Puerto Viejo is a small yet cosmopolitan community located in the South Caribbean, the area offers a huge variety of activities and experiences for all tastes. The town itself is edged with family friendly beaches, the streets buzzing with international restaurants, reggae bars, shops and great nightlife. The area is well known for it's world famous surfing, stunning natural beauty, eco-tourism and proximity to National Parks (Cahuita and Manzanillo) and Wildlife Refuges (Jaguar and Aviarios). This is a fantastic place to come and unwind, enjoy the spas, yoga and alternative health activities, take the many and varied tours and sample the great tastes, sounds and crafts to be found on its streets and at the weekly farmers market. A perfect spot to live the genuine Caribbean experience.
The apartment is just a 5 minute walk to town and the shops, restaurants, bars and beaches. Check out the incredible farmers market on Saturday mornings held behind the 'Casa de Cultura' for amazing local and artisanal products, the 'Bio Mercado' next to Hotel Puerto Viejo for ALL ORGANIC produce, 'Cafe Rico' on the back street for the best breakfast in town, 'Puerto Pirata Deli' on the beach for lunch, 'Salsa Brava' for sunset drinks and snacks, 'Congo Reeff', 'Stashu's', or 'Borojos' for dinner, 'Lazy Mon' for some live music and 'Old Harbour Supermarket' for a more diverse product range.
Puerto Viejo is easy to access by public transport from the capital/airport. Once here it is easy to get around on foot but it is great fun to rent a bicycle to cruise around and explore the area better, there is an inexpensive and reliable bus service operating along the coast and various car rental and taxi services available here also.
Other Things to Note
The apartment is located in a residential neighbourhood, it is located off to the side of the main part of town and is accessed by a rustic gravel road. The space is part of a semi-detached building, comprising the rental apartment on one side and our house on the other. The immediate area is made up of private dwellings and there are no hotels in the 'barrio', it is one of the only truly local neighbourhoods around, offering a more genuine and unique experience of local life during your stay.
No unregistered guests are allowed on the premises at any time without prior authorization from the owner.

Please do not bring any food or sweetened drinks in the bedroom.
Please put away all food either in the refrigerator or well-sealed in plastic boxes/bags.

Please try to be as eco-friendly as possible during your stay (house guide provided).
Our stay at Sam's was excellent. The apartment had plenty of space, was very clean and had everything we needed and more.
Sam and Papa were both very approachable, friendly and helpful with any questions we had. Sam seemed to genuinely care if we were comfortable, had slept well and we're having a good time.
We really enjoyed getting in to living in the place they've created, feeling a lot closer to nature than you would in a hotel. Maybe we're just a bit sad but we found it pretty fun to leave our food waste outside and come back to find it has been taken away by the jungle.
The location feels quiet but is 5 minutes away from the beach, shops, cash machines, bus stop etc. Also the Guetto Girl Soda which did us a tasty dinner one night.
Sam's detailed instructions in getting to her's from San Jose were also very clear and accurate (personally I wouldn't bother with a taxi unless you have a huge amount of luggage).
PERFECT. Absolutely perfect. My Fiance' & I stayed with Sam & Papa for 3 months while I was teaching and they were a dream to stay with. They were always asking if we had everything we needed and if everything was going good. Anything we needed they were there and the place itself was the cutest! It has everything you need for a short or long stay in the Caribbean; dishes, drinking water, towels, fresh sheets, books, & more! Oh, and how could I almost forget there is a private relaxing hammock & yoga platform right outside your door as well!
The location is perfect for all the fun in Puerto Viejo and about a 3 min walk from the ocean at beautiful Playa Negra. Loved everything about this spot and hosts!
We had a great time in Puerto Viejo with Sam and her husband. They offer a nice clean apartment off the main grid and were very friendly in helping us to organize our trip to San Jose (during Semana Santa). Only thing to consider is that the 300m walk from the Main Street is unpaved so you will have to carry your luggage for a bit.
Sam was a lovely hostess! Her and her family are right near by should you need anything, but you never would know it....very discreet, and private feeling. Location was set back behind tree line, and down a gravel road, so it was away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown and very serene; yet very close walking distance to the beach, shop, bars...etc. Their dog Sparrow is always around, so you feel like you have your own watch dog looking out for you. I know some reviewers stated musty smelling bedding, but I believed they addressed it with some new sheets. I did not find it musty at all. If you're looking for a place that is safe, clean, and close to activities this is the place. One thing to note, the gravel road is not too fun on bikes (or by foot for that matter), luckily it is a very brief ride/walk though. Also, at first (driving in at night and first time in Costa Rica) this street seemed a little sketchy, but I can attest that it is not at all; both day and night. I would recommend this to anyone just looking to get away for some fun in the sun!
We enjoyed our stay in this rustic apartment. Location was quiet & we liked the short walk to town & beach. Sam & her family are friendly & responsive hosts. We like how she is so environmentally conscious, making every effort to preserve this beautiful part of Costa Rica. Really enjoyed the hammock & patio.
Sam and Papa are great people and we felt very welcome in their home. Sam gave us lots of helpful advice and overall the experience was great we even stayed an extra day. The house is like described, we like how eco-friendly the house is and we tried to do our bit as well. It was right on the edge of the jungle which I found amazing especially at night with all the sounds. And we felt well protected by Sparrow and Pepper. Perfect for our needs, simple clean cozy and close to everything. The town was only few steps from the house, the beach few steps further. The best advice in Puerto Viejo is to rent a bike so you can explore the surrounding beaches and towns as well all within reasonable distance. Our plan was to stay 3 days we stayed 5 with one night in Panama.
