The Space

We are offering a private guest bedroom with a small annex for children, in our home. The guest bedroom has one queen bed, a bunkbed and a private bathroom. It is ideally situated for two adults and two children/youth.

If you are more than four, or are the adventurous type, we also have a 1956 El Rey Travel Trailer which is listed as an AirBnB option. You can read more about it at:
(it is closed from November - March/April, as we have to shut off the water and it can get a bit chilly). Please feel free to ask us about it through this airbnb link.

The price of the guestroom/services reflects and includes the 8% Deschutes County Transient Room Tax and the 1% Oregon Department of Revenue State Lodging Tax.

Our property is located in Tumalo, a small and rural community in Central Oregon. We call our property “GADSHILL FARM”, which was named after our great grandfather's (George Andrew Dunning) 19th century farm in southeastern Pennsylvania. We were very fortunate to inherit the “GADSHILL FARM” sign, made by GAD’s son.

Our nearly 20 acre property is ideally situated. It is far enough to be “out in the country”, yet close enough in to get to all the places you want to go.

We’re about 6 miles from Redmond, 8 miles from Bend and about 20 miles from Sisters. The closest store/coffee shop is in Tumalo, about 5-miles away.

We’re about 45-minutes from Mt Bachelor ski resort, about 1-hr from HooDoo and about 30-minutes from cross country ski/hiking trails.

Lastly, we’re about 1 mile from the infamous Peterson Rock Garden, a roadside architecture and geologic attraction, built by Rasmus Petersen in the 1930’s. The Peterson Rock Garden was recently listed as one of the “Most Endangered Places” on the Historic Preservation League of Oregon’s top ten list.

The roads around us are quite rural, making it ideal for bicycling. We are experienced bicyclists and can provide you with excellent information on bicycle rides in the area.

Along with our home, there are several other buildings on our property, including a second home (which we rent), a large shop/studio, hay barn, outbuildings and small cottage (currently in use).

There are horses and chickens on the property, as well as domestic animals. We have one sweet rescue dog (Percy) and five rescue cats. People that stay with us must enjoy pets. Ours are very friendly; you might find a cat on your lap as you are relaxing and reading your favorite book.

**Note: we do keep the guest bedroom animals free, so as to be respectful of guests who need a "pet-free" zone.

Our home is about 2,000 square feet and was constructed in 2004. It has a wrap around deck and lovely views of the mountains.

As we live in the house with the Airbnb guest room, we think it fair that you know a little about us:

•There are two adults, Shari and Andy. Shari is an Environmental Scientist and writer. She recently published a book about the family’s volunteering in Ecuador and Peru. She currently works for the Oregon DEQ.

•Andy is a Photographer and person-of-multiple trades. He published a photography book (Southern Exposures). He currently works at COSTCO in the photography department.

•We have two teenage girls. One attends Oregon State University in Corvallis. The other is a 7th grader at Cascades Academy of Central Oregon. We are also hosting a foreign exchange student from South Korea.

•We love to travel. In 2011-2012, we lived in Plasencia, Extremadura, Spain. Andy and Shari taught English and the girls attended Spanish public schools. We volunteered in Ecuador and Peru, spent weeks in Guatemala and Mexico and have traveled throughout much of the U.S.

•We love to play music and have a house full of instruments (piano, keyboard, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, violins, recorders, penny whistles and cigar box guitars)

•If you haven’t already guessed, we love animals. We try very, very hard to keep our house fur free, but…the fur often wins.

•We love being active. We hike, run, bike, canoe and ski. We love sharing our knowledge about Central Oregon and about anything else.

The Airbnb room consists of a large (master) bedroom with a queen bed. We have converted the large, walk-in closet into a sleeping area for children. The room has a private bathroom/shower.

*The room now has a private entrance.

The guest room is ideally situated for two adults and up to two children/youth. We often get requests for three or four adults, or multiple children. We can be accomodating, but we also want our guests to be comfortable. We do have another Airbnb option on our property. You can also read about our 1956 El Rey (airstream like) travel trailer.

Clean sheets/towels (if you stay for more than one night you have the option to keep your sheets and towels versus nightly laundering). If you stay for a week, we can make arrangements for you to use the washer and dryer.

•Continental breakfast, which includes:
o Coffee/tea/hot chocolate
o Milk, (or milk alternative if available), juice
o Some type of bread item and
o Fruit/yogurt

Breakfast is prepared and served in our home and is set up to be self-serve. We endeavor to have breakfast items on the table by 7:00 am. Earlier arrangements can be made.

