This second room is an add-on to our main guest room/suite: See https://airbnb.com/h/marin-oasis-in-wonderful-location. Friends traveling together can book this second room (upstairs) along with the main guest suite (ground floor).

Our solar-powered, 5-bedroom house in San Rafael is a 5-minute walk to Dominican U and Santa Sabina Center. Enjoy the garden, koi pond, hummingbirds. An oasis located just a mile from downtown. Easily access beaches, Mt. Tam, wine country, San Francisco, W. Marin.

The space
When both rooms are booked, 4 people can be accommodated in 2 bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. Main guest suite is on main floor. The 2nd guest room is on the second floor, up a curving staircase (15 stairs). It overlooks the koi pond area. Each room has a queen-size bed. Blackout shades let you sleep late. Your private bathroom is across a hallway. In addition to the queen bed, this room has a 5-foot-tall book case with space for stashing your stuff, plus a closet and wireless Internet. Parking is off-street in a cutout area.
The bedroom where my husband and I sleep is down the hall and around the corner from this guest room.

Guest access
Please see listing, “Room (or 2) in Unique University-Area Home” for more information.
Relax in the spacious, high-ceilinged living room or the Asian-style garden with koi pond and hummingbirds. You are welcome to share the TV room and to use our cookware and dishes, flatware, glasses, and cups, as long as you clean up after.
Check in after 3:00 PM but no later than 9:00 PM unless prearranged. Check out by 11:00 AM. No smoking.

Other things to note
There are 15 stairs to the second floor, where the second room is.
There is a cat. He is shy and is never allowed in the guest rooms. I vacuum frequently, but he roams the shared areas. I will keep him in our room if an allergic guest is present.

San Rafael, California, United States

Marin County is a spectacular place for hiking, bicycling, sailing, and kayaking. San Rafael's upscale Dominican neighborhood feels safe and it's popular with walkers and cyclists. It's named for the nearby university, which is picturesque and nicely landscaped. Our street is wooded and our house is a block away from Gold Hill, an open-space area with hiking/biking trails and good views. There's an art cinema downtown, along with restaurants, beer pubs, and music venues. In season, there's a Thursday night Farmers Market downtown where you can buy meals, listen to music, and people-watch. Nearby towns offer even more amenities. There are 3 grocery stores (United, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods) 1 -2 miles away, and the Sunday morning Farmers Market is one exit north up the freeway, beside the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Civic Center.

When I travel I like to meet “regular” people. Many people like to stay in a “first-class bubble” but that makes the experience less colorful. I've been lucky enough to get to visit Italy, Thailand, Fiji, Panama, Belize, Costa Rica, Colombia, Germany, Greece, England, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Morocco, Mexico, Cuba and Canada. (Lucky!!!) I'm interested in art and writing, the natural environment, human behavior. I enjoy the company of dogs and cats, and humans who are funny and thoughtful. I appreciate good food, good books, and good movies. I play Mah Jongg twice a week. Matt and I have been married 42 years. Our sons are 28 and 32 years old. The younger one was in the Peace Corps and now lives in Atlanta, where he’s getting his Masters in Arts Education. The older one is an attorney and lives nearby. My favorite books include Angle of Repose, Unsheltered, Sapiens, Everything Is Illuminated, and This Boy's Life. I still listen to the Talking Heads, Pretenders, and Steely Dan. Also Bonnie Raitt and Motown. I like to sing along with Patsy Cline, but who doesn't?

During your stay
We’re Bay Area natives and can provide tips on local points of interest.
We love the Bay Area! We can point you to good/fun local restaurants, entertainment venues, art galleries and open-space areas. We've lived in Sausalito, Mill Valley and Larkspur, so we know about those towns, too. We want you to have a great trip and to love it here. At the same time, we value your privacy as well as our own, and are quite content to give you space. Laura sometimes needs to concentrate on work while at home. We sometimes have friends and family over for a meal or mah Jong.
