La Grange is a perfect holiday home. It is set high on a ridge by the edge of a tiny hamlet overlooking rolling countryside. The original oak-beamed barn complements the sunken garden as you step outside. There is a large open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area. A further large but 'hidden' extension contains the bedrooms & bathrooms over two floors. This division between communal and private space works perfectly. There are two double bedrooms (one on the mezzanine), two twin-bedrooms and two bathrooms (bath, shower, whb & wc) There is a laundry room with washing machine downstairs. Much thought and craftsmanship has gone into the house within its garden setting and wonderful views. From here you can venture out for long walks, horse riding, kayaking expeditions, tennis, golf, fishing, visit the market town of Riberac, or visit historic Brantome & Perigeaux nearby. Wine tasting in St Emilion, head to the caves of Les Eyzies, or hit the beaches near Bordeaux. However (be warned) it takes an effort to trade up the serenity you already have around you! Bed linen & towels included. House help is available on request (including babysitting.)
The nearest shops (butcher, baker, general store, hair salon, Hotel, cafes & restaurants) are in Verteillac, a charming small town 2km away. The larger town of Riberac (with Friday market) is a 20 minutes drive. Angouleme takes 45 minutes while Periguex and Bergerac are a short hours drive. Any direction takes you through sleepy villages, fields, along forests and rivers, always to a town that fascinates when you get there.
Angouleme has a TGV station with car hire facility alongside. Bordeaux (a 2hr drive), has an airport & car hire. It is also the TGV rail-terminal from Paris.
Bergerac (a 1hr drive) is the nearest airport for Ryaniar, Flybee, Easyjet etc. It also has taxi and car-hire facilities.
Note that public transport in the Dordogne is scarce and you will definitely need a vehicle to get round and about.
The house will be clean & ready for your arrival. There is a more detailed 'instruction book' that you will see in the lounge. Kindly put any soiled house linen in the laundry room and close all taps on departure. There are large refuse bins, collected weekly, located conveniently nearby. Details on board in kitchen.
The house works on its own septic system so please do not place anything other than toilet paper into the wc's.
Always remember to close the upstairs Velux windows before going out in case it rains while away.
There is spare gas bottle for the kitchen hob if needed (the oven is electric).
A large electric geyser automatically heats the house water.

We (owners) live in Kenya. Please be considerate with our house. Thank you.
We had the most perfect week at La Grange. The house was everything we could have wished for and more. The open plan living area and the spacious garden with its magnificent views across the fields made it the ideal holiday home. Rob and Fi were most welcoming hosts.
A lovely house owned by a friendly and helpful host. Rob always replied to any email enquiries straight away and, as he doesn't live locally, he has arranged for the house to be looked after by an English woman who lives locally.
Our 3 children loved exploring the gardens and hunting for geckos. They particularly enjoyed splashing in the local rivers, lakes and outdoor pools. Mum, Dad and Granny enjoyed the peace and tranquility in the evenings (post kids going to bed!).
The surrounding area us beautiful, Brantome was a favourite of ours and there is plenty to do to keep the kids occupied.
We would definitely recommend this accommodation.
Five of us [four adults, one three-year-old] spent a week at La Grange, after effortless communication with the excellent hosts Rob and Fi [they are incredibly generous to share their magical home with guests]. One member of our group had spent his boyhood summers in the Perigord Vert, near Coutures and Verteillac. What would he think of La Grange? We had no idea what to expect. When we arrived to the house, our friend stood at the edge of the cornfield and cried. It really was that beautiful. Everything about it—the bucolic setting, the extraordinary converted-barn-turned-holday-home, the sunsets, the local wines, cheeses, cepes, and fruits, dinner in the garden under the giant fig—was better than our dreams about what a French holiday could be. The three-year-old spent hours in the garden chasing insects and lizards, or happily inside coloring at the large farm table with the breezes and sunlight streaming into the spacious open kitchen and great room. We took easy trips to Perigeaux, Bergerac, Riberac, Brantome, Aubeterre, and Lac Jemaye [there's a good swimming beach there, as well as one on the Dronne River near Aubeterre]. The tiny town of Verteillac, within easy [and gorgeous] walking distance, has cafes and a boulangerie, and Merlaud's, an amazing home shop selling everything from first rate wines and local foie gras to dish soap and dust mops. But our most beautiful moments were in the garden at La Grange; one evening the enormous corn field at the edge of the property was illuminated by a brilliant rainbow. It might be the quietest place on earth, with only the occasional sound of the wind rustling the corn. The most beautiful holiday—we are already planning our return trip.
We had a fabulous time at La Grange this August!
The house has a great atmosphere and has everything one needs to have a good time. The garden, although open, is very safe for kids which means that parents can relax. We had invited friends with their children for the first few days and they also loved it.
Coutures is close to Verteillac which has an outdoors swiming pool (in the summer) and not far from Riberac which has a great market on Fridays. There are also many
outdoors activities to do within 20min drive.
Finally, the communication with Rob was perfect and he always made sure our queries were answered quickly. We
would not hesitate to recommand La Grange for people
looking for a taste of rural France. Thank you Rob!
Es ist ein wunderbares Haus in Coutures mit viel Platz und sehr geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Es hat uns ehr gut gefallen.

The de Boers are a family of four. We live in the leafy suburbs of Nairobi. Husband Rob is the builder in the family, mama Fi(ona) has green fingers, daughter Jess is a qualified eco-warrior & son Alan works as an Aquaculturalist. As a family one of our favorite things is to be on safari in Africa. Rob & the kids head off on their motor bikes whenever possible. Jess & Al mountain bike, kite surf and more. We play tennis & walk lots, We like to be fit !
We bought the Barn in 1979 and slowly converted it to its present state. We believe we are very lucky to have this unique location & we hope that anyone staying there will enjoy this lovely space with its fine views of rolling unspoiled countryside that remain to this day.....happily, remarkably, still unchanged !
We then left France for a while. Later we acquired another ruin, this time on the Island of Lamu (off the Kenya coast.) The remains of an 18thC Swahili house, It is now an extraordinary house, beyond the scope of this remit (but if you want to rent something truly exotic....... contact herewith).
The Barn is now long since finished and we go there when we can and rent it when we can't. We love it there and it's part of the family. You will too, Welcome.