•Local knowledge, use of guides and maps

*Shari has her Food Handler's Certificate

•Play structure
•Playing in the pond
•Pogo stick/Hula hoops
•Board games/puzzles/children’s books
•Possible use of campfire
•Possible use of the instruments

*NOTE: We have a 15 foot Grumman canoe, with paddles, life vests, and roof tie-downs for $25/day.

**A FINAL NOTE: We are open to having well behaved pets. We’re sorry, but we can’t accommodate dogs that are known to chase cats. We can also arrange to have horses or other trail animals stay on the property. We will ask for a non-refundable $15 pet cleaning fee.

****A FINAL FINAL NOTE: Don't trust your GPS to take you to the correct SW Young Avenue. There are two streets, one of which is ours, and one of which is close, but does not connect. If you put in Peterson Rock Garden into your GPS, then look for the Young Avenue that looks like the letter "L" lying on it's side, you'll be led to the right place.

****A FINAL FINAL FINAL NOTE: Don't forget to visit our 'Little Free Library' located at the end of our driveway. We are always accepting books to put in there.

Guest Access

The master bedroom, small bunkroom, private bathroom.
The living/dining room part of our home.
Long-term guests may have access to our kitchen and washer/dryer.
Outside - access to playset, a variety of outside toys/activities; access to the pond.

As we do have a rental home on the property and a little cottage where folks live, there are areas where we ask our guests not to intrude.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little as our guests would like. We prefer to greet our guests when they arrive. We both work during the day, but try to make ourselves available in the evening.

The Neighborhood

We live in such a beautiful and serene location. Step outside our home and take in the grandeur of the the mountain view

Getting around

No, there isn't convenient public transportation. A car is needed. Bicycling is awesome where we live.

Other Things to Note

We're a family and live out in the country. We're not far from civilization, but we like to remind people we live in a farming community and while we try to maintain a clean and neat home, we consider ourselves to have a comfortable, lived in home. We have a dog, four cats and life in the country means theres dust, insects, spiders, lizards and lots of other wildlife.

We work very hard on keeping the guest room is very, very clean and virtually pet free.

  • Andy & Shari were great hosts. We enjoyed chatting with them about their travels and the area, and they also gave us plenty of space to be on our own. Their place is out in the country, about 15 minutes from downtown Bend, which was great for our dogs The room was very clean and comfortable.

  • The room, location, and family were absolutely wonderful! Nothing in particular to bring up in this review, because it was just such a nice experience :)

  • My stay at the Farm was lovely, the family were very inviting and friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area and the things to see and do. Was great to be able to have a chat in the mornings and evenings, but come and go as I pleased, and have time on my own if I wanted. The house is well placed to being close to Bend, Camp Sherman and a whole host of amazing places. The room was perfect, with a veranda to sit out on too. The pets were great as well, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and am happy to recommend this as a great holiday base. Many thanks to Shari and Andy, and the girls.

  • Shari and Andi were fantastic hosts! Very welcoming, the suite with private bathroom is clean and quiet... just what we needed after a long day on the road. We would definitely stay again! Chelsea

  • Shari and Andy (and their cats) were perfect hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with them. We could not recommend them more!
The room was clean and comfortable and the bunks were fine for us so unless you are a very large person the bunks are big enough making the room fine for 4.

  • Shari, Andy, family and critters were all friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious room and had a private bath. Andy gave good directions when I was lost and Shari connected me to some local hikers. All in all it was comfortable place.

  • Great location and great hosts! We had a wonderful visit to this idyllic, quiet and relaxing country side location in Tumelo near Bend. Shari and her husband are super friendly, their home is warm, friendly and we felt welcome, the guest room is nicely decorated. Their pets are super friendly. The morning coffee was great! The location is both beautiful and conveniently close to Bend and well connected via easy access roads. All around a great experience!

  • We loved our stay with Shari and Andy! We came with our two teenaged daughters for one night and the space was ample, private and very clean. They let us use the kitchen to make dinner the night we arrived and gave us a wonderful bike tour early the next morning, followed by a delicious breakfast. We all felt very much at home and highly recommend the beautiful spot!!

  • Shari and Andy were wonderful hosts and made us feel right at home in their beautiful spot in the country. They are interesting people with a lot to share and a refreshing, open world view. We enjoyed the comfy room, their hospitality, and panorama of the mountains. Would love to stay with them again!

  • Lucy and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Shari and family. Her daughters made us coffee in the morning, the cats and dog were amazingly friendly and our bedroom with private bath was very welcoming and comfortable. We only wish we could have met Andy and perhaps stayed another night! But, we had to keep moving. We highly recommend staying with them.
