The Space

We are offering a private bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor of our home. Our private living quarters are upstairs.
Our home is one block from Seacliff beach in Aptos and just above the steps down to the cement ship. You will have access to your own private deck and a quiet, attractive back yard. We have free wi-fi, cable TV and ipod, ipad charger, refrigerator and microwave available in your room. Also, you will have both coffee and tea makings to start your mornings. We provide fresh fruit and pastry for breakfast.

Upstairs is our private area. Please do not come upstairs. Please text or Yoo Hoo us!

We are just three blocks from several wonderful and very reasonably priced restaurants.

We provide beach towels and we have an outdoor warm shower for rinsing after you have been to the beach. We have a quiet neighborhood that comes alive in the summer. We have a large driveway for you to park in.

We do have three outdoor cats who wander in at night but only walk past the guest area on their way upstairs. They are not allowed in the guest area and are frightened of strangers so they should not be a bother to those allergic. The guest room is brand new with paint, new wood floors and new bedding so there should be no allergy issues.

If you love to bike you are in 7th heaven as Nisene Marks State Redwood Forest is merely 1/8 mile away and is full of bike trails that culminate in a steep climb (if you wish) to a summit which offers amazing views of Monterey Bay. You can also arrange for a ride to the top and coast down. In addition it is a beautiful park to hike and picnic.
Seacliff State Beach is merely yards from the house across a field and down the state park stairs. It is a wonderful beach with tables and BBQs, and a wharf which is connected to an old cement ship and a history museum.

Come stay with us and find out what this area has to offer. You'll come back year after year. It is very good for young and old. Bike in the morning and beach in the afternoon then party downtown Santa Cruz.

John teaches piano and guitar lessons after 1pm daily, upstairs, which are not heard in the downstairs bedroom. He will be home most all times to help with questions and needs.

We encourage international travelers as we have toured much in Europe, Balkans, Philippines, Hawaii, Alaska and always are yearning to hear of other destinations and other peoples homes and cultures.

We can accommodate a futon bed, if needed, in the second bedroom downstairs for $25. This is temporary since we have plans to make a second airbnb in that room.

  • Mary and John were great hosts! They were very welcoming and prepared everything so nicely, including freshly baked scones in the morning! They had great suggestions for what to do around the area and share awesome stories. The room was great and the bed is super comfy :)

  • Mary and John's place was just the perfect spot for a stopover on our road trip up the Pacific Coast. You have the entire bottom floor to yourself and can enjoy a deliciously prepared breakfast out on the back deck in the morning. It's a 10min walk down to the beach and the pier; nice place to be at sunset. Mary and John are lovely people living (email hidden) on the Californian coast. Would highly recommend their place.

  • We loved our short visit in Aptos. Mary and John's place was clean, quiet, and cheerful, and just a short walk to the beach! A bonus was getting to hear John play with a band at a local restaurant. We also loved the redwood forest nearby that he recommended.

Thanks for coming to hear me play... sorry I didn't get a chance to say hi! Hope your dinner was good as well... Sorry about the temp issue... we've lived here in the chilly climate so long that we don't think about the "hot-landers" being cold! Hope to see you again

  • The Air BnB experience with Mary and John was my "first"! I have traveled all over and my experience at their home was just like my stays in European small hotels! Their bedroom and bathroom, along with the porch in the beautiful and peaceful backyard were a haven for me, beginning with THEE most comfy bed to the freshly ground coffee (email hidden) to the most delicious breakfast with a homemade scone and tons of the freshest fruit!!
I look forward to staying at their home, again, the next time I go Santa Cruz to visit my children and grandchildren!
Thank you for such a wonderful first experience as an "AIR BnBer".

  • Mary and John are exemplary AirBnB hosts. The room is perfect; comfortable bed, extra bedding should have needed it; a fridge, microwave, cafetiere and tea to use; a sweet private deck where we took the generous and fresh breakfast provided.

Mary and John gave us total privacy, but then when we needed some advice about the next stage of our Hw1 trip, and what to do in Santa Cruz were forthcoming with great tips. More like staying with a great Aunt & Uncle than strangers. We had a lovely stay, I wish it had been a bit longer!

  • We had an absolute wonderful stay, why live at a hotel, when you can live at Mary's and John's?!

  • My husband and I want to spend a weekend in Santa Cruz and found this lovely room on Airbnb. This is my first airbnb experience. I was debating between this room and hotel for a while and finally decided to give it a try. Mary and John accepted our request very quick and gave us all information we needed to get there. It turns out a very good experience. The room is nice and clean, exactly as the picture shows. The house is very close to the beach. The breakfast is delicious. This room (email hidden) for my future airbnb searching. :)

  • John and Mary were great hosts. They were extremely accommodating on check-in time and were, despite our late arrival, still up to great us. The bed was amazingly comfortable, the room was cozy and had anything you could want. I especially enjoyed the scones, fruit, coffee & tea that we savored on the porch in the morning. Great place to stay! Would love to stay here again when in the area!

  • Mary and John were wonderful hosts! They accepted our last minute request with open arms and were so easy to coordinate with. When we arrived, John showed us the beautiful room and bathroom, which was exactly as described and shown in the photos. The whole bottom floor was given to us so there was a lot of privacy! The porch was also amazing to enjoy the delicious breakfast that John and Mary had prepared! There was tea and coffee set out for us as well. John also have us a helpful recommendation for a Mexican restaurant down the street, which was appreciated. The neighborhood is very cute, quiet and safe; and the parking could not be easier. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend this listing to anyone traveling through the area!

  • The room was lovely and just perfect! The neighborhood is gorgeous. I wish I'd had time to explore the beautiful state park just a few blocks away. Mary and John were welcoming and helpful. I'll be back again, I hope!

Mary is a nurse. Johnny is a working musician and music teacher of piano and guitar "We love meeting the people who come to our AirBnB. It is the primary reason we have started it. We also stay in AirBnB places when we travel and it has enhanced our travels immensely. Believe it or not we found out about AirBnB in Bosnia on a trip in 2011. It can be whatever you want it to be. We sometimes choose a place because of the descriptions of the host!! Why travel so far away and not meet the people that represent the culture of the land you are exploring? AirBnB has enriched our lives."
