During your stay, this is your apartment, your base. Your hosts, Damon and Kristen, we live on the other side of the double - separate apartments entirely, separate entrances - we only share the front porch. We're busy folks, there's often friends and colleagues coming and going, and we're generally pretty friendly and chatty - tho' it's your choice how much or little we all interact.
This is a diverse, friendly, safe, active neighborhood. Folks say "hello" and are willing to chat. All ages - on our block are three couples with small children, two retired couples, and the whole range in between. While the neighborhood seems almost entirely residential, within a few square blocks are a traditional, well-beloved little 24-hour corner grocery, four neighborhood bars - three with notable live music - and of course, four restaurants serving a variety of menus - all popular with locals as well as visitors. In the evening, from the front porch, you might hear the faint sounds of live brassy jazz from a corner club, a neighbor practicing the sax or banjo, foghorns from freighters on the Mississippi River two blocks away, trains that serve the port and docks rumbling by, and tree frogs serenading each other. In the afternoons, a neighborhood vegetable vendor, Mr. Okra, makes his rounds slowly, calling out in his sing-song voice, "I have onions and bananas, I have eatin' pears and apples!" In the lead-up to the Mardi Gras season, the neighborhood junior high school marching band gets prepared for their upcoming parades by practicing on the surrounding streets. Add it all up, and it's a good spot to soak up some of what makes New Orleans the wonderful place that it is.
Easy, easy walk-or-bike-ride to Marigny, Frenchman Street, the French Quarter, and parts of New Orleans onward. There is a bus-stop at the corner for the Marigny-Bywater line (runs 7am 'til 6pm) and another 4 blocks away for the St. Claude line (runs 7am 'til 1am) - both connect with streetcar lines for St. Charles, Canal St., and the Riverfront. Easy on-street parking is always available in front of the house or close nearby.
There's a very mellow kitty who lives on our front porch, Baby Jee. Tho' not allowed inside the apartments, Baby Jee may ask to come in, she is usually very polite and easily accepts "no" as an answer.
Your hosts, Damon and Kristen, live next door to your apartment, and we're happy to address any concerns as well as give pointers and assistance that can make your visit to New Orleans more enjoyable.
My two best friends and I live far away from each other and try to do a girls trip once a year. We decided to come to New Orleans and picked to stay with Damon and Kristen. Upon arrival, Damon helped me with parallel parking (I am terrible at it) and was very welcoming. The place was clean, organized, and very comfy/homey. Kiddie corner from the place is a 24 Hour small grocery store and a bar. It takes about 7 mins to drive to the french quarter (mainly due to the extreme amount of one-ways) and about a 11$ cab ride from Bourbon Street. Damon and Kristen were great to talk to and I wish that we could of spent more time but we had a pretty full schedule. They are kind, genuine people who will help with any of your needs. I have no complaints about the place and would love to go back there again.
We had a wonderful time at Bywater apartment even it was rainy. Great host with a heart, great apartment, highly recommended! Thank you again hosting us!
Kristen and Damon were the best hosts! The house was comfy with everything we needed in the coolest part of town. The best food was walking distance, and we felt like locals by the end of or stay.
The house is a nice walk to Frenchman Street and the quarter. The Joint has the best BBQ and is one block away. Breakfast at Elizabeths was amazing. We also checked out local folk artist, Dr. Bob's studio.
Every recommendation our hosts gave us was brilliant. We really enjoyed all the evening chats and porch sitting. If you want an authentic New Orleans vacation, stay with Damon and Kristen.
We wish we could give this place a million stars. What an amazing New Orleans experience. The space is comfortable and feels like home. In the morning, I made use of the front porch -- peaceful, yet full of life and activity, and in the heat of the afternoon, we made use of the screened back porch (complete with table, chairs and ceiling fan), listening to birds and the sounds of Bywater.
