Rios the rainforest meets the sea and you can experience tropical nature in abundance. The 4 bedroom home is perfect for family or friend gatherings. Even so, it has been visited and enjoyed by honey-mooners, groups of 4 or less, and even a single person.
The photos tell much of what it has to offer, but if you like sleeping to the sound of waves, waking to the jungle sounds of birds and howler monkeys, plus living in view of the waters of Gulf Dulce, then it is right for you.
The home was built from local hardwood lumber by its owner, and so much of the design takes the environment and air flow into consideration. The cupela directs air up and out, the breezeway downstairs forms a breeze tunnel, while the trees hugging the house give it a tree house feel.
All four kinds of monkeys are abundant in this area of Costa Rica, and are often seen in the yard and trees, from inside the house.
The beds are queen sized and have very good no-see-um netting, plus fans and lights within the bed.
The baths and kitchen have hot and cold water. There are two bedrooms downstairs and two up.
The owners live on site and are available to help with arranging tours, taxis, car rental, reservations at area restaurants, etc. They have been hosting guests here for over 8 years. Pricing includes cleaning and taxes, so the quote of a rate is a firm one. Gratuities to the cleaning staff are encouraged. The house is cleaned after 3 nights, and towels and linens are provided.
On the grounds there is croquet, horse shoe pits, a yoga deck and a beach right out front. Just to the right along the beach is the mouth of the Carbonera River with such cool clear fresh water! A great place to take small children to play.
The area is rain forest, but the road a block away is a good place for viewing many kinds of birds, and the birding tours actually come there. The bar-restaurant down the lane is a good place to enjoy lunches and dinners most days. (they close for Sept., Oct. and Nov. each year).
There is public transit to and from town twice a day. The nearest town is Pto. Jimenez 11 miles away by dirt road. The owner-managers can call taxis for you, or arrange car rental.

  • Wonderful fully appointed studio appartment! Melanie and Kim were VERY accommodating and friendly. They checked us in and we had the place to ourselves. Very quiet and comfortable place to stay. The only thing missing was a thermostat in the apartment. It was warmer than I like, but I did bring a fan!! Full size fridge with microwave and nice tv with cable. Internet and wifi very fast and good signal.

    Response from Melanie:

Thank you Frank and Linda for taking the time to review our guest flat. We appreciate your stay here. We know that your time was short here and hope that you will be able to use the flat again, with more time to enjoy the outdoor grill and patio area next time.
After Oct. 30th, we will be going back to Costa Rica, so our sister, Liz Cantwell will be the hostess. We really appreciate the good review.

  • Our anniversary get-away weekend in Fayetteville, AR with Melanie (actually hosted by her lovely and savvy sister Liz) surprised us both. Fayetteville charms with great outdoor activities, beautiful parks, and a smashing Saturday morning, heart-of-downtown Farmer's Market. Devil's Den state park is a must for hikers and lovers of the natural world. Our accommodations were excellent, perfect really, quiet, quaint and all details attended. We would certainly return to both town and lodging -- hopefully soon!

    Response from Melanie:

Thanks Brian and Corrine for you great review. Now you see why we will never leave NW Arkansas and especially Fayetteville for long. We too love our community there. I'm glad you were able to experience our farmer's market, and especially on a Saturday. Please come back to our flat as we improve the walkway from the street, the parking and provide a BBQ place. We will be there for these projects this coming Fall.

We, the owners, are Kim and Melanie Norman, who sometimes live in Fayetteville, in this apartment, and most of the time live in Costa Rica in the Osa Peninsula. We love living in the rainforest and we offer a guest house called Casa Dos Rios in Costa Rica. Our residency in Fayetteville goes all the way back to 1974 when I, Melanie, moved from my home state of Louisiana with my sister, Liz. It is her number you will reach when you call for more information. She has been a Coldwell Banker agent, and before that, an agent in my real estate company in Fayetteville, for more than eight years. I used to own and run Seven Hills Realty in Fayetteville (I was a broker for 30 years). Kim, a builder, is now retired from building, but occasionally does some small projects for Fayetteville friends in the Fall when we usually visit Fayetteville. I love gardening, cooking, water color art, yoga and dance. We enjoy living in the tropics, but will always return to our precious community and friends in NW Arkansas. It is truly a special place! We call it our North American rainforest. P.S.: most of the art on the walls of the apartment were done by Liz or I. We hope you like it.
