Relaxing Ohana has plenty space for two or four. Main bedroom opens to pool. Large bathroom has jet tub and stone floor shower. Very private, yet just minutes from downtown and some of the best snorkeling around. Perfect for honeymooners.
Ohana means family in Hawaiian, and that is why we are touched that what we would call the "in-law" unit on the mainland is so endearing here. Either way, great relationships are built on being close but having private space as well.
Our ohana is attached to the main house where we live, but has no direct pass-through. The main door enters from the covered driveway into the living room. Simple and comfortable, it includes a ceiling fan, seating, and a copy of The Curse of Lono, a strange history of the Big Island.
The kitchenette includes a sink and counter, coffee maker and coffee, a mini-fridge with water, and microwave. Some dishes are included, and more can be provided upon request.
Bathroom has nice tub and shower (see pics), towels and washcloths, simple shampoo and conditioner and a new bar of soap (because we know its not fun to travel with too many liquids!).
The master bedroom opens to the pool. It has a large closet and ceiling fan. The 22" flat screen TV is tucked away in island inspired furniture. Sony Dream Machine alarm clock/CD player to keep time or wake you up in time for fishing in the morning.
The second room converts from a home gym to a second bedroom, depending on needs. The 19" flat screen TV/DVD player is mounted on the wall and rotates for multiple uses. This space is difficult to photograph, because the closet is mirrors and all we get is reflection. Its simple, yet plenty for additional space.
The Ohana is a separate unit that is attached to the main house. It has its own entrance attached to the driveway and back doors that open to the pool area.
The unit is a private area. The rest are communal areas that you are welcome to.
The Pool Area:
The pool is heated and professionally maintained weekly. There are lounge chairs, a table and chairs, and a charcoal grill made of lava rocks. There is an outdoor bathroom that includes toilet, faucet, and shower with hot water.
Our yard goes all the way around the house. Enjoy the landscaping and whatever produce you can find (lemons, breadfruit, mangoes, dragon fruit, flowers). In the backyard is our "surf shack" where we keep lots of beach gear for the enjoyment of all. We have beach chairs, umbrellas, snorkel gear in most sizes, surf boards and sup (stand-up paddle) board, boogie boards, sand mats, pop-up tent, and even spearfishing gear if you are feeling adventurous. Ask us for suggestions on guides on any adventure you are interested in.
Lanai is Hawaiian for patio space, which our home has plenty of. The Ohana opens to the pool which has chairs and covered space, but the front lanai offers a perfect place to watch the sunset, enjoy drinks, or relax in the hammock...or all at once! Any lanai is the perfect place to smoke, with many ashtrays available, but please no tobacco indoors.
Interaction with Guests
We live in the main house that is attached to the Ohana, or guest house. When we are home, we are very friendly...but we are fishermen which means we work long days and come home very tired. Our schedules change depending on the season and time of week, but we will be available for tropical adult beverages, local kine info, and other things needed. The houses are separate but attached, so we are best suited to guests that are relaxed and flexible like us.
We have a bulldog. She is friendly and curious. If you leave the doors open, she will come through for an "inspection." She is not destructive, but to avoid surprise visits, keep the doors closed.
We live on the north side of the Walua Trail, a 3 mile residential road that doubles as a fitness track. A slight incline and patches of shade make our road a popular area for walking, running, and biking. With occasional views of the ocean and a close look at the unique homes on the road, the trail is always interesting (oh yea, plenty animals like turkeys, chickens, dogs in yards and on walks, many others). With no sidewalks and some blind turns, it is important to pay attention, but this is also what makes our community so strong!
You will need to have a car. There is plenty of parking here, but we are located at 1,000 mauka (up the mountain) and walking to beaches or town is not really an option.
Other Things to Note
We fish! We want to take you fishing!
When we decide to move to Kona it was for one reason, to FISH! We would love to take you out on the calm blue waters here in the sport fishing capitol of the world! You decide, do we hunt for the fish of a lifetime (we have cause a Grander, a blue marlin over 1,000 lbs, (see photos), or do we go try to find dinner???
Our nightly rate includes the steep Hawaii taxes, 4.166% GE and 9.25% Transient Accommodation Tax. Sorry to pass that on, but at least it is included and not added at the end! All taxes, fees, and costs are included in the price quoted to you by air BnB.
There will be an up charge for early check in and late check out. This is the most fair way to manage which groups get priority when there is overlap in demand. It also allows us to motivate the cleaning lady to adjust her schedule. The fee is $20 per hour, up to $50 when time is available.
This is a lovely place to stay for a couple of nights. The pool is great! We would definitely come back. For more than a couple of nights, the apartment might be inadequate as the kitchen space is tiny and under-stocked. Any sort of food prep or cooking is a challenge. The only other thing to note is that there is no door between the 2nd bedroom and living space so it's hard for kids to get a dark, quiet space in the evenings.

We had a great time enjoying this beautiful space. Molly welcomed us with a warm aloha and some truly fantastic banana bread. The pool was as inviting as the pictures suggest and the pictures of the living space are spot-on. We loved the location--it's a beautiful location, just a short drive to great kayaking, snorkeling, groceries and night life. We also had a fun fishing day with our hosts--truly the perfect week. I give Molly and Shawn (and bulldog Peyton!) two enthusiastic thumbs up.
The place was great and Molly was great. Beach towels, snorkel gears and boogie boards they provided were very useful. The spacious unit decorated in island style was also nice. It would have been nice if we could have spent more time in the house and around the house, but our stay was short and Big island had so much to offer. This unit is perfect for anyone, friends, family or couples.
We had a great stay! Everything came as advertised. Unfortunately, we weren't able to meet Shawn, but Molly (and Peyton) were very hospitable hosts. Would to come back next time we're on the island.

And Molly too! We are a young couple married for many years. We decided not to let kids cramp our style, so we got a bulldog instead. Since moving to the Big Island, we do not vacation much, so we love to host parties, visitors, and friends.
We fish. The reason we moved to Kona is the world class fishing. It paid off quickly in August of 2012 when we caught the fish of a lifetime, a blue marlin over 1,000 pounds, known as a Grander. Not every fish needs to be the biggest though; we catch wahoo, mahi mahi, tuna, and other delicious types of fish as well. We would love to take more people fishing to truly experience the Big Island.
When not fishing, we are either golfing, cooking our fresh catch, or creating delicious cocktails with local fruit juices. We enjoy sharing our time and experiences, especially with people who have a limited time to spend here.
