About This Listing
A quiet refuge hidden away in one of the hippest neighbourhoods of Montreal, with access to two bus routes within three blocks and seven minutes to the nearest metro station. We are a ten-minute walk from “the mountain” - Mont-Royal Park, which has opportunities year-round for walking, running, skiing and skating. The Plateau has some of the best food, drinks, coffee, and vintage shopping in town! A thirty-minute walk will take you downtown, to Old Montreal, to several museums, as well as up to the open-air Jean-Talon farmers' market and over to the historic Outremont area of Montreal. Visitors are also welcome to use Montreal's Bixi bike-sharing programme, with bikes parked at several stations within five minutes of the Zen Centre.
This simply appointed bedroom, the Garden Room, has a double bed, desk, chair, lamp, night table with reading lamp and clothes chest. The window and tomato balcony door look out onto the private garden area complete with apple and sour cherry trees. Guests share a large bathroom, and a reading room on the second floor of a large 1880's brick house. A weekly schedule of Zen meditation occurs on the ground floor which is open-concept and which has a small bathroom and kitchen/dining area and meditation hall. You may choose to enjoy your coffee at the table in the lovely small garden courtyard of the Zen Centre. Linens and towels are supplied. Electric kettle, cutlery and dishes are available for coffee, tea, bowl of cold cereal (no cooking or other food prep) along with fridge access. Guests are asked to clean up the kitchen after themselves. The house is vegetarian so guests are asked to not bring home meat or fish.
Guests are welcome to join the meditation schedule (Monday to Friday: 6-7:30am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 6-7:30pm, Saturday, 9:30-11am most weeks of the year) after arranging an instruction session of 25 minutes with the host, Myokyo, the abbess of the centre. Movement about and in and out of the house is restricted during these time periods. This has not proved a problem with guests in the past as most are not up and about by 7:30am, and most are out to dinner or resting before heading out for dinner during the evening meditation. All guests will receive a brief intro to the Zen tradition.
Myokyo lives off-site, about two blocks away, with the Zen Centre dog (who occasionally visits), but usually is working in the office upstairs at the Zen Centre during the day. She is readily available to greet you, to answer questions and to send you off to the corner for the best croissants and baguettes to be had in the city.
There is one off-street parking space available for guests from April to mid-November ie no winter parking, and free street parking.
Other Things to Note
There is no winter parking at the Zen Centre ie no off-street parking from mid-November to the end of March.
Guests are welcome to smoke out in the garden but not indoors.
Please be respectful of other guests, the landlord who lives in the carriage house behind the house, and the neighbours, in terms of being quiet after 11pm.
Guests are asked to be aware of the meditation schedule and of no movement in and out of the house during the scheduled sessions. Please make an appointment with Myokyo for instruction if you would like to join the meditation.
Again, a reminder of the vegetarian space – fabulous Portuguese fish restaurants, all ethnic cuisines, vegan and vegetarian restos in the neighbourhood!
Beautiful space, great host. Very relaxing, and located right in the heart of Montreal. Can recommend 100%.
Loved my stay with Myokyo at her Zen Center.
Myokyo - She's a very welcoming host and has a lot to share with the world. She's also very knowledgeable about the city and is more than willing to help point you in the right direction. Unfortunately I only got to attend one abbreviated meditation and had limited contact with Myokyo during my visit due to my schedule, but that only means I can catch up my next visit :)
The Space - The Zen Center is exactly how it appears in the pictures; very peaceful, very soothing. The Meditation Hall was beautiful in person as well and the library has many interesting books on Zen and so forth. Like others have stated, the space is mostly just a place to rest during your stay.
Neighborhood - The area is extremely convenient and filled with personality. Lots of restaurants, shops, parks, cultural jaunts (like art galleries) and the like are all within walking distance.
I'd recommend staying with Myokyo to anyone. Thank you!
Staying at Myokyo's Zen center is always a pleasure. Not only do I always find repose and a clean place to stay, I love attending some of the Zen meditation sessions led by Myokyo as well. This is a really fantastic place for people who are respectful and who are looking for a quiet pillow to rest their head on while in Montreal (party-goers should probably stay away). In addition, Myokyo communicates well, is honest and reliable. I highly recommend it.
Myokyo is an excellent host--attentive, informed, caring and easy to talk to. The Zen Center is exceptionally quiet and restful. My room was a place I could feel comfortable in all night, and if I needed to, all day. It is very clean and cosy in winter--or in spring when snow flakes were still falling. The croissants at nearby Kouign Amann are the best I've ever had! I felt great after staying at Myokyo's.
The house fits perfectly to the description and the surroundings are perfect to have a great dinner or have a drink in cool places (Boulevard St Laurent and Rue Sant Denis). Very close to Mount Royal and not far away to downtown and old town (3/4 subway stops). Besides that, Myokyo is an amazing host, not only can be reached a good sleep quality (better than many hotels) if not the experience meeting her makes a perfect environment to discover and enjoy Montreal. Thanks Myokyo, I hope to see you soon.
Staying at the zen centre was a wonderful choice! Myokyo was a wonderful host -- she even helped us scout out (and shovel out) a parking space. She was also very helpful while we were planning our trip. The room and the whole house are beautiful, and very cozy, which was the best part since it was -10(f) outside! The location was perfect for us as well. It's close to the buses and there are great restaurants, cafes and bars on every corner in the neighborhood. We had a fabulous time!

About the Host, Myokyo
I am obviously very involved in Zen practice. I have a keen interest in dogs, growing vegetables, climbing on Mont-Royal, artisanal beers (especially Porters) and excellent salads...
Quiet, but fun-loving and creative, I would say!
