  • The apartment is perfect for a comfortable stay in the mountains. It has everything you need to enjoy the surrounding area. Even more, though, the location is phenomenal, with striking views and close to wonderful hikes. We felt welcomed in the apartment and the town. I highly recommend staying here.

  • Vidal was very helpful on email by suggesting gorgeous beaches, places to hire bikes and good hiking routes. By the time we arrived at the Picos we had a really good idea of how best to spend the short time we had! :-)

The drive from Santandar airport is about 2 hours and well signposted for anyone hiring a car. Driving to Sotres was easy, the roads did start to get quite steep just before arriving which a normal car will be fine for (no need for 4x4). A few people have mentioned the narrow road up to the house. This isn't too much of a problem but when we arrived we did find no spaces to park outside the house. This isn't a problem as there is a small car park lower down in the town or a larger one to the north. Both are within a 3 minute walk to the house.

The house itself is cozy. Everything you will need to cook is available, and even firewood to start a fire. We left a lighter behind to get you started!! :-) There were only 2 of us staying but the house could easily accommodate 4-5 possibly 6 at a push. Watch your head on the low beams! :-) Plenty of blankets on the bed so don't worry about getting cold.

If you're self catering then there is a small shop in the village, but I'd recommend going to a larger supermarket as you pass through Cabrales Arenas which is on the way to Sotres.

The Picos are very beautiful in May. We visited the Cares Gorge, the Glacial Lakes at Covadonga, and hiked around Sotres. I'd highly recommend all!

The walks we did were well signposted, so if sticking to a trail you won't need a map. However if venturing off then I'd recommend a GPS.

I bought the Walking in Picos de Europe from Sunflower Books. It was very detailed and great for finding walks surrounding Sotres.

Thanks for having us a Casa Pedro Vidal!!

  • The rendezvous with a very welcoming Vidal was completely problem-free and the house is delightful and spotlessly clean. Mind your head on some low beams! The house is peaceful and an ideal location for a variety of walking. Sit in the sun by the front door like the neighbours after the hike. The last 200m access by car can be tricky; if not confident maybe leave the car in the village main street and walk up. Our first visit to the Picos and Sotres, greatly enjoyed Casa Pedro, sure we'll be back one day. Muchas gracias Vidal!

  • We had a great time in Sotres, staying at Casa Pedro. Vidal was very helpful when we were planning our visit, and also while we were there, answering questions promptly via email - he lives elsewhere. The village is beautiful and perfectly situated if you want to walk the mountains. We fell in love with the place. Fifty metres down the road is the Restaurante Casa "La Gallega". There you will find Ana, great hospitality and some lovely wooden spoons made by 88-year-old Pedro, of Casa Pedro. He is Vidal's grandfather.

  • Location, location, location! We took walks around the area, including a 16km hike in the Picos de Europa, every day. The apartment's well equipped and we prepared several meals here (tip: If you're planning to cook, be sure to stock up on groceries before arriving in Sotres). The skylight in the bathroom/toilet was a nice touch.

Tip for drivers: If you're planning to drive to Sotres - the journey here is amazing, by the way - it might be easier to leave the car in the parking lot in the village centre and walk a few minutes up to the house as the roads are very narrow.

Stay in this house in the middle of the mountains is a true pleasure. The view is great. The house is fully furnished. Warm welcome from Vidal who had prepared everything to answer to our questions. The village of Sotres is very pretty and is a good start for trekking around.

  • This is a beautiful village high in the mountains of the Picos de Europa. The cottage is comfortable and has a really authentic feel. We didn't want to leave it at all. The village is beautiful with its tiny narrow and steep streets. There are a number of good places to eat here and you must try the specialties of the area. Fabada and Cabrito. Sortes is ideally located for those wanting to hike the Picos with a variety of different to pick up from the village.

The town of Arenas de Cabrales is a 30min drive down the mountain roads with stunning views around each corner. We fell in love with the area and this house.

Vidal was very helpful and I would highly recommend this to everyone. It was fabulous.

  • Casa Pedro is a gorgeous house surrounded by what must be some of the most spectacular countryside in the world. The view from the bedroom window is breathtaking. The village is idillic and locals are very welcoming. Our two boys loved the whole experience, especially the home delivered bread and the amazing walks through the mountains. We wish we had booked to stay longer than three days. Vidal was very friendly and gave us all the information we needed to enjoy this remarkable area.
