The Space

On the ground floor of a Queenslander cottage settled in the Greek/Vietnamese Communities of Brisbane.

Famous for querky cafes and a wide range of excellent restaurants of every style. A favourite haven for students and hippies too. Walking distance from the river walkways and 2.5 kms from the city centre (less to the cultural centre)- yet in the centre of a quiet street that was, thankfully, untouched by recent floods

You will have access to a large, light and airy double room with private courtyard at the entrance (independent of the house) with fitted wardrobes, attached bathroom - all recently renovated. Kitchen laundry next door shared with adjoining apartment.

Access to landscaped, nightly lit tropical backyard complete with hammocks. Wireless internet, breakfast and parking can be arranged on request at no extra cost. We have bicycles too with helmets and locks - although the City Cycle scheme is amazing and only a street away in each direction. We will love to have you at my place. It will be a pleasure to host you :-)

Guest Access

Your bathroom is ensuite - only shared if someone takes the room next door. A fridge a small seating area in the entrance to the room and access to a well stocked kitchenette you can choose to use seating inside or in the garden for meal times at home.

Interaction with Guests

You will be looked after mostly by my daughter Eleanor and her boyfriend Kurt. They are both at university full time and also work part time so it's best to get their mobile number and negotiate with them if you want to spend time with them. Your area of the house is totally independent. If you are staying for a week or more you will meet my lovely friend Cleo who will change your bedding and help you keep living areas clean. I am currently working in Sydney so am only there once a month for a week.

The Neighborhood

We love everything about the neighbourhood, particularly the West End markets on Saturday mornings at Davey Park next to the river only 10 minutes walk from the house. Also the area is steeped in Greek, Vietnamese, Italian and Aboriginal history. 20 minutes walk from South Bank and the Cultural Centre and a ride on the City Cat Ferry is a must - take the 199 from the end of the street to the Ferry and get a sense of the heart of Brisbane from the river views stop off at the Powerhouse, New Farm while you're at it - always something interesting happening there!

Getting around

I travel between Brisbane and Sydney a lot so when I am not around you will be cared for by my daughter, Eleanor and her boyfriend Kurt.

From the airport take the airtrain to South Brisbane and leave the station on the side that leads to the Cultural Centre and the River. Walk across the road and follow the signs to the bus terminal (you will need to go up onto an overpass and take the lift/stairs onto the platform) then take the 199 bus towards West End Ferry. It will travel through the centre of West End on Boundary Street and then turn right into Vulture St - you will need to get off at the 2nd stop on Vulture St called Paris St (opposite the Primary School). Then walk back to Turin St and we are half way along on the right hand side - you can't miss the orange fence!
The 199 leaves every 5-10 minutes in peak hours and will take you to the Adelaide St side of the city stopping next to City Hall. It then carries on through China Town and ends it's route at New Farm where you can visit the Power House Arts Centre, have a picnic in New Farm Park and catch the New Farm Ferry back to West End.

Other Things to Note

There are people living above you and we have wooden floors for hygiene reasons and to minimise asthma in family members - so don't be alarmed if you are aware of people walking above you!!! You will have your own private double room and an adjoining courtyard. The bathroom is ensuite for BOTH rooms. If you prefer exclusive use of the bathroom and kitchen/ laundry then we suggest that you book the whole apartment.

  • I was not too pleased with the shared bathroom. Especially when the guest in the other room forgets to unlock your door. This happened to me and there was no way to enter the bathroom...I think this should be mentioned in the conditions in a clearer way. I overlooked the fact that the bathroom had to be shared.

    Response from Debra:

    Hi Christine,
I apologise that you did not see this mentioned in the listing. I do have signs up to remind guests to unlock the door. It would have been helpful if you had shared this with me during your stay. I will put up larger signs. The price of the room does take into account the shared facilities and if you wanted the whole area to yourself you could have booked the apartment rather than the room.

  • We received a rapid, enthusiastic and helpful response from our host, Debra, to our initial booking which set the standard for the duration of our stay. The room and adjoining kitchen and bathroom were an attractive, independent set-up for our first few days in Brisbane.

Debra is attentive, warm and welcoming and we appreciated the breakfast too.

The house is a perfect example of Brisbane living, set in the middle of the most characterful suburb in Brisbane. Debra knows and understands West End and can advise where to eat, what to do and how to appreciate this special place.

  • Debra's house was in the perfect location, near essential bus stops in West End, and also great for accessing the main parts of town (restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc). We loved her house, it has so much personality, and the rooms are very vibrant. The kitchen area is stocked with pots and pans and everything you would need to cook, which is a great alternative to buying meals out in West End. We would definitely recommend! Thank you for everything.

  • I stayed 2 months in the house. Debra is a wonderful host, very helpful. The room is lovely, big and clean. I felt very independent with my own space. The house is in an excellent location. Distance walk to the city, and close to restaurant, buses and supermarket.
I would stay there again and can absolutely recommend this place! thank you Debra !

  • I had such a wonderful experience living with Debra. She treated me like a family not a guest. My fridge was always full of fresh yoghurt and milk.

Turin St is very convenient to the city. West end is also a very livable place for people at all ages!

    Highly recommended!

  • We had a great time in Brisbane and enjoyed our stay in the colourful house. Debra makes you feel at home. The rooms are clean, welcoming and very well situated, in a quiet area but just a few minutes from cafés and shops. We love walking and we managed to do everything on foot from Debra's place. West End is definitely our favourite place in Brisbane and we recommended Debra's rooms to several acquaintances in Rockhampton. If we are back in Brisbane, no doubt we will contact Debra!

  • Debra is a truly amazing lady - no problem was to much for her to resolve, despite the fact that she leads a very hectic professional life. When you're away from home, it's the little things that count, and Debra was just so thoughtful, and always keeeping me informed re any shops, markets etc nearby that she thought I would be interested in. A very warm hearted atmosphere, reflected in the bright, comfortabe room, topped off with a fantastic comfortable bed.

  • Debra's an amazing host. She's very friendly and helpful. Felt so welcome during my short stay at the Jacaranda room. The room's pretty big and it's clean and tidy. It almost feels as if you're at home (for me). Haha.

West End is a very convenient area as well. Bus stops are around the corner. 2 minutes walk tops. The shops are convenient and nearby.

Had a pleasant stay and couldn't ask for more.

    Thank you Debra!
