The space

A quiet refuge hidden away in one of the hippest neighbourhoods of Montreal, with access to two bus routes within three blocks and seven minutes to the nearest metro station. We are a ten-minute walk from “the mountain” - Mont-Royal Park, which has opportunities year-round for walking, running, skiing and skating. The Plateau has some of the best food, drinks, coffee, and vintage shopping in town!  A thirty-minute walk will take you downtown, to Old Montreal, to several museums, as well as up to the open-air Jean-Talon farmers' market and over to the historic Outremont area of Montreal. Visitors are also welcome to use Montreal's Bixi bike-sharing programme, with bikes parked at several stations within five minutes of the Zen Centre.

This simply appointed bedroom, the Garden Room, has a double bed, desk, chair, lamp, night table with reading lamp and clothes chest. The window and balcony door look out onto the private garden area complete with apple and sour cherry trees. Guests share a large bathroom, and a reading room on the second floor of a large 1880's brick house. Linens and towels are supplied. A weekly schedule of Zen meditation occurs on the ground floor which is open-concept and which has a small bathroom and kitchen/dining area and meditation hall. Complimentary coffee and teas are available; however, there is no other kitchen access, as noted in the Amenities section. Guests are expected to eat out during their stay, and not to bring take-out food home. You may choose to enjoy your coffee at the table in the lovely small garden courtyard of the Zen Centre.

Guests are welcome to join the meditation schedule (Monday to Friday: 6-7:00am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 6-7:30pm, Saturday, 9:30-11am most weeks of the year) after arranging an instruction session of 15 minutes with the host, Myokyo, the abbess of the centre. Movement about and in and out of the house is restricted during these time periods. This has not proved a problem with guests in the past as most are not up and about by 7:00am, and most are out to dinner or resting before heading out for dinner during the evening meditation. All guests will receive a brief intro to the Zen tradition.

Myokyo lives on-site with the Zen Centre dog, Kyozan (a large sweet Husky-type pooch), and usually is working in the office upstairs at the Zen Centre or in the garden during the day. She is readily available to greet you, to answer questions and to send you off to the corner for the best croissants and baguettes to be had in the city.

There is one off-street parking space available for guests from April to mid-November ie no winter parking, and free street parking.

Other things to note

There is no winter parking at the Zen Centre ie no off-street parking from mid-November to the end of March.

We enjoyed our stay with Myokyo and her dog. Nice, central, and convenient location, close to all areas of the city. Parking is limited - only two cars can fit in the rather small driveway. Lovely room with comfortable furnishings. No private entrance, though, and if you stay in the Garden Room, be aware that entering and exiting the room means that you will have to walk through the "library" which is where the host often works during the day.

Myokyo's zen center is a wonderful combination of residence and community, both a home base for travelers and a resource for the community. (She runs meditation sessions and distributes CSA shares for neighbors.) Her elegant two story home, adorned with peaceful decor, is blessed by her friendly dog Kyosan. Coming back from a long hike, we were rejuvenated here and slept restfully. I highly recommend this place for anyone visiting Montreal.

This was my very first experience with Airbnb and it was good. Location of this house is excellent, in a very nice neighbourhood but in a quiet street. Parking spot available but it's small, so it could be a problem if you have a big truck. Lots of restaurants and shops nearby, subway station (Mont Royal) a 10-min walk away. Host Myokyo was very nice, she was waiting for me in front of the house around the time I was expected to arrive (it is very easy to miss the place at night). I loved meeting the other guests in the house. Room is basic (it's a Buddhist temple) but comfortable enough if spending just a couple of nights. It doesn't have blinds or blackout curtains, so during the summer you will wake up with sunrise. This could be a bit of an inconvenience as we cannot use the (shared) bathroom from 6-7 am because it is meditation time at the temple (see rules of the house). Maybe because I am a new using Airbnb, I didn't find all the information about the strict rules at first. Wi-fi was fast, tea or coffee are available in the kitchen and both check-in and check-out were very easy.

Myokyo's was a lovely host who went out of her way to make our stay wonderful. The center was comfortable and quiet. Not only that, it was very beautiful and had an impressive garden. Because of its perfect location, my family had a slew of restaurants and transportation to choose from. ( Myokyo also gave us several recommendations for places to eat and do.) Our trip would not have been the same if we had not stayed with Myokyo. My family enjoyed our conversations together and seeing Kyozan everyday was an added bonus. It was such a lovely, peaceful stay. I hope to return very soon.

Amira, very special to meet you, your sister and your parents. I enjoyed the garden discussions with your father, as well. I hope that you will come again soon. The whole family is welcome! Warmest, Myokyo

This was our second time staying with Myokyo, and it was just as good as the first. Room is very quiet, clean and comfortable and Myokyo is a wonderful host. Just make sure you are aware of the Meditation schedule before you decide to stay. We had no problem as we were out or sleeping during all of the meditation sessions.

Response from Myokyo:
Ronan, it was great to host you and Claire again! Thank you for mentioning the meditation schedule as oftentimes potential guests do not read or compute the whole description. In fact, for new guests, I double check that they know about Kyozan, the meditation schedule and no kitchen access other than coffee/tea before accepting their reservation. (I skipped most of that with you as you were returning guests...) Many thanks to Claire for the lovely gift!

This was a very peaceful and comfortable place to stay. Myokyo was very welcoming and kind, and made me feel at home. I had been interested in meditation for a long time, but afraid to take the first step. I chose to stay here because I felt it would be a great opportunity to try meditation for the first time. Myokyo was a very patient instructor and I am really glad I tried this. Now that I'm home in San Francisco, I'm looking to continue meditating. Location: This listing is on a quiet street half a block from the bustling Mont-Royal street. It's a 10-minute walk to the subway, which is extremely convenient. Communication: Myokyo was responsive and a very clear communicator. Overall: My 3-day trip to Montreal was one of the most relaxing vacations I've had, largely due to my stay in Myokyo's. I highly recommend Myokyo's listing!

I am obviously very involved in Zen practice. I have a keen interest in dogs, growing vegetables, climbing on Mont-Royal, artisanal beers (especially Porters) and excellent salads...

Quiet, but fun-loving and creative, I would say!
