  • We had a great time at the Ohana Tropicana Island Guesthouse. It was a wonderful stay. Le'A was great. She left the key in the door and we were able to move right in after arriving. It's perfect for two people. We met Le'A that first evening and she went over all the basic things we would need to know. She gave us some suggestions on places to see and eat which were helpful.

We tend to be pretty independent and self-reliant travelers, so we actually didn't see her after that first night and left the key in the door when we left.

We stayed for six nights. The kitchen was fully stocked with plates, cooking gear etc. The shower was wonderful and we appreciated the warm water in the morning and the soft bed at night.
We were in walking distance of the black beach which we took advantage of several times.

If you are looking for an alternative to a busy resort kind of location on the Big Island you should consider this. Very peaceful, very quiet. You'll love it!

  • Our stay at Ohana Tropicana was everything we hoped it would be. Le'A was a great host. She brought us fresh fruit from the garden, supplied us with tons of helpful hints about the Puna area, and showed us the local farmers' market. The house was a great honeymoon escape. The lanai was shady and breezy, the bed was super comfortable, and the outdoor shower was the highlight of every morning. The garden is clothing optional and very private, which means you can feel comfortable lounging on the lanai in whatever suits you. We had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook for ourselves, which is important as there aren't a lot of dining options along the Red Road. I recommend Ohana Tropicana as a great stepping off point for exploring the Puna Region by car and on foot (Kehena Beach is just a short walk away). Le'A's local knowledge is important as many the great spots are not well sign posted.

Natural Wonder Vacation Therapy
I love natural beauty, connection with all of the elements, air, water, earth and fire, and they are all very vital here. Self care is key, nurturing yourself. Community is also very important and there is a lot of that available here in Puna, dance, music, outdoor activities, farmer's markets and other land based gatherings. And I love to balance the social life with being alone. Swimming in the ocean is like medicine for the spirit. Making offerings and experiencing the lava flow is incredibly dynamic and intense. This is a magical place and I am grateful to be on this island. I am honored to share this small sanctuary with those who are drawn to be here, too.
