About this listing

Named after the glorious Jacaranda trees, inspiring the feature wall, this large room has 2 external windows that let in lots of light. Comfortable queen bed (with room for a single sofa bed if required) & adjoining internal courtyard with fridge, table & chair. Cafes in abundance a couple of streets away. An option to book the eat in kitchen as well to make this a 1 bed apartment. If this is what you want please book 'Groovy Apartment' and stipulate you want The Jacaranda Room as your bedroom.

The space

On the ground floor of a Queenslander cottage settled in the Greek/Vietnamese Communities of Brisbane.

Famous for querky cafes and a wide range of excellent restaurants of every style. A favourite haven for students and hippies too. Walking distance from the river walkways and 2.5 kms from the city centre (less to the cultural centre)- yet in the centre of a quiet street that was, thankfully, untouched by recent floods

You will have access to a large, light and airy double room with private courtyard at the entrance (independent of the house) with fitted wardrobes, attached bathroom - all recently renovated. Kitchen laundry next door shared with adjoining apartment.

Access to landscaped, nightly lit tropical backyard complete with hammocks. Wireless internet, breakfast and parking can be arranged on request at no extra cost. We have bicycles too with helmets and locks - although the City Cycle scheme is amazing and only a street away in each direction. We will love to have you at my place. It will be a pleasure to host you :-)

Guest access

Your bathroom is ensuite - only shared if you choose to take the room next door as a 2 bed apartment. A fridge, a small seating area in the entrance to the room and access to the outside eating area provides you will studio apartment living. If you want access to a well stocked kitchenette you can choose to book the groovy apartment and specify that you want the Jacaranda Room for sleeping. Use seating inside or in the garden for meal times at home.

Interaction with guests

Your room will be prepared by my lovely friend Kristyn. Your area of the house is totally independent. If you are staying for a week or more you may meet me or Kristyn who will change your bedding and help you keep the living areas clean. I am currently working in Sydney so am only there once a month for a long weekend to see family and tidy up the garden. Two of my children are now living independently nearby while they finish their university studies.

Other things to note

There may be people living above you and we have wooden floors for hygiene reasons and to minimise asthma in family members - so don't be alarmed if you are aware of people walking above you!!! You will have your own private double room and an adjoining courtyard. The bathroom is ensuite for BOTH rooms. If you prefer exclusive use of the bathroom and kitchen/ laundry then we suggest that you book the room as a one bed apartment rather than the studio. Just stipulate you want The Jacaranda Room as your bedroom rather than the Chilli Room.

Dear Debra, we enjoyed staying at your home. Especially living in West-End Brisbane was beautiful. Thanks Jürgen

I enjoyed staying at Debra's house. It's very conveniently located in West End, close to a lot of restaurants and bars.

I was not too pleased with the shared bathroom. Especially when the guest in the other room forgets to unlock your door. This happened to me and there was no way to enter the bathroom...I think this should be mentioned in the conditions in a clearer way. I overlooked the fact that the bathroom had to be shared.

Response from Debra:
Hi Christine, I apologise that you did not see this mentioned in the listing. I do have signs up to remind guests to unlock the door. It would have been helpful if you had shared this with me during your stay. I will put up larger signs. The price of the room does take into account the shared facilities and if you wanted the whole area to yourself you could have booked the apartment rather than the room.

We received a rapid, enthusiastic and helpful response from our host, Debra, to our initial booking which set the standard for the duration of our stay. The room and adjoining kitchen and bathroom were an attractive, independent set-up for our first few days in Brisbane. Debra is attentive, warm and welcoming and we appreciated the breakfast too. The house is a perfect example of Brisbane living, set in the middle of the most characterful suburb in Brisbane. Debra knows and understands West End and can advise where to eat, what to do and how to appreciate this special place.

Debra's house was in the perfect location, near essential bus stops in West End, and also great for accessing the main parts of town (restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc). We loved her house, it has so much personality, and the rooms are very vibrant. The kitchen area is stocked with pots and pans and everything you would need to cook, which is a great alternative to buying meals out in West End. We would definitely recommend! Thank you for everything.
