About this listing
At the beach, Cabo Matapalo area, Casa Dos Rios is spacious, with all wood surfaces, and landscaped. Wildlife galore, plus sounds of surf, macaws and howler monkeys (only 150 feet from the beach & near waterfalls and local restaurant). BOOK-IT!
The pyramid roof design with a cupola directs air up and out, and channels breeze nicely. This is the island in the kitchen.
At Casa Dos Rios the rainforest meets the sea and you can experience tropical nature in abundance. The 4 bedroom on the beachfront is perfect for family or friend gatherings. Even so, it has been visited and enjoyed by honey-mooners, groups of 4 or less, and even a single person.
The photos tell much of what it has to offer, but if you like sleeping to the sound of waves, waking to the jungle sounds of birds and howler monkeys, plus living in view of the waters of Gulf Dulce you will choose Casa Dos Rios... and if you like living up high, on the level of the trees and the monkeys passing by, then it's second-level living space is also right for you. The location is special for its jungle locale, it's proximity to the really cool and eclectic bar-restaurant (a community gathering place just down the beach path) and it's neighbourhood of wonderful people!
The home was built from local hardwood lumber by its owner, and so much of the design takes the environment and air flow into consideration. The cupela directs air up and out, the breezeway downstairs forms a breeze tunnel, while the trees hugging the house cool it and give it a tree- house feel.
All four kinds of monkeys are abundant in this area of Costa Rica, and are often seen in the yard and trees, from inside the house.
The beds are queen sized and have very good no-see-um netting, plus fans and lights within the bed.
The baths and kitchen have hot and cold water. There are two bedrooms downstairs and two up.
The owners live on site and are available to help with arranging tours, taxis, car rental, reservations at area restaurants, etc. They have been hosting guests here for over 10 years. Gluten-free meals are available here, as the owner bakes great gluten-free breads, pies and desserts.
Pricing includes cleaning and taxes, so the quote of a rate does not have hidden charges. Gratuities to the cleaning staff are encouraged.
On the grounds there is croquet, horse shoe pits, a yoga deck and a beach right out front. Just to the right along the beach is the mouth of the Carbonera River with such cool clear fresh water! It is a great place to take small children to play, or for a cooling pool.
The area is rain forest, but the road a block away is a good place for viewing many kinds of birds, and the birding tours actually come there. The bar-restaurant down the lane is a good place to enjoy lunches and dinners most days. (they close for Sept., Oct. and Nov. each year).
There is public transit to and from town twice a day. The nearest town is Pto. Jimenez 11 miles away by dirt road. The owner-managers can call taxis for you, or arrange car rental.
Our property is located before the Carbonera treacherous river crossing, giving you the amenities of Cabo Matapalo, but with less wear and tear on vehicles!
We have wifi, phone reception, a path to the bar, 5 minutes away, and we are on site owners who can provide added services. Owner, Melanie is experienced with cooking with meats, gluten-free and vegetarian. We have a yoga deck, croquet, horse-shoe pits, sea kayak and boogie boards for our guests to use. (Wifi in this area is basic, and not strong enough for streaming).
Interaction with Guests
We are around when needed, or to help with arrangements, but we are in our own house, and the landscaping is planted to privatize both houses. They are about 150 ft. apart. We know that most of our guests want privacy and we respect that. We have a separate path to the beach. We do stand by to help with any arrangements our guests might want, be it car rental, reservations at a resort nearby for dining, or just arranging a massage therapist who will come to you.
We have the unique situation of being near the community bar-restaurant, yet far enough away and on the beach, to have peace and quiet, with adjoining rainforest and sound of waves. We also have the Carbonera River with its cold, clear water pouring out nearby into Golfo Dulce.
Our property drains well so that biting insects are not a problem, plus the grounds are lushly landscaped and the house is very large, great for families or friendship groups.
There is a "collectivo" bus that comes to the main road down our lane twice a day bound for town. There are also taxis, rental car companies and your thumb, for getting around.
