About This Listing
Set in a serene waterfront setting on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, Light Landing creates a fun and relaxing retreat in proximity to Washington, D.C., Annapolis, and Baltimore, with pier, kayaks, hot tub, fire pit on a country-like acre.
The sunrise and sunset water views from this light but cozy space are particularly dazzling in fall and winter--when guests seem just as thrilled to be here as those who come during the warmer months when they can sunbathe, paddle, or swim.
Light Landing's shady lawn and bright open spaces; electric 'wood stove' indoors + hot tub, bbq, and firepit outdoors; huge screened porch; tree swings; English 'tree gardens', kayaks, and our relaxing pier afford a peaceful and inspirational setting any time of the year for your stay in the Washington Metro area.
Many individuals or couples take a break from their business or sight-seeing for a restorative or romantic retreat; others come to Light Landing to complete writing, art, or other projects that require sustained focus or a secluded work environment. We've had countless happy couples for anniversaries, honeymoons, and even wedding nights, all of whom felt they had plenty of privacy and most of them have become 'regulars!'
Some guests even utilize the owner’s skilled support in writing, editing, and coaching to restore creativity or resolve stubborn life/health/work issues.
THE ASCENDED SPACE: Light, modern, open studio loft with bay-view window seat, creek-view skylights. Completely private from our house downstairs, the Flat has its own entrance on the water side of the house. Luxurious marble bath with deep freestanding tub and large European shower. Leather couch, writing desk, well-appointed granite wetbar/kitchen with microwave and refrigerator/ freezer, bar- height table and other indoor/outdoor spaces for cooking, dining, work, play, roasting marshmallows, and--of course-- relaxing. Queen bed, Wireless internet with varied work spaces, Flat screen TV/DVD player, HDMI cable for Netflix, I-Pod doc. Includes use of pier, screened porch, fire pit, BBQ, hot tub, kayaks, swings, entire country-like acreage. $108-129/night, $648-718/week, $1600-2400/month, depending on season.
THE GET-AWAY: Smaller waterfront Caribbean/antique bedroom with double bed [cannot be rented separately; only as an accessory to Ascended Space to be used by part of YOUR party--i.e., someone like a friend, child, other couple who can share the upstairs living space and bath, but want separate bedrooms]. Adjoins the studio loft space (separated only by stairway and bifold door). Use of all amenities listed above. $60/night, $300/week, $900/month for one extra person (these charges increase by 20% when a second person shares the 'Get-Away').
3 BEDROOM/2 BATH WATERFRONT COTTAGE: If you find the dates you wanted are booked, please check out out NEW listing for the Cozy Chesapeake Waterfront Cottage next door!! (Hope you'll take a peek anyway, even if the dates aren't booked, and tell all your friends!) With so many return guests wanting to bring friends, family, or their dog, my friends and I have banned together to buy the cottage next door just for this purpose, and so far our guests have been just as thrilled with it and happy there as they have been in the Flat. See the entire description by clicking on my (Shawn's) profile and scroll down the left side to "My LIstings."
(PLEASE NOTE: For single-night stays, there is an extra $30 cleaning fee. I add it after you reserve through AirBnB's 'Alter Reservation' function. [$45 when both rooms are rented for one night only. $55 extra for a single-night stay in the cottage.]).
So far, our guests have been thrilled with us, and we've been thrilled with them! What a cool thing. Hope to see you soon!
Guests have full access to the shady waterfront lawn at their accommodation, plus the hot tub, kayaks, make-shift paddle board, pier (including crab pots, fishing, or swimming when season permits), swings, 1 acre of land, gas and charcoal grill, outdoor recliner chairs, as well as dining table and chairs, and screened porch associated with my house (The pier, swings, water craft, screened porch and hot tub are sometimes shared with guests at our Cottage next door. So far that has not been a problem).
Also, by request, you can book a special session with me of "The Work," (of Byron Katie), an amazing and very simple form of self-inquiry for relieving stress and solving problems.
