Historic home with salvaged details

An 1890s home on the National Register, restored with salvaged floors, farmhouse cabinets, and a clawfoot tub

Beth is a standout host

Guests consistently describe the space as cozy and thoughtfully stocked, and many mention Beth by name as a standout host
"The best Airbnb stateside!" according to one guest review. Located in the heart of the vibrant NewBo neighborhood, this cozy and eclectic space is the upstairs apartment of an 1890s era home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once slated for demolition, the Heart House was fully restored to include a first floor art gallery and a second floor Airbnb. Guests especially love the clawfoot tub (unless mobility is an issue) with rainfall showerhead, plus locally made bath products.

The space
Furnished with a mix of salvaged materials (clawfoot tub with rainfall shower head, farmhouse kitchen cabinets, flooring saved from three different buildings), up cycled furniture and lighting, and high end appliances, including counter height washer/dryer in the kitchen. Queen platform bed in bedroom, two sleeper sofas (extra long double mattresses) in living room. 550 sq. feet. In the middle of the historic New Bohemia neighborhood. Perfect for weekend getaway or for business travelers who want the comforts of home. Note that the first floor has a commercial tenant with shop hours of 10-5, Wednesday-Saturday, so be mindful of their zen art studio space. ALSO, be aware that getting to the apartment requires climbing stairs and the vintage clawfoot tub does not have handles for accessing. The space may not be a great fit if you have mobility issues.

Guest access
Guests have private exterior access to the second floor apartment.

Other things to note
This is a second floor apartment accessed by a private outdoor staircase. The salvaged clawfoot tub does not have handles for accessing, so the space may not be a good fit for anyone with mobility issues. Dogs are allowed with prior approval, $10/dog. No cats allowed, for allergy reasons. There are neighborhood community cats on the property.

Where I went to school: University of Iowa
My work: Preservationist/host
I’m a writer/preservationist/travel addict who works to save historic buildings. As the next best thing, I salvage and sell historic architectural materials. I recycle what can't be reproduced in quality and craftsmanship, with examples of this featured throughout my Airbnb. Until time travel is made possible, I make do with trips around the world, and note what makes accommodations comfortable, complete, and unique.
