Enjoy the youth culture in the theatrical performances, music, and secondhand goods shops. A town exactly like a toy box.
Shimokitazawa, commonly called "Shimokita," is on the western side of Tokyo, and although just a small town, it is very popular among young people. In questionnaire surveys about where young people want to live, Shimokitazawa is always one of the top three responses. This is because there are many small theater halls, live houses, bars and secondhand record shops, and this town is known as a trendsetting place for youth culture. With its many narrow alleys that are inaccessible to vehicles, you are given a real sense of adventure while exploring the town on foot, which is a real joy in and of itself.
When it comes to shopping, secondhand clothes shops and shops offering miscellaneous items from the 70s and old animation-themed toys are quite popular. The number of large-scale shops in the area has been increasing, but the nicest feature of this town is the many shops expressing the ingenuity of their young owners, such as those combining a cafe and a record shop or an outlet for small handmade items.

Wakana helped out, not just with a lovely apartment close the train station, but also with some great info on the area. Would highly recommend this place for someone staying in Tokyo that wants some cool restaurants, cool bars, but not the high rise hecticness!
Communication was great and she was super flexible in us leaving our luggage on our last day.
Wakana was very informative, communicated clearly and timely and was super helpful. We felt welcomed and happy in the space. While the apartment is quite small, it had everything we needed (the kitchen isn't something most people would cook in, but preparing coffee or a snack would be OK). It's bigger than most Tokyo hotel rooms and is a good value. Location is very good and was easy to access from the train station, close to great dining and shopping, too. The bathroom is quite small and my tall husband was a bit cramped, but that's not too unusual for Japan and wasn't a problem. Just be prepared for smaller spaces. It's a great base for exploring trendy Shimokitazawa and an easy train ride into Tokyo (only a couple of stops to Shibuya). This apartment is a great option for people who plan to be out exploring a lot and need a clean, cozy place to crash at the end of a busy day.
We had a great 4-night stay at Wakana's apartment! It's a convenient and funky neighbourhood to base ourselves in and we thoroughly enjoyed staying here. The apartment had everything we needed and although it was a little bit of a squeeze to use the bathroom (the husband is 6'4 and I'm almost 6 foot), it still worked fine.
Communication with Wakana has been excellent and her instructions on how to get to the apartment were very helpful. Also her Tokyo tips were very great. We recommend staying in this apartment and this neighbourhood - so many good places to eat & explore!
Wakana's apartment is lovely, and the description and photos are spot on. Shimokitazawa is such a great area - well connected to Shibuya but with a more laid back vibe. Wakana was a very accommodating and thoughtful host, and we loved the pocket wifi and comfy bed. Would definitely stay again next time I'm in Tokyo!
Pros: excellent location, directions from Wakana made it easy to find- very close to station (even express trains stop in Shimokita). Clean apartment with good size bed and couch. Washing machine was very handy! Kitchen and bathroom had good basics (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, body wash, tea, cooking oil, salt, pepper, bottled water). Wakana provided a great list of local food, drink and shopping tips. Wifi provided had great signal.
Cons: no proper curtains. There were no blinds and the curtains were white material so we woke with the sun streaming in at 6am every morning which was hard in an area with so many great bars! This was a problem for us but might not bother others. No television or iPod dock.
Overall; would definitely recommend and stay again provided curtains or blinds were added.
Our first trip to Japan and it was great experience. Made even better with the location we chose to stay in and Wakana's apartment.
Wakana gave very detailed easy to follow instructions on how to get to the apartment. She also sent us some terrific notes re restaurants, bars and shopping in the area. The apartment itself is small but had everything we needed and a very comfy bed. Bathroom is tiny but we managed and who wants to spend time in there when on holiday anyway!!
The Shimokitazawa area is amazing and we highly recommend people stay here. Loads of restaurants, cafes, bars, clothing shops (new and 2nd hand) and my own favourite, record shops. It's only 4 minutes from Shibuya on the express and about 7 to Shinjuku. And a much more peaceful area to just wander the streets any time of day or night.
Wakana also provides a pocket wi-fi device which is a godsend! We could stay connected everywhere we went and having travelled to the US and Europe a lot where we've had to go searching for cafe's with wi-fi it was so great to have this.
Wakana also organised a cab to Shibuya station for us on check out as we had a lot of bags from all the shopping and didn't want to cram onto the local train. This was a great help.
We can't wait to get back to Tokyo and will definitely stay in Shimokita again, and at Wakana's place if it's available.
This was our second stay at Wakana's, and much like our first stay, it was a great. She still had useful supplies, like toiletries, washer, and the mobile wi-fi, as well as more guest instructions. The location is so central, and she gave us simple directions to find the place (not that we forgot!). If we ever come back, we'll definitely stay again!
