The Space

Cosy 1 bedroom apartment with Kitchen/Dining Area, Bedroom, Bathroom and Garden. There is a double bed, hot water, WIFI, fan and screened windows and doors. The apartment has a shady outdoor space with hammock to kick back and relax or to practice yoga, plus a garden area with beautiful tropical flowers, butterflies and birds, and the occasional sloth passing by too! We are nestled at the edge of the jungle and surrounded by the sounds of nature, so close to the beach you can hear the waves at night.

The apartment is in a local residents neighbourhood only 300 meters from the coral reef beaches and town center. Puerto Viejo is a small yet cosmopolitan community which offers a huge variety of great nightlife, international restaurants, reggae bars, and shops. The area is well known for it's world famous surfing, stunning natural beauty, eco tourism and proximity to National Parks and Wildlife Refuges, This is a fantastic place to come and unwind. Enjoy the spas, yoga and alternative health activities, take the many and varied tours and sample the great tastes, sounds and crafts to be found on its streets. A perfect spot to live the genuine Caribbean experience.

  • Sam was a great host! She is very friendly and seems genuinely interested in your conversations and any questions you have. The apartment is perfect if you want to be a short distance outside of Puerto Viejo. It's a nice easy walk or bike ride to beaches, shops, grocery stores and restaurants. The linens were clean but smelled sort of sour, probably due to the humidity at the coast. It's difficult to get anything to completely dry out. It's also nice to have the option to cook your own meals.

  • My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Sam and Papa's little cottage in the trees. Puerto Viejo itself was life changing for us. We deeply appreciated the great efforts they made towards protecting and loving the planet. The house is extremely eco friendly. Laying in the hammock each morning listening to all the little critters singing to one another was dream like. We weren't able to get any hot water but if you really feel you need it to work Papa would be glad to come over and fix it for you. The apartment is clean and simple with everything you need, just make sure to not leave any food or drinks out. Their dogs were really cute and Sparrow is very good at his job! Sam and Papa in general are really laid back, kind people, I feel lucky to have met them.

It's located in a very convenient beautiful nook, steps from the beach, supermarkets, and local restaurants. Renting bikes for a day or two was a perfect addition to our trip and allowed us to see what Puerto Viejo had to offer. Down the road a bit is the Jaguar Rescue Center which is a MUST! What those volunteers are doing there is significant (you can interact with baby monkeys.)

All in all, perfect, beautiful, revitalizing and pure, amazing stay in an amazing place!

  • My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Puerto Viejo a great deal. We had a little difficulty finding this place, as it was really dark when we arrived. We were so grateful that Sam stayed up waiting for us. You have to travel down a long, dark dirt road and then its on your left after you cross a concrete bridge. Follow her directions and you shouldn't have an issue. I'm sure its much easier in the day time.

We were a little cautious walking at night to get to town, so we ended up driving most times when we left. There's great parking everywhere so this was no problem. Please bring a flashlight if you plan on walking!

The apartment is situated right in the forest so we heard and saw so many animals. I wasn't a huge fan of the bugs, but I'm a city girl and my husband kept laughing at me. Sam's husband was nice enough to kill a giant spider that I was too chicken to approach! (you can't take the city out of the girl).

The bed was really comfy and the apartment was very clean. My only issue was trying to figure out how to use the shower, which was a little complicated to get hot water going, but we figured it out eventually. Sam was a great host and I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for budget accommodations off the beaten track. It's a quiet area right near the forest. You'll wake up to birds chirping and see toads hopping around. There was even a lizard resting on the hammock - so cute! It was also about a 10 minute walk to the beach. Renting a bike would be perfect staying here.

I never had a chance to cook, but everything was provided. We utilized the little fridge to keep drinks cold. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and I was really fond of the area. Lots of bars, restaurants and beautiful beaches. Everyone is very friendly and most people are welcoming to tourists. I'll definitely be back to visit Puerto Viejo in the future!

  • Sam was a great host! She was very personable, warm, and helpful. She helped us with figuring out the bus schedule for our departure and offered advice on local restaurants. One that she suggested ended up being one of the best places we ate! When my husband was sick she gave advice on natural remedies and was ready to offer suggestions on the best medical services in town if it was needed.

We loved the little apartment as well. It is very well kept, tidy, and stocked with everything we could have needed. The hammock was one of my favorite parts, it was perfect for an afternoon nap while catching the breeze in the shade. It is a cozy little place, perfect for our honeymoon. We loved getting to have the breeze come in through the screen doors. It is a short walk from the main area of town and an even shorter walk to the beach.

  • We spent 4 night in this typical house, just near the forest and 5 minutes walk to the entrance of Puerto Viejo and a black sand beach . Sam and Papa live juste the next door , they were nice and gave us good advice to have a good stay. There were everything you need inside the home, and it was great to ear all the noise of animals on the night! Just think to bring with you a flash light on the night because the way to the house is very dark. Puerto viejo is a good place to stay , its easy by bus to go and leave, rent a bike and go to Punta Uva was very cool and wonderfull, visit the Tribute of Bri bri was very interisting and the beach inside the Cahuita park was so amazing ! Pura vida

  • What a wonderful experience it was to stay with Sam and Papa! From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome and right at home. The apartment is cozy but comfortable, with everything you need right at hand. The location is perfect; walking into the heart of Puerto Viejo or to the beach is less than 5 minutes down a short gravel road where you'll see plenty of birds and lizards, crabs, flowers, and children playing. The apartment is also a perfect jumping off point for other area activities, with easy access to busses that will take you north to Cahuita National Park, or south to Punta Uva and Manzanillo (we fell in love with the beach at Punta Uva - be sure to climb to the top of the point).

We'd be happy to stay with Sam and Papa again any time! And hopefully someday, we will!

  • I just spend 10 weeks at the apartment with Sam and Papa, and it was a really wonderfull experience. When you stay in the rainforest it is really nice to have a clean and well maintained "base camp" to return to every day, and so was this place. Dry, clean and hardly any bugs at all. Papa and Sam are caring and welcoming people, Papa came to pick me up at the bus station, and they even offered to help me out when I was feeling sick. They know a lot about the town and nature, and you are free to help yourself to aloe vera, lemon grass etc from their surrounding gardens.
I am very happy that I chose to stay here for Puerto Viejo experience!

  • Although we didn't have the pleasure of meeting Sam since she was out of town, her husband Papa greeted us and was very warm and welcoming. The place itself was perfect for us with a hammock in the front entrance area, as pictured, and everything was super clean. There are three dogs on the property, with one (Sparrow is his name I think) towards the front, so it was nice in the evenings to have extra security. The location is very close to town-- basically just a short walk down a gravel drive-- but it is not lit, so I'd warn to be aware when walking in the dark. Although, this is cautioned everywhere in town in the late evenings so use common sense.
Overall, we were very happy with our stay in Sam's guesthouse!
