Great stay! The house is awesome with a cozy fireplace and a large kitchen. It is perfectly located in Sotres for hikes and great views over the mountains. Thanks again, Vidal, for being such a good host and letting us stay in your place. We'd love to come back any time!
Vidal was waiting for us in the lovely Casa. As we had some delay we have contacted Vidal to warn him. This was no issue. The stay up there in the mountains was wonderful. We have been lucky with the weather and have hiked 2 full days. It was pleasant to retrieve the casa in order to make a sweet diner with the available pots and pans. In the morning at 09h00, the baker delivered some nice bread just in front of the casa.
Vidal was very welcoming to us when we arrived (late - the roads up to Sotres are slow!). The house, which was his grandfather's, and which was built by his great great grandfather, is a perfect base for exploring the Picos. There are lots of great walks from the village, or close to the village. The house itself has been beautifully renovated and was comfortable and clean. We'd definitely like to return again, Vidal, to do some more walking in your beautiful mountains! Thank you. Hugh and Maggie
We spendt a really nice time at vidal's place. The house is really comfortable and the view of the mountain is gorgeous. Sotres is close to a lot of hiking trails that vidal helped us to find (lot of maps are available at the place). Be sure to stock your groceries before coming if you dont want to drive back to arenas de cabrales.
Sotres is a beautiful village, highly recommended location if you enjoy mountain walking. The house is a little difficult to find, but it's a small village and I guess most people have satnav these days. Parking is nearby in the main village car park. There was a little confusion over our arrival time, but this didn't detract from our experience.
The house was very clean and the kitchen very functionable. Lots of hot water and great views from the bedroom windows. I guess it could be pretty chilly outside of the summer time (due to the altitude). An open fire downstairs, I can't remember what heating was available upstairs.
Lots of cute cats just down the road, which our kids adored!
We had a lovely week staying in Casa Pedro. Vidal, the host, was very helpful, providing web links to walking routes near Sotres in advance of our stay and also details about how to get there. In the house itself there are also leaflets from the national park providing details of walking routes and also some guided walks. Additionally, Vidal was eager to assist in making arrival times convenient, co-ordinating with the guests prior to us to ensure we could both check-in/check-out at the time we wanted, with the house cleaned thoroughly between guests. Similarly neighbours to the house were very friendly and eager to answer any questions we had about the area (even with my very poor Spanish!).
The house is perfect for doing the walks Sortres - Tielve - Sotres (14.1km, easy walk); Sotres - Urriellu (PNPE PR 21 - 22km, 'medium' difficulty); Hoya del Techo - Hoya del Techo (PNPE 28 without doing the loop to Bejes 15.6km, easy walk) and a route along the river Duje to Refugio de áliva then looping back (19km, easy walk). Although there are several places with good food to eat at in Sotres, it was really nice to come back to the house and cook a meal in the well-equipped kitchen. The house is very comfortable and cosy, with super views from the upstairs windows or from sitting outside on the ground floor (for which Vidal has provided chairs). In summary - a wonderful host and a lovely, cosy house in a superb location.
