The Space

Bright, cozy and private suite with private entrance, near 'Upcountry' cowboy town of Makawao. Queen-sized bed, kitchen, a covered and partially enclosed Lanai, set up for dining or relaxing to watch a Maui Sunset from the porch swing. Full bathroom, TV, DVD & VCR players and high speed Internet connection. Within walking distance of Makawao Town's variety of restaurants, including live music and dancing at Casanova's plus charming boutiques and art galleries. Nearby Piiholo Ranch has mountainside horseback rides with panoramic view of the Valley Isle. Easy access to the road to Hana or 15 minutes from the beach town of Paia with numerous shops, restaurants and the best surfing and windsurfing beaches on Maui. The winding road to the top of Haleakala Crater is 5 minutes away! Your hosts live upstairs and, in addition to the warmth of 'Aloha' we offer seasonal fruits and veggies from our garden, lots of helpful suggestions on places to visit and how to get there.

Guest Access

There are laundry facilities available for guests who stay for 2 weeks or more. Because we are on catchment water, we are ever mindful of water usage and encourage our guests to do the same.

Interaction with Guests

We live upstairs, and we always take our cues from our guests regarding the level of interaction desired. We are happy to give suggestions on the places to see and things to do on Maui.

The Neighborhood

It is within easy walking distance of Makawao town. Makawao is a historic site, with only one stop sign (no stop lights!) great restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. Our house is at the end of a dead-end street, so traffic is non-existent, except for neighbors coming and going from their homes.

Getting around

There is public transportation available, with the bus stop located within 3 blocks. Parking space is provided with the rental.

Other Things to Note

We are on a catchment water system, which means that all of our water is 'caught' from the rain running off of our roof into holding tanks. We love this close connection to nature and we encourage awareness of water usage habits. The island must produce and generate its own water supply, and Maui has often experienced periods of drought.

  • After four years we returned to paradise Hawaii again. And Pamela & Russ made our first week on Maui so comfortable and enjoyable with their beautiful space. Their space has a wonderful spacious room as well as a spacious lanai (pattio, terrace) where we enjoyed having breakfast or we were just sitting and relaxing after returning from a trip.

Makawao is a great little town from where they have cafés and galleries. Makawao is a very good location to explore upcountry, Haleakala National Park and places like Paia and Haiku. Even Kahului is close.

Pamela & Russ helped us with their advice whenever we had a question. Thank you so much for kind way of taking care of us!

  • Our stay at the Dyson property was wonderful. It was everything we needed for a 5-night stay. It was very clean and private and our hosts were wonderful. It was just the right distance from town for a leisurely walk. We would definitely stay again. Mahalo for your hospitality.

  • For our first trip to Maui, this was the absolutely perfect place to stay. Makawao is a lovely little hamlet amid green (green, green, in February green!) rolling hills, and Pam's studio apartment was a well-appointed and peaceful place to return to after a hard day of adventuring. The complete kitchen is great if you want to make the pilgrimage from plane to car rental to Kahului Costco and then dine on rotisserie chicken, Dole pineapples, and deliciously unidentifiable fruits from the many roadside stands. Or just hang out on the lanai and enjoy the sunshine and pretty view. We were able to spend one day on the Road to Hana, one day snorkeling out of Lahaina, and one day starting at the top of Haleakalā crater for sunrise and ending on Ho'okipa Beach (with a stop for white chocolate macadamia nut pancakes at Kula Bistro in between). If Whalers Village and the Kāʻanapali resorts are not your cup of tea, this is definitely the best way to see all of Maui! Pam is cheery and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed our little getaway.

  • Had a really warm welcome from Pam and Russ, even though we arrived from Vancouver around midnight! The studio apartment was spotlessly clean and very well equipped, and well situated for Makawao town and the coast. The garden was well cared for and very relaxing and we would happily book again. Be aware that airb&b do not include the tax of about 13% which must be paid in cash on arrival, so budget accordingly.

  • We loved staying At Pam and Russ's place. We have a one year old who is very activity and it was great to be able to let him run around the garden. He loved the chickens and vege garden. The studio is very spacious, clean and light with a large covered verandah over looking the garden. Everything was there for us and Russ and Pam where helpful but unintrusive. We were previously staying in Lahina by the beach and want to explore the other side of the island so their place in Makawao was perfect. Paia is 10mins away great for shopping and beaches. We loved the coffee at Makawao's Cassonova's before setting off each day. Thanks Pam and Russ... we will be back.

  • Great place for visiting up country of Maui. The apartment is perfect even for 3 and we loved everything. Garden and terrace are relaxing after a day hiking and visiing. Pamela and Russ are nice and quiet and we would have loved to spend more time with them but we were out all day and they had their own activities.
If you are looking for a cozy and quiet place in the countryside this the right place and go there.

  • We tremendously enjoyed our stay at the “Country Living on Maui”. Pam and Russ were great hosts and the studio was very nice, clean, functional, peaceful, and very well located. Pam and Russ even invited us to a holiday gathering/dinner together with their family and friends, which was very special and greatly appreciated. By the way, Pam and Russ are amazing cooks! In all, if we are ever on Maui again, we would definitely consider staying at their wonderful home.

  • This was our first airbnb stay and it was very wonderful. Pam and Russ obviously put a lot of thought into making their guests comfortable, and have a home atmosphere. There is separate space but they are very accessible and friendly. They responded quickly to our inquiries while we were in the planning stages of our trip. Highly recommended!

  • The studio is a comfortable and perfect accomodation. Our hosts Pam and Russ were very helpful in our touristic enterprises. Perhaps only 15 min. to the beaches, so f. e. the famous one in Paia. Very central and for us the best place to start to Haleakala or the way to Hana. And – in the night it is not so hot. The near surrounding is a safe neighbourhood and the old town of Makawao with its amazing shops and restaurants are great. Five stars for Pam and Russ.

  • We had a really great time at country living on Maui. Pam and Russ were great hosts who can really help guests enjoy the spirit of Maui. As travelers its easy to go and try to "conquer" the island, but we were really able to relax and enjoy our trip and stay as well as spend a nice chunk of time in a beautiful part of the island that was reasonably close to anything we could've wanted to be doing.