Damien and Kristen were exceptional hosts, giving us a rundown of various happenings around town and the amazing Bywater neighborhood (PLEASE LET US COME MOVE THERE), and would sit and talk with us forever.
It's about a 25-minute walk to the Quarter, but the walk is great, and very safe. We did it at all times of day, and people will give you a friendly hello no matter what time you encounter them in the streets or on their stoops.
I wish I could tell you not to stay here so that next time we want to head to NOLA, we'll be sure to get the spot we want. But really, go. It'll treat you right, and be unforgettable.
We stayed at Damon and Kristen's place for 10 days over April with our 4 year old son. We arrived after midnight after a long flight from the UK, including a delay in Dallas, and Damon met us, cooked us some delicious boudin and left us some cold beers - what a warm welcome!
The place is very clean and comfortable with all mod cons including Wi-Fi. There's a 24 hour shop opposite and several great places to eat within walking distance (try the Joint, Elizabeth's and Satsuma Café). The number 5 bus leaves from the corner right through the French Quarter to Canal Street. This is really convenient but we found the bus to be pretty unreliable so we walked most mornings. It took us about half an hour into the French Quarter (you could do it much quicker if you aren't with a small child!) and a walk along Royal, Dauphine or Chartres was great for interesting places and people watching. At night a cab back was never more than about 10 dollars and we enjoyed sitting on the porch chatting with our hosts and the neighbours.
It was great staying in Bywater as we got to see a huge part of N.O. we would have missed if we'd stayed in a more touristy area. We would definitely stay again if we return to New Orleans and we recommend it wholeheartedly!
We very much enjoyed our stay at Damon and Kristen's place in the Bywater. The apartment was super clean, the bed comfortable, lots of fluffy towels, and Damon was kind enough to have a couple cold, local beers waiting for us when we arrived. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch with the kitty, Baby Jee, when the weather was nice. Walking distance to several restaurants and bars in the area. Highly recommend staying here.
We had the best time staying here with Damon and Kristen as our hosts! The space is amazing (email hidden) to stay. Super chill atmosphere made for the most relaxing time. Definitely plan on returning in the future!
I had the most incredible stay with Damon and Kristen! They were so hospitable and kind. This was by far my best AirBnB experience. Their house is very warm and welcoming with snacks and cooking supplies. Kristen gave us lots of advice on where to go and how to get around and her tips were instrumental in making our trip a success! The neighborhood is excellent and offers an "off the beaten path" view of New Orleans. It is also a nice escape from the bustling touristy areas. I could not give higher praises of our stay with Kristen and Damon. Thanks Kristen and Damon!
Damon and Kristen were fantastic! We loved the place. Convienently located in the bywater next to yummy places to eat, late late late night spots to drink, and a mini mart for all your feed needs. We brought our bikes which made other parts of town super accessible. Damon and Kristen had great suggestions and even hooked us up with some costumes. Great people with a great spot.
Four of us just enjoyed a fun week in New Orleans and were so pleased with our accommodations at Heart of the Bywater. We could not have asked for better hosts than Kristin & Damon. Damon greeted us warmly upon arrival, gave us a tour of the flat, a brief rundown of the local culture, and tuned us in to WWOZ-local radio that kept us abreast on all live music and other goings-on in NOLA during our stay. The fridge was stocked with cool drinks and snacks and lovely Kristen treated us to some fresh local fruit. The kitchen had everything we needed and there were plenty of towels and linens for 4 of us. This location is so convenient to many attractions and we enjoyed riding our bikes to the French Quarter and exploring the local neighborhood. So close, we walked to The Joint for fabulous barbecue, Elizabeth's for Shrimp and Grits and Praline Bacon, and had a great time groovin' to live funk over at Vaughn's on Thursday night. Kristen and Damon are so knowledgeable about everything that's happening in New Orleans and more than happy to advise. We felt right at home from the start, very safe in this neighborhood and comfortable in this roomy, cute and clean house. Very pleased. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks again for your warm, New Orleans hospitality.
