About this listing
Come stay in our 1956, 17 foot, El Rey, Airstream-like trailer. It is nestled under some junipers on our 20 acre property in Central Oregon, with views of Cascades Mountains. Here you will find tranquility, peace & a step back in time.
Have you ever thought about staying in a vintage travel trailer? Come stay with us in our 1956, 17 foot, El Rey Airstream-like trailer. We have it nestled under some junipers on our 20 acre property in Central Oregon, with views of Cascades Mountains.
Why stay in a hotel or motel, or camp at a crowded camp ground, when you can have your own private adventure! This is truly a vacation opportunity unlike any other. While it is a bit like camping, it's much more. It's glamping at its finest!
The El Rey is compact, cozy (very cozy!) & comfortable. It includes everything that you'll need for your restful stay. It is equipped with two mattresses (a single and a full as a bunk) and a sofa for sleeping. The bottom bunk is 48" wide versus a typical full-size mattress, which is 54" wide. So, it will fit two slender bodies - we guarantee you'll be cozy!
The sofa will sleep one small/average size person. There is a portable heater, blankets & sleeping bags.
Again, the El Rey is a very cozy living and sleeping space. It you prefer bigger sleeping spaces...you might feel a little claustrophobic in the El Rey.
The El Rey also has; a small refrigerator, a three burner stove/oven, storage cabinets, an on-demand instant hot water heater (outside/propane) shower and *toilet. You can make your meals using the propane stove/oven, or use the fire pit. The pantry has utensils, pots/pans & some cooking items for your use.
*The toilet is very compact and works a bit different than a normal house toilet. It has a flapper valve and uses gravity to remove wastes, like that on a boat. It's a "pee only" toilet so guests need to come inside our home to use our spare bathroom (set up for Airbnb guests) for other bathroom functions.
We have an outdoor shower & an outdoor kitchen to wash dishes. Both use the propane instant hot water heater & are directly outside the El Rey.
You should be able to get WiFi outside of the trailer, but may not be able to pick up the signal from our router. But no worries. Our home is about 40 feet away and you can sit on our porch for all your WiFi needs.
PLEASE READ: There is a space heater and the El Rey is insulated, but when the weather turns colder, we won't be able rent it out So, the El Rey is generally available from mid/late April to mid/late October.
Our property is located in Tumalo, a small community in Central Oregon. We call our property “GADSHILL FARM”, which was named after our great grandfather's (George Andrew Dunning) 19th century farm in southeastern Pennsylvania. We were very fortunate to inherit the “GADSHILL FARM” sign, made by GAD’s son.
Our property is ideally situated. It is far enough to be “out in the country”, yet close enough in to get to all the places you want to go. We’re about 6 miles from Redmond, 8 miles from Bend and about 20 miles from Sisters. The closest store/coffee shop is in Tumalo, about 5-miles away.
We’re about 45-minutes from Mt Bachelor ski resort, about 1-hr from Hoodoo and about 30-minutes from cross country
We’re about 1 mile from the infamous Peterson Rock Garden, a roadside architecture and geologic attraction, built by Rasmus Petersen in the 1930’s. The Peterson Rock Garden was recently listed as one of the “Most Endangered Places” on the Historic Preservation League of Oregon’s top ten list.
The roads around us are rural, making it ideal for bicycling, even for young ones. We are experienced bicyclists and can provide you with excellent information on bicycle rides in the area.
ABOUT OUR PROPERTY:
Along with our home, there are several other buildings on our property, including a second home (which we rent), a large shop/studio, hay barn and small cabin (currently in use).
There are horses and chickens on the property, as well as domestic animals. We have five rescue cats; four are indoor cats and one has outside privileges. Unfortunately, we no longer allow pets in the El Rey.
As we live on the property, we think it fair that you know a little about us:
•There are two adults, Shari and Andy. Shari is an Environmental Scientist and writer. She wrote a book about the family’s volunteering in Ecuador and Peru, which was published in 2011.
•Andy is a Photographer; he published a photography book (Southern Exposures). He manages our property and is a person of multiple skills and trades.
•We have two daughters. One attends Oregon State University in Corvallis. The other is a 9th grader.
•We love to travel. In 2011-2012, we lived in Plasencia, Extremadura, Spain. Andy and Shari taught English and the girls attended Spanish public schools. We've volunteered in Ecuador and Peru, spent weeks in Guatemala and Mexico and have traveled throughout much of the U.S and parts of Europe.
•We love to play music and have a house full of instruments.
•We love being active. We hike, run, bike, canoe and ski. We love sharing our knowledge about Central Oregon and about anything else.

Interaction with Guests
As little or as much as they would like!
We love the peace and serenity. We love watching the wildlife. We love being so close in, yet feeling like we're away from it all.
Sorry, no convenient public transportation
Other Things to Note
We've lived in this area a long time and have a lot of knowledge to share about what to do. We're avid bicyclists and love to hike.
We are out in the country and are a family. As such, we appreciate quiet spaces and family customs. No smoking, no drugs, no partying, no excessive drinking.
We are a family from Bend, Oregon in the US. Last year we lived in Spain. My husband and I taught English and our daughters attended school. We're back home now and had so much fun using Airbnb in Europe that we've decided to become hosts!
