If you're looking for an authentic Brooklyn Experience; Look No Further! I'm an Artist living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I’m respectful, kind and accommodating. I share my unusual home with like-minded creative and alternative lifestyle travelers.
You are welcome to stay in my guest loft. This is a great short-term space for the budget traveler that does not require much privacy. The "Cozy Fort" is built above the door in the main living area.
This is a sex-positive shared living environment and because of the unusual space, the sights and sounds of intimacy are not always completely private. However, respect for each other is essential and discretion is preferable.
This is a fairly large studio, it's spacious feeling even when everyone is home. I have been very lucky and met amazing people through this service.
I will provide clean sheets for your double-bed and warm blankets if needed. I also have plenty of storage space if you should need it. Under the loft I have a wardrobe just for your use with plenty of drawers and a place to lock up your computer or other small valuables if you are concerned. The loft is relatively private, comfortable and clean. However, it is not great for couples seeking a romantic vacation or anyone who needs absolute silence to sleep. It has the unusual entrance and exit of an industrial slide. It is not particularly challenging to use, but can be a problem If you are a bit tipsy from going on a pub crawl in the neighborhood, uncoordinated or tired.
You have total access to my space, including the kitchen. I have a manually operated freight elevator that is off limits but can be used to transport heavy items if you require. I have fantastic roof access with beautiful views of the New York Skyline. Bring your lap top computer and connect to my WiFi. If you sit in the right space you can enjoy the WiFi in the open air on the roof.
Interaction with Guests
I’m a busy guy during the week and often we will only see each other briefly. On the weekends I have more of a presence, but not by much. I’m quick to respond through email and text if you need me. I’m glad to chat and offer assistance at any time. However, I am not an overly interactive host.
My Artist's Loft is located on the top floor on a quiet street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This is a very safe and friendly part of Brooklyn to visit. The Franklin Avenue shops, restaurants and bars are just around the corner. Williamsburg and all it has to offer is just a short walk away.
The closest Subway station is the Greenpoint Ave G, also in walking distance is the Bedford Ave L and the Vernon Blvd 7. By subway, I am located 25 minutes from Union Square, 26 minutes from Times Square, 30 minutes from Central Park, 38 minutes from Tribeca and 25 minutes from the East Village. The B61 and B43 bus stop is only a block away and very helpful when weather is uncomfortable. JFK is one hour away by public transport and LGA is 25 minutes away by Cab.
Other Things to Note
Much of my furniture was custom made by the artist Jean-Marie Mauclet of JEMA Design and all my lighting is eco-friendly LED's.
Be respectful! Use your quiet voice late at night when others are sleeping. Turn off lights when you go to bed. Wash your dishes. Keep your area organized. Close the door behind you and be sure it locks. Make sure the toilet has flushed properly before leaving the bathroom. Recycle.
No running or jumping on the roof. Don't leave any trash on the roof. Do not invite a guest or guests over without notifying me. Be extra courteous to my neighbors.
Take care of the place and it will take care of you!
Lawrence is a fantastic host and his loft is amazing. The view of Manhattan is gorgeous. Every time I'd wake up in the middle of the night I'd find myself staring out the window. And this is coming from someone who lives in New York (my friend and I stayed at Lawrence's while in between apartments). The loft bed is for sleeping only. The slide is fun but is probably not suitable for anyone that isn't in good physical condition. As mentioned in the description, if you need privacy...don't stay here. The walls don't go up to the ceilings (including the bathroom, which means you'll probably wake someone up if you use the bathroom past midnight). There were bed bugs in the loft bed and I left with 10-15 bites. Luckily none of my luggage was near the bed and I tossed my clothes to be safe.
As soon as we arrived at the apartment it was absolutely perfect. The location is amazing, amazing view of Manhattan and great neighbourhood to stay if you are not looking to stay right in the center of the City. Greenpoint has amazing places to eat, walking distance and still easily get to Manhattan on (just 3 stations on the subway). My only criticism was the host was not around alot for most of our trip and at the beginning it was difficult to get the lights and heating to work which let the place down a bit. There was also therefore noone to open to roof terrace which we were very much looking forward to seeing. I got the sense this was normal for him not to be around as there were guests staying in each room at first, so 6 guests and myself and another(8 guests in total staying there). This caused issues in the morning as there was only one bathroom so difficult to get out the flat ontime as the bathroom was usually busy. Overall it is a lovely quirky flat with an amazing view and great location. Just don't go expecting a moderately private room/space as it more resembled a hostel with amount of guests in the limited space.
I was home for Christmas when they arrived but returned towards the end of their stay. I am normally home and was only away briefly. The pilot light blew out on the heater and despite my best effort of emails, texts and illustrations, neither Eleanor or her friend were able to light a match to fix it. I can't say that it was a language barrier as we both speak English. Unfortunately, someone in the building made too much noise one night on the roof during Eleanor's stay, neighbors complained and a lock was put on the access door. It has since been removed, but yes, it was disappointing for all. I'm sorry Eleanor missed out. On departure she left me some wonderful Chocolates, that I am still enjoying.
We stayed for one week in the Cozy Fort, which was a great experience. It was a challenge to climb up the slide and very funny. Unfortunately, the mattress contained bed bugs and we were bitten very badly. Furthermore, the walls are very thin and some do not even close with the ceiling, so you can hear everything. This is especially uncomfortable in the bath room. However, we had no trouble with loud roommates. Although, the cleaning comes once a week, it was pretty dirty when we arrived. Hair was laying all over the bath room floor. Nevertheless, Lawrence made it possible for us to come in although he was at work and we could check out when it suited us best, that was very nice as our flight was in the evening.
Yes, the walls are very thin and don't reach all the way to the ceiling. This is what a loft apartment in Brooklyn is like and I don't make any claims that it is different. I arranged for them to be able to check in while I was at work and I can assure you that once I arrived home the hair on the bathroom floor that a previous guest left was taken care of. I clean everyday and have a maid who comes weekly to help maintain things. After they checked out they told me they were bitten by bedbugs, I immediately fumigated, replaced the mattress and caulked holes in the wall near the bed; even though I couldn't find evidence of them. I've never had Bedbugs in my 12 years in this loft. Whatever bit them arrived through a guest and is long gone now.
We had a great time in New York in the loft at Greenpoint were we stayed 4 nights. The view from the terrace is absolutely beautiful and the art is fun. Lawrence is a friendly and helpful host. We thought the matress could be a bit thicker. But we slept good every night. So no complaints from us.
This is the real deal in Brooklyn style. Lawrence has done amazing things to make his cozy loft an unforgettable experience for travellers. My girlfriend and I stayed here for 8 nights, and if we didn't already have flights booked, who knows how long we would have lingered for.
Lawrence himself is an incredible host. He did everything to make us feel welcome from the moment we booked with detailed information about his awesome little neck of the woods, and was always willing to provide any help he could throughout our stay.
There are a couple of other rooms here that always had people in them which made it feel like a nice little shared house, when you're not out exploring the city.
There is a subway station just around the corner that can lead you anywhere you want in Manhattan or the surrounding burrows, and plenty of cool little bars and restaurants to boot.
This is a must if you're looking for a quiet, comfortable, authentic stay in New York City with a little twist. My only advice would be to not try and tackle the slide with socks on.
Needless to say though, we will definitely be seeing Lawrence again the next time we're in NYC.
