The Space

The bungalow is a 200 square foot self-contained cabin, with a shower, and a queen size memory foam bed. The kitchenette has a frig and microwave.

The deck has a nice view of the pacific ocean. A good place to relax after a day of hiking. The neighborhood is pretty quiet, punctuated by occasional crowing rooster or barking dog

We are walking distance from downtown Makawao, with a number of interesting shops and restaurants. Makawao is about 20 minutes from the airport, on the side of the Haleakala. It is a good place to get a head start for the Haleakala Crater or a trip to Hana.

We are in a rural neighborhood which many people seem to prefer over living in the heavily touristed areas. A major advantage is that our weather is more temperate because of our elevation, and air conditioning is never required Driving to the beaches of Kihei takes about 40 minutes from here.

Wi-Fi is available in the unit, as well as a coin operated washer and a free dryer. I live next door, and hopefully I can provide anything that you're missing.

  • This was the first time we had visited Maui, Hawaii and our accommodation was perfect. We stayed in a part of Maui referred to as upcountry and while it wasn't on the beach, it is in a more convenient location for travelling around the island. It was easy to visit Haleakala crater, hop on the road to Hana, see a luau at Lahaina, get the ferry to Lanai and snorkel in a place called "turtle town". Karl was very gracious and left a lovely Maui Gold pineapple for us, as well as some juice in the fridge. While the room doesn't have a full kitchen, we could still prepare breakfast, pack a lunch and on the odd occasion, eat dinner in the room. There is a small table for two, a bar-sized fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. It was a little odd not having a sink in the bathroom and having to use the kitchen sink but certainly not a deterrent. The solar-heated water was plentiful once it arrived from the front of the property and the room was clean and tidy. If you want to see Maui, and not just stay on the beach, I would suggest you check out Karl's place.

  • It's a nice little cottage behind the main house in a quiet street. Makawao is a great place to stay, if you want to discover all parts of Maui, because it's near the Road to Hana, the Beaches in the south and the Haleakala Summit!
We fully enjoyed our 4 night stay at Karl's cottage and he is a very nice host. We can absolutly recommend the bungalow to other guests.

  • Staying at the bungalow was a great experience I was able to go to the top of the mountain and do the road to hana and have a quiet comfortable place to relax and sleep in the best way to spend my time in maui

  • It was a sweet place, and Karl was a good guy. I'm kind of a fussy traveler, and it was a comfortable place to stay and a good value for the money. I appreciated that it was quiet, had nice vegetation around it, and was close to, but not in the center of Makawao. Flowers and a fresh pineapple were a nice touch.
I was glad Karl was there to lead me to the place; I spent about 30 minutes looking for it and asking neighbors where it was. It's actually to the left of and behind the numbered house in front, and then around to the right once you get back there.

  • We had a really great time on Maui. Karl is really helpful and friendly. The bungalow is really pleasant and as advertised. It is clean, not too cool or too warm. Everythings works perfectly. The wifi is fast. We highly recommend staying there.

  • We stayed in Karl's bungalow for 5days and loved every minute of it. Karl was very welcoming and a great host, he let us borrow his bikes for a couple of days as we were using the bus service and walking and supplied us with some fresh fruit.
Karl respected our privacy and only popped round to make sure we were happy and had all we needed.
    Would recommend this to all.

  • This adorable studio was just what we wanted...a little cozy hideaway that's just off the main street...just minutes from great restaurant and bakery. More importantly, it was just a hop away from our family gathering in Pukalani and great location for starting out to Haleakala. Despite the occasional ulu dropping from the nearby tree and a tiny shower...I truly enjoyed this unit and would definitely recommend going back.

  • Karl's Bungalow is the perfect getaway. You are right near the town of Makawao, which has an amazing health food shop Rodeo, for all your food options. The Bungalow is nicely decorated, just right for a couple. Karl was a great host, he had contact with us the whole time and made sure we were comfortable. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Maui.

  • Karl was a friendly host and let us enter the bungalow hours before the check in hour and all was ready upon our arrival. The place is small but has everything needed, we only missed a sink in the bathroom and a better microwave. The location is good, near the start of Road to Hana and the road to Haleakala National Park. Good place to stay in Maui for the price. Recommended.

About
Still ticking along after all these years- going to work five days a week as a psychologist here in Maui. I like to go to India a couple of times a year, I think mainly just to appreciate more what we have in Maui. My major passion is playing bluegrass music with others, although I cool it when I am hosting folks at the house.
