Our carefully-remodeled downstairs apartment has a gorgeous bathroom & kitchenette, big windows and a separate entrance that opens onto a shady side yard and sunny patio. It's on a quiet, leafy street a short walk from lots of great restaurants.

The space
This is a bright and cheerful, newly-remodeled basement apartment. With a separate entrance, 8' ceilings, hardwood floors, a gas fireplace, a Murphy bed, a nicely-appointed kitchenette, custom built-ins and a sparkling bathroom, it's the perfect place for a couple to visit Portland on a budget.

It opens up to a beautifully landscaped yard with plenty of trees and a vegetable garden. Adventurous guests can rent our bicycles through Spinlister and our car through Getaround.

The neighborhood is classic Portland: great for walking and biking, with three of the East Side's most popular, restaurant-rich commercial strips: Hawthorne, Belmont and Division.

With mature shade trees and new insulation throughout, our entire house stays cool even on the hottest days -- especially the basement. The back yard has a bike garage, a play house, a gas barbecue, a stone patio and a veggie garden.

This basement apartment on a quiet, family-oriented, tree-lined street sits between and is just a few blocks from two of SE Portland's most vibrant commercial strips: Hawthorne and Division. The property is a nicely-landscaped, shady oasis. We love our home, our street, our neighbors and our neighborhood, and we're pretty sure that you will, too.

Where you’ll be

Portland, Oregon, United States

Our neighborhood is quiet, friendly and full of kids. We have an oversized lot and an outdoor play house, and we're a block from Sewallcrest Park, which has a big play structure, a basketball court and playing fields.

Our house is 2-3 blocks from SE Hawthorne Boulevard, with restaurants including Farmouse (Thai) Tarboush (Lebanese), Cafe Castagna, Bread & Ink, Hot Lips Pizza, Two Doors Down, Porque No? (Mexican), Lardo (Pork!), Apizza Scholls, Cha Cha Cha (Mexican), Grand Central Baking, Jam on Hawthorne, Blue Star Donuts, The Waffle Window, Little Big Burger and (about a mile toward downtown...) Burgerville, which is a pretty solid local fast food chain.

And there's more...

A 10-minute walk south (the opposite direction from Hawthorne) and you'll find SE Division Street, with Pok Pok (Thai), Ava Gene's, Cibo (Italian), Xico (Haute Mexican), Pizza Maria, St. Honore Bakery, Sunshine Tavern, The American Local, the Richmond Bar, SE Wine Collective, Bollywood Theater (Indian) and Salt & Straw Ice Cream.

People come to Southeast Portland from all over the city to eat. You can walk to most of these places if you want to avoid hunting for a parking space, and work off some calories. You won't go hungry around here…!

I'm a married father of two teen-aged girls, I work in transportation electrification, I’m a youth soccer coach, an outdoor enthusiast and an avid reader. I have lived primarily in the Portland area since I was 8 years old, but I have also lived in and/or traveled in North America, Europe and Asia. My favorite pastimes involve my family and good Italian food, a drizzly fall day playing soccer at the local park, or a second cup of coffee and a good novel.

During your stay

My family is around most weekends and after school/work. We try to be quiet early in the morning, but guests should be forewarned that the apartment isn't completely soundproof, and you'll likely hear us once we're up and about.

My wife and I both work, but I'm often available if you need anything, and you can always text me at (phone number hidden). I sometimes need to access a storage area toward the back of the unit (ie behind the laundry room), but I'll always knock and ask before coming down.

My daughters speak Japanese fluently. I speak German, my wife and I speak halting Italian, my wife speaks a bit of French and I studied and can still say a few lines of Mandarin. We especially enjoy hosting guests from other countries.
