The Space

Welcome to our home! We live on a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom floating home and are lucky enough to be able to offer occasional space to travelers.

We are a child-friendly household with (mostly well-behaved) children ranging from toddler to teen, so it's best if you don't mind kids and the various noises they make. Your room is quite quiet though, and we will try to minimize the toddler drumming while you're sleeping! Since we are living here with our kids, please take the time to introduce yourself when requesting a booking, as I will only rent to travelers I feel good about inviting into our home.

This room has a comfortable twin-sized bed with a memory foam mattress and down duvet, an armchair with reading light, and a desk and work chair. I've priced it to be reasonable for a single traveller, and it is definitely most comfortable for one person.

When you're staying here you can relax on our patio and explore the famous houseboat docks. You can walk to a variety of restaurants and there is a nearby grocery store.

Guest Access

You are welcome to use our washing machine/dryer and/or prepare yourself a meal in our kitchen. In the evening we are often watching tv or playing a game and you are always welcome to join in. The other bedrooms are privately occupied, but otherwise the home is open for you to share.

Interaction with Guests

We live here with our children, so you will be in the mix with our family. We are happy to leave you to yourself if you would prefer privacy in your room, or feel free to join us in the evening to have a drink or watch a tv show.

I don't provide a formal breakfast, but you can help yourself to whatever we have on hand (usually cereal, toast, etc), and I can recommend some excellent breakfast restaurants, including the cafe at the end of our parking lot that offers $5 bacon and eggs.

The Neighborhood

The Sausalito floating home community is really unique and beautiful. We love that we have a world-class bike/running trail right at the top of our dock, that decent food is a short walk away and really excellent food is not much further. I love seeing the water when the tide is high and the variety of feeding birds when the tide is out. Before I moved here, I didn't realize that even the mud at low tide could be beautiful, but it really is like living in a nature sanctuary.

The peacefulness of nature is balanced by the proximity of the highway - if you are on the back deck and look in one direction, you wouldn't think a car existed in the world. Look the other way and see the activity of a winding road.

While you're here you should walk the docks to see all the variety of the floating homes. You should check out downtown Sausalito - just a short drive or a long walk away. You could go for a run or bike ride, and you should definitely take the world-class ferry-ride across San Francisco Bay to the city. If you feel like driving north, wine country is less than an hour away. Many people travel here specifically to see the redwood forests at Muir Woods. And the beaches offer great sunning and boogie boarding in summer.

Getting around

There is public transportation a short walk from our house, and I'm happy to help with sorting out the bus system. We are also less than a mile from the SFO Airporter shuttle drop-off. It's definitely easiest to get around with a car, but with a little determination and research, public transit can work quite well also.

There is free parking for our dock.

Other Things to Note

• This is a floating home, and you need to be able to traverse a dock, gangplank and stairs to get back and forth.

• Please note - some of my reviews mention breakfast - for the time being I have lowered the price of the room and am not offering formal breakfast service - so please don't be disappointed!

We love our unique houseboat lifestyle, and are excited to share it with travelers. If you're a tourist, we're happy to help you find the best way for you to discover the area. If you're here on business, we have fast wireless internet, iron, blow-dryer - probably whatever you need to keep yourself professional.

  • My experience at the houseboat of Genia and Christine Samson was great! The room was clean, has a very comfortable bed, and Christine and Genia are extremely friendly and helpful hosts. The children are respectful and the toddler, an absolute charmer! It was a good experience of a happy family in a most unusual floating homes neighborhood of unique architectural styles along a dock of the San Francisco Bay! Just the best time! I'll be back!

  • This is a very cozy houseboat with a wonderful deck outside. Sat outside at night and watched the stars in the sky, and got up early and watched the sun rise over the bay, very peaceful. The bed was very comfortable and cozy and Christine was very kind.

  • Wonderful family and great place to stay. They were very welcoming, the location was great and although I had to run before breakfast, it looked lovely.

I was able to get an amazing run right from the front of their house, so if you like being out and about you should def. stay here.

  • Loved my stay!!! Genia,Christine and their family are wonderful host! They are very welcoming and make you feel home. The place is very original, quite, peaceful and the view is amazing. Stqying on a house boat is a unique experience. If visiting SF, it is very close to the city (by car or by ferry). It is also very close to Muir woods, if you like to have a walk. The room is very comfortable and breakfast is generous and delicious! You can even get your coffee, tea or hot choc in your room if you want! Genia and Christine houseboat is the ideal place for a relaxing stay when visiting SF area. If I ever go back to SF I will for sure stay with them again. I highly recommend a stay at Genia and Christine.

About
Expats Afloat: Genia immigrated from Russia as a child and grew up in New York before moving to California. He speaks fluent Russian. Christine is originally from Canada and wishes her French was better. Both have been active in the arts - Genia as a musician, and Christine as an actor/theatre educator, but both currently make their living as software developers. They share their floating home with a tribe of children, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years, although probably only two or three of them will be around when AirBnB guests are over.
