ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods

Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon.

Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.

Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Han River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.

Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east.

Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.

Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more.

Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

HOUSE RULES:Please read the guide book as soon as you get into my place, especially learn how to use heater system and dispose the garbage.
For example, please set the dial of controlling the temperature to ‘Going out’ when you go out and during daytime. Use the certificated garbage bag for disposing food or items.

  • Had an amazing stay at peter's place! It was definitely felt like home from another home. Had all the necessary accommodations and I would certainly recommend the place to anyone who is interested in staying at peter's flat.

  • The apartment was great and in a convenient location. Very close to Itaewon Station and many bus stops, so it was easy to get to anywhere in the city. The room itself was very clean and comfortable, and had everything you would need like laundry, refrigerator, free internet etc. even all your basic household items were provided too like soap, towels, toilet paper, kitchen supplies etc. And unlike a hotel, the building also has local residents living there too, so you have the feeling of truly "living in" Seoul during your stay.
The nieghborhood is awesome, there's so many restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores ,and small shops around. You can basically find anything you need within a few blocks of the apartment.
I will definitely try to rent from Judy and Peter on my next visit to Korea.

  • Overall, a wonderful budget stay for any solo traveller or for small groups staying in Seoul. The apartment unit has all amenities for basic needs - I found the in-unit laundry and full kitchen utilities especially useful. Furthermore, the hostess, Judy, will do her best to ease your stay at her property and in Seoul in general.

Keep in mind, however, that the building and apartment unit isn't new. While the premises were very clean and organized, there were definitely signs of age, such as door number decorations that were falling off or worn corners around the apartment unit. However, given the rates offered, this is a much better deal than a luxury hotel room.

The unit is located near Itaewon, Seoul's famous international area, where one would find more ethnic diversity than in most other areas. I personally enjoyed coming back to the relaxed milieu of Itaewon after exploring some of the busier parts of Seoul. If I come back again, I would definitely consider booking this place once more.

  • Had a wonderful time staying at Peter and Judy's apt in Itaewon. The apartment itself is spacious and clean, and the location is quite good. Communication with Peter and Judy was very fast, as they were very responsive to messages. I would definitely stay at their apt again if I was back in Seoul.

  • On my way back home to Korea I wanted to visit Seoul for a few days, but was by myself so really didn't want to stay in a hostel. This place was exactly what I was looking for. It is easy to get to any place in the city from Iteawon and the place was clean and comfortable with everything that you need either for a few days or a longer stay. The only real downside is that with luggage, it is a bit of a walk from either of the subway stations, but this didn't bother me. Peter and Judy are friendly and are quick to reply to any questions you may have.

  • The apartment was way beyond our expectations for cleanliness and comfort. The hosts were very friendly, available, and accommodating. They did not cut corners on the quality of the mattress, bed linens, cooking utensils, appliances, etc and that made the difference for us between a good stay and a wonderful one! The location is ideal as well. Thanks so much for giving us such a pleasant experience in Itaewon, Peter and Judy!

  • This apartment is ideal for single travelers or couples wishing to stay in a clean, centrally-located and well equipped apartment in Seoul. It has especially good cab "feng shui" -- even in rush hour we were able to hail taxis very quickly. Peter and Judy are extremely quick to respond to any questions. Easy, safe, and convenient with super fast wifi to boot.