Other Things to Note
At Casa Dos Rios we provide a sea kayak, boogie boards, rent out surfboards, offer meal services, have yard games and can provide concierge services. Seasonally, we also offer the option of a sailing tour on our 36 ft. Columbia sailboat, Sorrento. Ask us about this!
We are off the grid...our electricity comes from solar panels, and the energy is stored in batteries. We have electricity in the form of 110-volt outlets in every room, with some components powered with 12 Volts. Use of a blender, laptop, or low voltage appliance is acceptable, but we know that our solar power cannot handle heat producing appliances like hair dryers, toasters, curling irons or electric rollers. To preserve solar power, please turn off lights, laptops and fans when they are not in use.
You will find the house fully equipped with kitchen supplies, but you will need to bring all groceries out with you. See our Grocery and Supply List for suggested shopping. We are located very near the local jungle bar/restaurant, so you will have the option of eating some of your lunch or dinner meals there (Except for the months of Sept., Oct., and Nov.) during which she has been closing and traveling each year). We can also direct you to some other options for lunches or dinners. Be on the safe side, by being prepared with plenty of supplies in the house.
We provide sheets, towels and kitchen towels for you. We ask that you conserve the use of these by hanging towels up for repeated usage. We change the linens after three nights, and the towels upon request, or after three days of use. If you need fresh linens sooner, just let the managers know. The house is cleaned every 4th day during your stay. We can arrange more frequent cleanings at a small extra fee.
We strongly recommend that you lock all valuables (money, passports and important papers) in our safe, located under the bathroom counter. The bathroom and bedrooms are lockable, and other valuables, such as cameras, laptops, etc. may be locked in those rooms when you leave the house. Be sure to lock the shutter windows that open the bedrooms up to the living area when you are locking bedrooms.
There is no fire department and wood burns quickly. Please use extreme care when lighting any matches or lighters, burning candles, or using the stove or oven.We prefer that you smoke cigarettes out on the porches or outside the house. This property is located in a very remote area, no street lights here. Please use flashlights or headlamps when wondering around outdoors after dark.
Casa dos Rios was an amazing and beautiful place. I came with a group of 6 people, and the house was very spacious and perfect for hanging out with friends. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and the house is airy and comfortable. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained and surrounded by incredible wildlife. We saw monkeys, scarlet macaws, and parrots, and even whales from the kitchen window. The beach is right in front of the house, so very accessible. My only regret is that we did not have a car, so the best surfing beaches were a little hard to get to. Playa Pan Dulce is technically walking distance, however its a bit of a hike to carry a surf board that far. I would definitely consider staying in this house again if I return to this incredible area.

About the Host, Melanie
We, the owners, are Kim and Melanie Norman, who sometimes live in Fayetteville, in Garden View Flat and most of the time live in Costa Rica in Cabo Matapalo of the Osa Peninsula. We love living in the rainforest and we offer a guest house called Casa Dos Rios in Costa Rica. Our residency in Fayetteville goes all the way back to 1974 when I, Melanie, moved from my home state of Louisiana with my sister, Liz. It is her number you will reach when you call for more information. She has been a Coldwell Banker agent, and before that, an agent in my real estate company in Fayetteville, for more than eight years. I used to own and run Seven Hills Realty in Fayetteville (I was a broker for 30 years). Now I am a broker for Prime Real Estate in Fayetteville, AR, and also do some real estate activities when on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica.
Kim, a builder, is now retired from building, but occasionally does some small projects and property investing for flipping. When on the Osa, Kim and I offer sailing tours on our 36 ft. Columbia sail boat, named Sorrento.
I love gardening, cooking, water color art, yoga and dance. We enjoy living in the tropics, but will always return to our precious community and friends in NW Arkansas. It is truly a special place! We call it our North American rainforest.
GVF P.S.: most of the art on the walls of the apartment were done by Liz or I. We hope you like it.
CDR P.S.: We have one of the best locations of Cabo Matapalo, for convenience, fresh water river mouth, and the local eclectic gathering place, right down our lane, called Buena Esperenza. (Martina's Bar-Restaurant).
We pride ourselves with a high level of service, as, we love the hospitality business and living on site (in a manager house) allows us to meet and enjoy people from all over the globe!