Interaction with Guests
My daughter and I tend to leave the waterfront for you and the Cottage guests. I am very available for recommendations, directions, or questions, but also leave you with all the privacy you want! (The Flat has a separate entrance, and seems to have had plenty of privacy even for our wedding night and honeymoon couples--who tend to come back for anniversaries, too!
Sleepy little town with just enough services--VERY closeby despite our country-like ambiance. Some great spots for whatever you want to eat, many of them waterfront dining whether indoors or out, where you can also pick crabs--the local delicacy--or have crabcakes, or yummy Cream of Crab or Maryland Crab (vegetable) soup! Grocery store, pharmacy, fitness center, banks, consignment/antique stores all nearby or on the short scenic drives in the Guidebook. Annapolis is just a short trip and an amazing destination for a daytrip seeing its beautiful historic sights and neighborhoods or Amish market, or just a trip in for dinner--which we often do--to a waterfront downtown loaded with shops and restaurants or to catch a movie.
Nestled on a country-like acre in a surprisingly convenient corner of the Chesapeake Bay, this unique area is just over 20 minutes south of Annapolis and 45+ minutes from Wash DC, Alexandria VA, or Baltimore. Guests who have access to a car (or serious bike or shallow draft boat) can easily converge here and use it as a relaxing waterfront "home" while you're touring the area or even taking a "staycation" and commuting to work. After a quick trip from a number of cities or airports, all you need to do upon check-in is the following:
* hang out and chat or snooze under the large shady trees,
* swing or kayak or yoga to your heart's content,
* play Frisbee, football, soccer w/ your dog, friends, or kids,
* read or work on your tan as you gaze at the water,
* cook out, cook in, or pick crabs at a table on the lawn,
* savor the nearby waterfront dining,
* cozy up, watch DVDs, or play games by a wood fire.
Or just settle in to the pace of the birds and the bay breeze for a week or two. :-)
Other Things to Note
3 BEDROOM/2 BATH WATERFRONT COTTAGE: If you find the dates you wanted for the Flat are booked, please check out out NEW listing for the Cozy Chesapeake Waterfront Cottage next door!! (Hope you'll take a peek anyway, even if the dates aren't booked, and tell all your friends!)

There are 2 listings here at Light Landing: the 3 bedroom/2 bath Cottage and the Flat. The 'Get-Away' bedroom just supplements the Flat if you need more sleeping spaces, and will never be rented to another party when you're here.) Once in a while I also rent out my entire house for a bigger party, or if there is a conflict on an important date, so feel free to ask about that also.
PLEASE NOTE: For single-night stays, here is a $30 cleaning fee for the Flat and a $15 fee for the Get-Away bedroom. It will be added either as part of a special offer, or after-the-fact via reservation alteration once the reservation has been made.
Welcome!!! Important Rule: Relax, Have FUN, and Let me Know if You need Anything!
When you arrive, park to the left nearest our big tree and walk left toward the water--either through or around our huge screened porch (if you walk through it--watch the step UP near hot tub). Then just follow the brick pavers to the little stoop. Your private entrance will be the ORANGE door up the steps.
:-) Be sure to close the porch door every time as our sweet little dog Winnie can slip out if the door drags and stays open a bit. PLEASE Double-CHECK IT EVEN IF YOU DON"T SEE HER, AS WE COULD LET HER OUT LATER.
***ALL WATER ACTIVITIES INCLUDING HOT TUB ARE UNDERTAKEN AT YOUR OWN RISK.
***No DIVING. NO JUMPING UNTIL YOU HAVE TESTED WATER DEPT (TIDAL WATERS CAN SOMETIME BE VERY SHALLOW). ABSOLUTELY NO JUMPING OFF SIDES OF PIER--END ONLY AFTER TESTING). I"m wanting to add that I highly recommend wearing water shoes if you swim. As much as I love the warm silky mud at the bottom, it can also have glass shards or wire, etc. embedded in it. The main warning about swimming in the Bay is to not do it when you have a fresh cut or wound, so good idea to minimize the chance of stepping on something that could injure you. Thanks!
