Mescal Canyon Retreat is part of our 20.5 acre property, Candlewood, in the central high desert of Arizona. We are located in the middle of the Verde Valley wine county, 18 miles from Sedona. Our property consists of our Main House, the Casita (caretakers house), 2 separate B&B rooms in an adjacent stone building, a Massage Studio, a Dance and Workshop Studio and my Architectural office. The entire property is "off the grid"which means we produce all of our electricity from photovoltaic panels. All of the buildings are built with GREEN and SUSTAINABLE materials. We have a large organic garden, a small flock of chickens and recently planted a 100 vine vineyard. Our property is bound on 3 sides by National Forest and 1 side by private land. We are located at the end of the road at the mouth of Mescal Canyon.
Mescal Canyon Retreat has two private B&B Rooms in a hand built stone building. The Sage Room has a private bath, king size bed and private patio with its own entrance from the outside. The Retreat also offers the Gold Room, with a king bed, and can be booked in addition to, or instead of, the Sage Room, if available. Please see separate listing on AirBnB for the Gold Room.
Both rooms have access to the Hot Tub Terrace and Hot Tub. This terrace is private with a wood burning fireplace and a wonderful view into the National Forest and Mingus Mountain. It is the best place on the property for star gazing.
Guests are served delicious organic breakfasts each morning of their stay. We provide organic coffee and teas, and serve eggs from our own chickens.
Please refer to our web site (website hidden) for more information
The B&B rooms are separated from the Main House by a courtyard. They are private from each other and each has it's own outdoor entrance. When walking along the brick pathway toward the B&B Rooms, the Sage Room entrance is on the left. The rooms also have access to a small supply room with a small refrigerator and additional room supplies.
This is a passive solar, native stone building. The building is hand built by us 30 years ago. Each room has it's own heat source and a ducted evaporative cooler for cooling in the hot summer days/nights. All rooms have sliding glass doors for good ventilation. The house is constructed of all natural and green materials.
Guests have the use of the private hot tub terrace with a hot tub and outdoor fireplace, a wonderful place to relax and star gaze.
If guests have a pet there is an additional charge of $15/night for each pet. Please inquire about pet restrictions.
This bed and breakfast was a Jem! Beautiful architecture combined with well manicured and maintained horticulture and a welcoming atmosphere made for a very comfortable, serine place to spend our time in the mountains! The breakfast each morning was delicious. The dogs on the property are effectionate and guided us on our hike up the canyon. The rooms were very clean. Rennie is in the process of building a communal kitchen and lounge for when guests want to prepare their own meals, which will be very useful! We had a wonderful stay and would recommend to couples from all around.
We loved the location—so close to all of the hiking in Sedona, close to the town of Cottonwood (which we found more charming than Sedona), and the seclusion of the property incredible! Really made for a wonderful retreat. Andrea and Rennie are so kind and hospitable. It was amazing to see their beautiful gardens and chicken coop... a true "garden to table" experience! Andreas breakfasts were delicious and wholesome. The hot tub might have been our favorite part...just imagine soaking under a blanket of stars after a glass of wine! The property is very unique and special. We definitely recommend this listing to anyone visiting Arizona.
host gave us a tour of their expansive compound, ideally located at the end of a very scenic canyon. The location is charming, with a welcoming cat and a hot tub. We enjoyed our breakfast and meeting our co-guests. Definitely of interest to anyone interested in sustainability as this location is entirely off the grid and powered by solar.
Our stay with Rennie and Andrea was more than we could have asked for! They were so welcoming and accommodating, giving us recommendations for hikes, restaurants, etc. Pictures don't do the retreat justice - it's so beautiful and well-cared for. The location is also great... secluded and peaceful, but an easy drive to Cottonwood, Sedona, Jerome.
We had a lovely visit at the Mescal Canyon Retreat. Truly the "end of the road" in the best of ways. Secluded and quiet in a gorgeous setting, but with close and easy access to town and the area. Andrea and Rennie were gracious, unobtrusive hosts and Bobbie's breakfasts were amazing! Thank you so much!
We are a 69 yo couple who came to Mescal Canyon Retreat on our daughter's advice after she and her partner had spent a pleasant weekend at this lovely organic farm and studio. Certainly the components were there for a restful and renewing stay--lovely grounds and gardens, organic farm and vineyards, the wonderful stone buildings and "off the grid" technology, hot tub, stargazing, dream catchers, Tibetan prayer rugs, Buddhas and prayerful St Francis statues, delicious breakfast in the beautiful house, and hiking offered in the canyon on the property, which we had hoped to take advantage if after breakfast before we left.
In booking the room, I had asked about the possibility of early morning coffee, and Rennie had offered to set my husband up with "his own French press and hot water, despite the early hour". This commitment was not honored and my husband ended up driving the few miles to town for coffee at 7am, which was not a big deal but perhaps portended what was to come.
Unfortunately this renewing environment turned toxic later in the morning when the host blindsided my daughter and her partner with an aggressive and intimidating verbal attack and our group no longer felt safe in this home. The issue had to do with some mulch disturbed when the resident dogs were playing with my daughter's dog. Rennie asserted it took him "10 minutes" to resettle the mulch. There was also some accusations of poop that had been missed, and which my daughter did clean up, although the amount of poop she ended up cleaning was more than her dog normally produces in a week. These seemed like small infractions to produce such a barrage of verbal abuse, and issues that could have been resolved more calmly.
In the end we needed to shake the dirt of this supposedly spiritual place from our sandals and move on.
We ended up with a lovely hike in Sedona
In a subsequent email exchange, This host assures me he has "never" had a problem interacting with guests in the past, so possibly this was just a really off day. He did finally apologize for a "misunderstanding", but not for his hostile behavior, which he felt was warranted because his home had been "disrespected".
Being new to Airbnb I feel awkward in posting a negative review, and fully expect to receive one in return. This was a bad experience in a very beautiful place.
