Other things to note
Getting to Arete Apartments from Chania Airport

Firstly, it is important that you are made fully aware that we are not on any main road, we are not even on the village main road, we are located down a small, agricultural, single vehicle type track. You won't see us on Google Street maps, we don't have a street name or address, it's just Arete Apartments. We give full detailed directions but also the option to call us from the village and we will come and meet you.

Other things to know – Your hire car should have a map in it, locate MALEME on the map (West of Chania) our village XAMOUDOCHORI (could be spelt Ksamoudochori) is 3kms inland from Maleme, total distance is appx 30kms, most of the journey is on the National Road, all signs are in Greek and English, driving is erratic and you are advised to be on your guard at all times, finally don’t panic if you get lost call us and we will guide you in.
Home 28210 62756 or Mobile 6942415268

From Chania Airport you will be heading for SOUDA.

Follow the road out of the airport, turn left at the first major junction and then straight on past a monastery and turn right at the next junction. Follow signs to CHANIA. (could be spelt HANIA in places). DO NOT ENTER IN TO CHANIA YOU ARE GOING TO SOUDA.

Drive for appx 4 kms and you come to a roundabout, take the second right to SOUDA.

You will now be driving down the hill, the sea is on your left, towards Souda. When you reach the bottom of the hill you drive straight through a small place with a narrow road.

When you reach a set of traffic lights you will be turning right.

Turn left at the very large busy and open junction just after the lights.

You are now on a larger road heading towards the National Road.

When you approach the National Road, you will see a bridge in front of you that the National Road runs on, you will turn right before the bridge. Follow signs towards KOLIMBARI and KISSAMOS/KASTELLI, travelling west.

Once on the National Road, Chania is on your right, do not go there, keep on the National Road

After appx 10 minutes look for signs to PLATANIAS, OLD NATIONAL ROAD, this is your junction to get off.

Now you've turned off (keep right look left at the exit junction) follow the road around to the right, you pass a small shop on your right, continue around the corner and straight on until you come to a T junction with a large blue sign in front of you with lots of village names on it. TURN LEFT and stay on this road, it's the old coastal road.

A few minutes later through Gerani and Pirgos Psilonerou, you’re in Maleme. The sea is on your right, Mountains on the left at all times.

When you get close to Maleme you'll see a large Hotel on the right The Aegean Palace, a small builder’s yard and a big builder’s yard with palettes of stone etc and the sign for MALEME on the right.

When you get into Maleme you will see a JET GARAGE on the right, it’s closed now so no lights, you will also see a courier office ACS just after the garage, TURN LEFT. The sign for our village is not visible until the last minute, KSAMOUDOCHORI 3kms, and there is a small shop on the corner that sells traditional Cretan produce. The turning is narrow so take your time.

(You've gone too far if you get to the ceramic shop on the left or the Supermarket INKA on your right.)

After locating the turning for the village follow the road up, it takes you under the National Road, up past the olive oil factory on the left and into our village. As you come in to the village, around a bend, you will see the Kafeneon on the right.

Drive straight up past the Kafeneon for about 200 mtrs until you come to a whitewashed, blue shuttered little building, TURN RIGHT here. There is a mirror on this turn also.

Now you’ve turned right you’re on a slight decline, 50 metres down you TURN LEFT at the first small house, it’s a small track with lots of pipe work at its entrance. If you get to the church you’ve passed it, turn round.

Immediately after you turn left down this track you TURN LEFT again, it’s only about 15 mtrs so DO NOT CONTINUE DOWN THE HILL. Look for the Arete sign, now you’re on our lane to the house, it’s not long but narrow and there is a drop into a field on the right and then an olive grove. Towards the end of the olive grove the lane takes you down a hill and in to Arete.

Welcome.
You’ve made it.

But lets presume you miss the PLATANIAS turning (number 10) you can get off at the next junction which is TAVRONITIS.
Turning right off the National Road, head into Tavronitis and turn right at the T junction, drive out of the village and over the bridge, the road goes left around a big bend and you pass the Maleme Airfield and Military base on both sides of the road, keep going past 2 big EKO garages into Maleme past the Supermarket INKA mentioned above now on your left and then you will approach our turning from the other side so the Cretan Products shop is on your right and the turn just on it.

The local supermarket in Maleme mentioned above at point 14 is called INKA, it’s Greek and very good. There are no shops in the village so if you want to shop before you come to us then here’s the place to do it.

Remember, if in doubt call us. Home 28210 62756 or Mobile 6942415268

GPS 35°30'10.4"N 23°50'11.0"E

If you have GPS then be warned that previous guests who relied only on GPS got lost in our village. We advise that you use both GPS and directions. If coming from Chania the GPS only method will take you through the town itself and not straight on to the national road as detailed in the directions.
