About this listing
If you are a nature lover who is also interested in a cultural experience, this is for you!
We offer our cabina and new studio apartment, both hand-crafted with care and creativity, nestled against the forest above the creek. We hope that you enjoy the tranquility of our tiny neighborhood just outside of town and revel in its rich natural and cultural diversity. Your closest neighbors will include mostly the furred and feathered type. Right from bed, you can be dazzled by the presence of frequent visitors at your window--our resident sloth, long-tailed manakin, squirrel cuckoo, blue-crowned motmot and more! If you forget your alarm clock, don't fret! Our resident rooster will give you a wake-up call at the perfect moment for a birding walk in our back forest.
If you are interested in human interaction, you could also learn about traditional Costa Rican agriculture from our neighbor Rodolfo,or visit with any or all of the members of our bilingual family across the yard. We are passionate about sharing our love for our community and the magic of our natural setting. Beth can provide a special perspective as a Canadian teacher who found her true home here, and Manolo offers the life-long connection as well as guided naturalist tours of the surrounding areas. Nati and Amaro, at 14 and 10, round out the picture as they gracefully dance between worlds.
Both homes are completely furnished with the major appliances, hot water, internet access and the extra bonus of artistic features like hand-painted tiles, hardwood floors, and local artwork.
Santa Elena/Monteverde includes a wide range of smaller communites that lie along the border between the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste. We are situated on the top of a mountain in the Tilaran mountain range with views of Arenal Volcano from afar. It is about a 3 hour drive as you wind your way up from the international highway, with spectacular views of the San Luis valley below along the route. You can travel here through Las Juntas or Sardinal. Escape the heat of the lowlands as you climb into our green mountain home!
Monteverde is most famous for its cloud forest, left as a watershed by the original Costa Rican and Quaker residents. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including much for the ecologically minded tourist with options for both education and adventure. Enjoy a guided day or night tour of many trail systems with a local naturalist, visit the Butterfly Garden, Bat Museum, or Frog Pond, whiz through a zipline canopy tour, or search out local artists at their galleries. . Music lovers can choose from the weekly concerts of the Monteverde Music Festival that enhance the ambiance for a 2 month period starting in January with professional Costa Rican musicians, or the Saturday night square dance at the Friends school and latin dancing in Santa Elena which are year-round events. . Monteverde is the perfect site both for nature lovers and those interested in rich cultural diversity.

Interaction with Guests
We leave this up to our guests--some people like to weave themselves right into our family rhythms and others prefer more privacy and independence. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone who has stayed with us, no matter their style of being.
We live in a rural neighborhood--Costa Rican neighbors on one side and forest/creek on the other. We offer an off the beaten track feel, but not too far out of town and access to tourist attractions. Great birding right outside your door!

No smoking, no inside pets, no parties. We offer and appreciate a family atmosphere
Simply wonderful. We stayed 3 nights at Beth and Manolo hidden place. What an amazing place to stay. But away from all the touristic attractions but easily accessible with a rented car ( highly advised 4x4)
Beth came to town to meet us, helped us book tours, advised us on places to eat and what to see. When we arrived at the cabina a. Great smell of baked cake welcomed us as well as a home made passion fruit juice. So tasty.
Aside from the wonderful host who one of the best hosts I have met, the house itself is very well organized with all needed kitchenware for cooking your own food.
The rooms, though on the small side, had huge windows facing the forest.
You can see the love and attention to every detail in this house
Thank you so very much Beth, it was such a special stay
We arrived at Beth's place and we're welcomed with a banaabread baking in the oven, there where fresh fruits and flowers waiting for us and the house was lovely. We felt at home straight away. Memories we will cherish from our stay are looking out of our bed and see the hummingbird fly around, seeing our first sloth, our hikes around the area and ofcourse the wonderfull Beth herself! We can't recommend this place enough! And Beth, if you ever want to stay in the Netherlands, we would love a houseswap for the summer!
We loved staying at Beth and Manolo's beautiful forest hideaway! The house was adorable, very clean and stocked with all the essentials we needed (as well as homemade banana bread and fresh squeezed passionfruit juice!) Beth and her whole family are so kind and helpful and the location couldn't be better. There's a great walking path right near the house and a coffee plantation just across the way. Definitely a highlight of our trip!
Kerri! I do hope that the boys can stay in touch across the miles! I think that Amaro has some contact info that will help that happen. I am sending you the most positive of sloth finding vibes...one of our visiting sloths showed up today and I gave it a wee talking to about not having graced us with its presence during your visit...tho was just so pleased to see it that it wasn´t too harsh of a scolding. Greetings to all!
My girlfriend and I booked Beth's place for 2 nights. We liked it so much we stayed for a third and would have happily stayed longer. Beth had delicious homemade banana bread and passion fruit juice waiting for us on arrival which we only finished on the third day. The cabin was very clean, dry and comfortable. We saw innumerable humming birds and butterflies from our bedroom window which looked directly into the forest. The kitchen was fully equipped and we were able to make some great meals. Beth was such a welcoming and warm host and both herself and Manolo were also very helpful regarding advice about activities in the surrounding area.
It was only a 5 minute drive from Santa Elena so we were within easy reach of everything but had plenty of peace, quiet and privacy.
Would definitely recommend and would happily stay there again!
Beth greeted us as we drove in and had homemade banana bread for us baking in the little oven at the house. There was a large bowl of fresh tropical fruits and homemade fresh fruit juice for us, too! It was also great having many of the essential spices and condiments available, such as sugar, salt, pepper and oil as well as many other spices. We added a new one during our stay. We took advantage of Manolo being a naturalist guide and thoroughly enjoyed a morning tour of the cloud forest with him, which included an up close hummingbird viewing area. Beth also helped is out with laundry detergent and took in our clothes from the clothes line when the rain came. They are both delightful and very accommodating and helpful. They set up several other tours for us--a coffee plantation and zip lining--and had restaurant recommendations. The house they built is absolutely charming and well appointed, with lots of personal touches and a resident sloth, who was away for a few days during our stay. I highly recommend staying here!
Beth was an amazing host, she greeting us with fresh baked banana bread and passion fruit juice. She also helped with booking our actives and suggested a delicious local restaurant for us to try. Her place was very nice, clean, and well stocked. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook our own meals, and Beth even left some toys out for our daughter to play with during our stay. We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience at the Monteverde Forest Hideaway, and hope to some day go back!

About the Host, Beth
We are a bi-cultural family who is passionate about sharing the magic of the place we call home. We strive to live as naturally and locally based as possible. Nati and Beth love music and Amaro and Manolo live for soccer. We all love to eat, though we don't always agree on what should be on the menu.
