Traditional Farmhouse in Burren Mts

House - Private room · Carran, Clare, Ireland

Our cosy but comfortable home is a traditional Irish farmhouse set in 300 acres of farmland in the heart of the Burren, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a UNESCO Geopark. 10 mins from the sea and within easy reach of Co's Galway & Limerick

The Space

Peaceful & secluded our location is great for outdoor activities, walking or spotting our unique mix of flora and fauna - or just getting away from it all and chilling out. Centrally located for Cliffs of Moher, Burren National Park, Connemara, Aran Islands, Galway/Limerick, local village entertainment, beaches and outdoor activities including surfing, rock climbing, kayaking, caving, walking, riding & fishing.

Our small cottage is a traditional farmhouse with an open fire and cosy atmosphere. We comfortably accommodate 2 guests. The bed in your room is exceptionally comfortable with a traditional hand crafted coil spring mattress, 4 feather pillows, a duck down duvet, hypoallergenic mattress and pillow protectors, and high quality pure cotton bed linen. There is a wardrobe, small chest of drawers, bedroom chair, mirror, waste paper basket and two bathrobes for your use. Your room looks across the drive to trees and the fields beyond.

Guest Access

You will have access to the shared sitting room, bathroom and kitchen as well as our garden and the farmland around us.

Interaction with Guests

We like to be here to welcome you and show you around. We have good maps of the area and lots of information on outdoor activities, the local area and things to do. After that the amount of interaction is up to you - and our availability. We lay up breakfast for you and try to be around to have breakfast with you. You are welcome to help yourselves to cereal, toast and fruit and if you'd like a cooked breakfast we are happy to cook it for you for a small additional charge (up to €6 each). You are also welcome to join us for supper (this needs to be agreed in advance. Again there is a small charge of no more than €12 per head). We give you keys and once we've checked you in you are welcome to come and go as you like.

The Neighborhood

As a non-native, I feel I can say that I love the Burren because it's like nowhere else I've ever been. The stark beauty of this area (Burren means 'a rocky place') and incredible light mix to give an array of colour on all but the dullest of days, with gold striking off the black mountains as the sun shines through on a wet day; or the purple hue of the rock on a sunny day laced with ambers, greens, browns and golds where hedgerows, hazel and grass grow along paths and flat areas broken only by the silver grey of dry stone walls picked out by the sun snaking up the hillside.

I love the peace and tranquility of this area. It's a real 'get away from it all and just 'stop' place. Many of our guests have arrived and spent their time wandering the farm, finding butterflies and moths or rare plants and resting after long tours of other parts of Ireland. All say they find the area really calm and relaxing. But if you want to get out and enjoy what the Burren has to offer we have masses to do and see on our doorstep and great local pubs for food and music.

Our farm is unique, even within this unique area. An organic farm with traditional buildings, a rural feel and immediate access to this incredible landscape.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • The farmhouse is very comfortable and homely, with the most comfy bed!! . Helen is very warm and welcoming sharing with us her knowledge of the area. After showing us around and giving us information on the local pubs and restaurants she left us to our own devises. The following morning we enjoyed fresh farm eggs and wonderful coffee. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend Helen's Farmhouse for an authentic experience in the most beautiful landscape.

Thank you Esther, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay here. Do come again! Helen

  • Delighted ! A disponible yet respectful of privacy hostess, a charming couple in a charming blue warm house with a "good vibration". Good cooking, friendly atmosphere, we rapidly felt home. And, like a 'cherry on the cake' as we say in France for a bonus, a haircut for both of us. :) Thanks, Helen and Enda ! We won't forget !

  • Had a great time with Helen and Enda! Exactly the type of warm reception and hospitality we hoped to find on our first visit to Ireland. The location was perfect for getting out of the city and meeting the locals. Would Highly recommend!

  • Our stay with in this farmhouse was wonderful. The house is beautiful and comfortable, and the landscape is just amazing. Helen and Enda are very kind and welcoming hosts and they know everything about the area. Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are all at short driving distance and there's plenty of other sights in the area. I'd highly recommend having tea at father Ted's house as well!

  • Helen is the reason I love AirBnB: to meet other travelers and have amazing, local experiences. She is very well traveled and makes her home very comfortable to her guests. She cooked an amazing dinner and we drank the night away. My only regret is not being able to stay longer. I highly, highly recommending staying on her farm and I will definitely be staying again in the future!!!! :)

There's a reason I love AirBnB and it's meeting people like you. Thanks for the lovely review. Helen

  • We were made very welcome in an exceptionally charming house in a delightful setting. Our hosts shared time with us and Helen could not have done more to make our stay enjoyable and to inform us of all or any events going on in the area at the time we were there. Thanks to her expertise as a geographer, her hand drawn maps were masterly and got us where we needed to go. We left with regret after a short stay and would recommend a stay at this farmhouse to anyone.

Thank you Christiane - and for your private feedback. I'm glad you had such a nice stay and we would love to have you back any time. Kind regards Helen

Many thanks!

Merci Beaucoup a vous Lucile! C'était une plaisir.

  • I have been visiting the beautiful Burren for almost 20 years and finding Helen’s farmhouse is one of the best discoveries I’ve made. It is the perfect place to stay awhile and discover this wonderful part of the west coast of Ireland. The location is fantastic, feeling remote yet within hailing distance of a pub and with fantastic walks starting from the doorstep. The farmhouse is lovely – traditional with a chic twist - the room is fabulously comfortable with fluffy pillows, robes, towels, local handmade soap. But the best bit, the bit that makes it super-special – are your hosts. The very lovely Helen and Enda are not only friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and thoughtful but they embody the vibrant spirit of this amazing place. Needless to say, I didn’t want to leave.

It was really lovely to have you. Glad you enjoyed it as much as we did!

  • We had a very pleasant stay with Helen and her husband. Helen is a fantastic host: friendly, communicative and helpful. She provided us with lots of information about the area, which was great. The farmhouse is lovely and lies in the middle of a beautiful area. The room is tidy, cosy and has many extras, such as soap, nice big towels and bathrobes. We definitely recommend staying here!

Thanks Mischa! Sorry the cycling didn't come off, but maybe next time. We are having a few lovely sunny days now - like summer - but the evenings have definitely cooled off. Hope you're getting the same now in NL. Kind regards, Helen

I am English and have lived in the Burren for 10 years. I really love it here - the scenery is something else and the Burren offers 'Big Sky' of the type I've only otherwise seen in Africa. Despite the fact that our mountains are in truth hills, when you're on top of them you feel like you're on top of the world and the views down into the valleys and the sea are simply spectacular. Before settling here and marrying a wonderful local man, I lived in London and worked in the City. I came here for a week to visit family and fell in love with the area as soon as I arrived - total calm and peace, but also 'mighty craic' (great fun). While the intermittent phone coverage and low-tech lifestyle might initially feel 20th century it only adds to the ability to truly take a break from 'normal' life, something that is harder and harder to do. I have since re-trained (at Vidal Sassoon) and am now a mobile hairdresser. I love travelling (big trips include driving from London to Capetown & a year in New Zealand), film, cooking and eating good food & wine, reading, and walking up our mountains. I speak a bit of French and Italian (lots of mistakes but lots of willingness!) and am happy to welcome guests of any type from any part of the world. Whether you come to stay in our cottage or up at the big house, we would welcome you as a friend who could spend as much or as little time with us as you wanted. We have lots of information about the local area and are happy to advise and help you access local activities where we can. Life Motto: Eat life with a big spoon; Feed the good dog.