:-) It is critical not to leave the fire-pit burning unattended or without the screen cover. Please douse it with water when you retire. Also put caps on the Tikki torches (or ask me to).
*No candles except the ones provided in glass chimneys; NEVER leave them burning unsupervised.
*Please use only non-abrasives sponges or cleaners on granite countertop, sinks, tub.
*We are dog lovers, but don't allow dogs in the Flat. We have had guests' ask if their friends could bring quiet dogs for the day--but they must stay outside.
*We DO allow well-trained dogs to stay at our cottage next door--ask about that if you wanted to bring yours!
*Check-in and out are sometimes negotiable if there are not guests before or after you, or if someone is leaving early/arriving late. :-) Default is 3 pm check-in and 1 pm check-out. Let me know if you want something different and I'll see if I can make it work.
**No smoking within 100 feet of the house, cottage, or waterfront.
Thanks so much! Have a great time here. :-)
Words can't describe how wonderful the location of this apartment is. It's so peaceful and beautiful. Our best memories will be of us sitting at the end of the pier with a drink watching the sun going down.
Shawn had the place impeccably prepared for our arrival and even though she couldn't be there when we arrived everything was self explanatory - intructions in a binder, email instructions from Shawn and the door ooen. The place is a stunning and peaceful oasis no doubt due to the care and management of the host.
Shawn was a wonderful host. She welcomed us when we arrived and gave us a great tour and talked to us about some great places to go around the area. She was extremely welcoming and answered any questions we had or helped us with anything we needed. We would be thrilled to stay there again!
My stay at Shawn's home was short but very nice. Her home is located at the end of a street and has a beautiful view of the water directly behind her house. I wish I would have had more time to enjoy the outdoor activities that Shawn offers but maybe next time. I arrived late and Shawn was very welcoming regardless of the hour. The space itself was an entire loft, very nicely decorated and very comfortable. I would (have) highly recommend Shawn's space to others and would certainly stay there again. Great space with a great host.
Our "Babymoon" at the Chesapeake Waterfront Flat was everything we needed and more as we prepare for the arrival of our second baby! Shawn was a joy to work with and she made sure our stay was a great one! The manual spelled out everything we needed to know about things to do and places to eat in the area. We will most definitely be back in the near future with our newest addition:)
We loved this place. Everything was as represented. We were amazed how close it is to DC. Shawn was a very helpful host and left us to our own enjoyment. She did happily text us to alert us about the firefly show in the trees. We loved the place so much we booked it for two more visits this summer. Can't express a better recommendation than that.
Shawn was a great host. She has a whole welcome package of information prepared that she emails in advance, which was very helpful. Her property is absolutely beautiful! The apartment was smaller than it looked in the photos, but perfectly comfortable and mostly well equipped. If you're looking for a relaxing, beautiful getaway - this is the place. My mum and I enjoyed sitting on the deck chairs on the lawn and on the dock looking out over the water. And we were able to get redbox dvds from the grocery store down the road to watch on the nice TV in the apartment at night. Would certainly recommend for a weekend away from DC!

About the Host, Shawn
I'm thinking the best description of me for your purposes as potential guests appears in the reviews! I'm someone who is just here being incredibly grateful to live in this gorgeous, quiet, nature-filled spot on the Chesapeake Bay; to have this opportunity to share it with others; and to have connected through Air BnB with such lovely people. I'm always thrilled to see how much these individuals, couples, and families enjoy staying here, and am hoping that what they have said about me will tell you what you need to know.
Beyond that.... I will be very happy to answer any questions you may have about my diverse interests and pursuits, as well as the travel destinations I am currently exploring. The most recent was taking our adopted daughter back to see China, her birthland, with a quick stop in Germany on the way home!
Finally, I love my OTHER work as a life/author-coach. As a Certified Faciliator of The Work of Byron Katie, I love to share with folks a simple, predictable tool that has helped me SO much in my life--knowing a way to capitalize on our stressful thoughts about the VERY person or thing that upsets us--turning them into highly creative solutions and greater peace and love each time! Very cool.
