ITAEWON : The Global Community in Seoul: Global Fashions and Foods

Itaewon is a unique place in Seoul where one can meet people of diverse nationalities and cultures. There is a popular joke saying that international residents may not know Seoul, but they know Itaewon.

Seoul even designated Itaewon as its first ‘Special Tourism District,’ to highlight it as a destination for internationals to enjoy a diversity of culture, shopping, and entertainment experiences.

Itaewon is in the middle of Yongsan-gu, which borders the northern part of the Han River. It is also close to Seoul Station, Myeong-dong, and Namsan Mountain. The formation of this exotic and global tourism site is closely associated with modern Korean history.

Itaewon typically refers to the street full of stores, restaurants, and stalls over 1.4 kilometers between Itaewon 1-dong and Hannam 2-dong in the east.

Fashion shops specialize in various imported clothes, leather goods, fur goods, handbags, shoes, and antique furniture. Big and tall sizes unavailable in other areas are well-stocked, and experienced tailors offer customized clothes.

Another one of Itaewon’s many draws is its diverse food culture, which features cuisine from around world. Restaurants right behind Hamilton Hotel form a type of exhibition hall for international foods from Korea, New York, London, India, Thailand, China, Greece, Pakistan, Italy, France, Mexico, Australia, and more.

Unique flavors, exotic interiors, and diverse nationalities help to make Itaewon befittingly ‘the global village in Seoul.’

  • Had a wonderful time staying at Peter and Judy's apt in Itaewon. The apartment itself is spacious and clean, and the location is quite good. Communication with Peter and Judy was very fast, as they were very responsive to messages. I would definitely stay at their apt again if I was back in Seoul.

  • On my way back home to Korea I wanted to visit Seoul for a few days, but was by myself so really didn't want to stay in a hostel. This place was exactly what I was looking for. It is easy to get to any place in the city from Iteawon and the place was clean and comfortable with everything that you need either for a few days or a longer stay. The only real downside is that with luggage, it is a bit of a walk from either of the subway stations, but this didn't bother me. Peter and Judy are friendly and are quick to reply to any questions you may have.

  • The apartment was way beyond our expectations for cleanliness and comfort. The hosts were very friendly, available, and accommodating. They did not cut corners on the quality of the mattress, bed linens, cooking utensils, appliances, etc and that made the difference for us between a good stay and a wonderful one! The location is ideal as well. Thanks so much for giving us such a pleasant experience in Itaewon, Peter and Judy!

  • This apartment is ideal for single travelers or couples wishing to stay in a clean, centrally-located and well equipped apartment in Seoul. It has especially good cab "feng shui" -- even in rush hour we were able to hail taxis very quickly. Peter and Judy are extremely quick to respond to any questions. Easy, safe, and convenient with super fast wifi to boot.

  • My wife came to visit me in Korea and after searching and comparing quite a few different places, we finally decided on a flat with Peter and Judy. Because my wife was coming for 45 days we needed a place that included many of the amenities required for daily living, without breaking our bank. We had everything that we needed and if there was something that wasn't provided, Peter and Judy were very helpful in helping us acquire it.
The location was perfect for us, an 8 min walk from the Yongsan Army base commissary gate (#6), and a 3 min bus ride to the main strip in Itaewon. There is a good amount of walking involved sometimes but you come to learn that is everywhere in Korea. There are many dining choices around the neighborhood. We enjoyed many late night meals from the Chicken and Hof location right next door and especially from Taco de Burro located just underneath it. If you prefer to cook your own meal, almost everything you need to do so is provided. There are various other Korean restaurants and shops nearby, as well as a Paris Baugette on the corner. There is a market nearby and a 24hr convenience store located just across the street. The neighborhood feels safe no matter what time you are out and about. There is a police station around the corner and the embassies of many countries are just up the hill.
The best part about the flat had to be the bed. Many places in Korea don't offer such good sized beds and it was certainly much appreciated. The A/C more than held up to the humid summer days and nights. There is no divider between the toilet and the shower but this is very common in Korea. The internet is very fast and we never had any breaks in service no matter the weather. The tablet they provided was very helpful, just be sure to sign out of any websites before you leave. The building was generally quiet and peaceful, although there was one tenant who had a few noisy late nights. We were awake anyway so it didn't really disturb us but Peter and Judy contacted us before we could say anything to apologize for the noise and to let us know it had been taken care of. Peter and Judy were very helpful during our stay. Whatever questions we had they were precise and prompt in their responses. They dropped by a couple times just to make sure we were doing well and we had the pleasure of meeting their adorable daughter. My wife sprained her ankle towards the end of her stay and even though she has been gone more than 2 weeks we still got a message the other day asking how her ankle was doing.
Overall, my wife and I would highly recommend staying with Peter and Judy. This was a wonderful experience we will remember for a lifetime.
