The Space

If you are coming to Montreal for a weekend or a month, I have the perfect place for you to call home, located in Montreal's most coveted and coolest neighbourhood, Mile End/Outremont.

The room is large and peaceful with a queen-sized bed and soft, cotton sheets, bath towels, and a computer desk and chair. The apartment is located on a quiet, leafy Outremont street facing a classic French-Catholic church.

There is a famous patisserie just a few doors down where you can get your morning bread, croissants, and cafe-au-lait. And the neighborhood is dotted with amazing cafés, restos, boutiques, parks, and of course, the world famous bagel shops.

The mountain is a short stroll away, and downtown, McGill U., and the U. de Mtl are all just 10 minutes away. There is free street parking right out front, and a Bixi (the public bicycle sharing system) stand right around the corner.

The apartment itself is a large beautiful space with hardwood floors throughout, a washer and dryer, wifi, HD tv, fully-equipped kitchen, and two porches (front and back) where you can sip your morning coffee or evening wine.

Your host, Randy, works in Montreal media, and as such is a perfect resource for all that's happening in town: concerts, shows, events, or just cool spots to hang out. If you need a recommendation on the best brunches, dinners, bars, or clothing stores, I'm your guy.

Mile End/Outremont is, by far, Montreal's finest "quartier" with amazing cafés, parks, shops, and a wide variety of restaurants. The opulence and leafy beauty of Outremont right beside the funkiness and creative vibe of Mile End.

  • As advertised, the room was large, comfy, quite and private! I stayed with Randall for a week and was quite comfortable in his home. He was very helpful with providing suggestions on things in the area that might be of interest. The apartment is in a great neighborhood, on a quiet street that is very close to commercial corridors with shops and restaurants.

  • I had a great time at Randall's place!
The apt. is very clean, has all the furnishings/appliances I
hoped for and Randall was in general a great host.
I would recommend it to any friend without hesitation.

  • I had a great stay with Randy! The apartment is very nice; clean, comfortable, and well laid out for two people to share. The neighborhood is also beautiful with lots to do.

Randy and I were both out of the house a bunch for the five days I stayed there, but the few times we did see each other we had a nice time chatting and he was a very welcoming host who was happy to offer recommendations for exploring Montreal. All of which paid off. I would definitely recommend staying here.

  • The apartment in itself and the location are great. The room free space is minimal but ok. I didn't enjoy sharing an apartment with the host though. He is an older guy who spent most of his time at home watching tv or working from home....I am originally from Montreal and I was out of the house almost every night for dinner. I was mostly staying in my room when I was at home because the host attitude with the common space didn't make me feel that much welcome.

For example, I was working during the day time and it was important for me to get some quiet time at night but he was always using the living room (which is adjacent to the room) watching tv really loudly! Even when I asked him to lower the sound, he would get annoyed and reply things like "why?" (and it was almost midnight on a weekday!)

Overall, living with the host in that case was a really bad experience. I was thinking about moving out earlier but since I had already paid for the room for the month I decided to stay. I didn't feel comfortable most of the time and I am glad I am not staying there anymore ! I would recommend you to find a different place in the same area.

    Response from Randall:

There are some people who would be best suited to renting their own hotel room instead of "sharing" a space. This was such a case. First of all, I work 5 days a week, including weekends when she had the place to herself. When home, I am usually ensconced in my office at the other end of the apartment working on my computer. She had full reign of the place; I even showed her how to rent films off of the Apple TV, but she declined. She seemed to prefer to remain in her room with the door closed. Her prerogative, but it seemed very unfriendly.

As for the tv, the living room is not "adjacent" to the guest room. They are separated by a kitchen. I sometimes watch The Daily Show at the end of the evening, and I invited her to join me, but she refused (saying she'd never heard of it -- very odd). The tv is NEVER loud (I have upstairs neighbours), and NEVER if the guest is in bed. In fact, the question "why" was in fact "why, are you going to bed now?" To which she replied "no, but I can hear it in my room." To which I turned it down to the point where I couldn't even hear it, and then gave up, and turned it off. She even complained once when I was watching a You Tube video on my computer at the other end of the apartment. I was afraid to turn on the radio when cooking in the kitchen lest she'd complain. Even before booking the room, she complained about the price and I gave her a cheaper rate. Then she invited a friend to stay but never paid the supplemental rate. She stayed for over a month, but had she expressed her desires to leave earlier, I would have happily rebated her the difference, just for the serenity of not feeling like an unwanted guest in my own home. Live and learn, I guess.

I adore traveling and discovering the hidden character of a city. I also love helping others discover the secret magic of life in Montreal. Cafés, restos, pubs, parks, concerts, events, galleries, activities -- I know this town inside out. And as a member of Montreal's media world, I have an inside track to all the best events, and would love the chance to help you discover Montreal.
