If you are a nature lover who is also interested in a cultural experience, this is for you!

We offer our cabina and studio apartment, both hand-crafted with care and creativity, nestled against the forest above the creek. We hope that you enjoy the tranquility of our tiny neighborhood just outside of town and revel in its rich natural and cultural diversity. Your closest neighbors will include mostly the furred and feathered type, though we do have a family who live on the other side of the entry lane. Right from bed, you can be dazzled by the presence of frequent visitors at your window--our resident sloth, long-tailed manakin, squirrel cuckoo, blue-crowned motmot and more! If you forget your alarm clock, don't fret! Our neighbour's roosters will give you a wake-up call at the perfect moment for a birding walk in our back forest.

If you are interested in human interaction, you are welcome to visit with any or all of the members of our bilingual family across the yard. We are passionate about sharing our love for our community and the magic of our natural setting. Beth can provide a special perspective as a Canadian teacher who found her true heart home here, and Manolo offers the life-long connection as well as guided naturalist tours of the surrounding areas. Nati, our 17 year old, is finishing her high school on Vancouver Island, but her brother Amaro, 13, rounds out the picture as he gracefully dances between worlds.

Both homes are completely furnished with the major appliances, hot water, internet access and the extra bonus of artistic features like hand-painted tiles, hardwood floors, and local artwork. To rent the apartment or take advantage of a special price to rent both, see the listing Casa Libelula also under Monteverde Forest Hideaway as a 2 person accomodation.

Santa Elena/Monteverde includes a wide range of smaller communites that lie along the border between the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste. We are situated on the top of a mountain in the Tilaran mountain range with views of Arenal Volcano from afar. It is about a 3 hour drive as you wind your way up from the international highway, with spectacular views of the San Luis valley below along the route. You can travel here through Las Juntas or Sardinal. Escape the heat of the lowlands as you climb into our green mountain home!

Monteverde is most famous for its cloud forest, left as a watershed by the original Costa Rican and Quaker residents. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including much for the ecologically minded tourist with options for both education and adventure. Enjoy a guided day or night tour of many trail systems with a local naturalist, visit the Butterfly Garden, Bat Museum, or Frog Pond, whiz through a zipline canopy tour, or search out local artists at their galleries. . Music lovers can choose from the weekly concerts of the Monteverde Music Festival that enhance the ambiance for a 2 month period starting in January with professional Costa Rican musicians, or the Saturday night square dance at the Friends school and latin dancing in Santa Elena which are year-round events. Monteverde is the perfect site both for nature lovers and those interested in rich cultural diversity.

clothes line, forested property

We leave this up to our guests--some people like to weave themselves right into our family rhythms and others prefer more privacy and independence. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone who has stayed with us, no matter their style of being.

We live in a rural neighborhood--Costa Rican neighbors on one side and forest/creek on the other. We offer an off the beaten track feel, but not too far out of town and access to tourist attractions. Great birding right outside your door!

Monteverde Forest Hideaway is an extraordinary place. Nestled at the edge of the forest, we were serenaded daily by a stunning variety of birds. Beth and Manolo are gracious hosts and went above and beyond in assisting us to navigate the area and make the most of our time in Santa Elena/Monteverde. This is a wonderful place to stay and we give it the best of recommendations!

Beth and Manalo's place was such a relaxing place to be. The house was so spacious for the five of us!!! This home is equipped with everything that you need in the kitchen to cook your own meals. There are a couple of comfortable hammock chairs on a back porch looking out onto the forest where we observed many birds and butterflies?Natural beautiful trees and plants surrounded us. Beth and Manalo were very gracious hosts! They were so very helpful with suggesting areas of interest and helping us with getting around! They are beautiful people in a very beautiful country! We feel that we have made new friends in a country far from us in Montana.

Theresa! Greetings from all of us---including the baby sloth! We so enjoyed sharing time with you. I was thinking of you just this morning as I filled those bottles by the little trees and noticed that some of the ones that looked sad and dry are starting to sprout new wee leaves!! Somehow I knew that you would join me in my dance of joy. Happy gardening!

Beth and Manolo's place even exceeds the pictures. Super homey and rustic, with all the amenities you might need. Beth was also super helpful in arranging guided tours. Wish we would have stayed even longer!

Our group absolutely loved our stay in Monteverde. Beth greeted us with DELICIOUS banana bread and fresh juice, and she was very helpful in arranging a coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour one day, and a ziplining and hanging bridges tour the next day. Both were absolutely fantastic. The house itself was gorgeous, well-decorated, and very comfortable. We had plenty of room for our group of 5, and our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. Thank you!

Response from Beth:
“Beth and Manollo were such great hosts, that it is hard to imagine anyone doing better. Not only was the small house in the woods perfect for both comfort and space, it was actually in the forest in which Sloths lived. Manollo guided us on a day visit In Monteverde nature reserve and later on a night tour in the forest - which was simply amazing. Beth was just so welcoming - with fresh fruit in our kitchen and even hot banana bread on arrival. They really made our stay in Monteverde memorable and we cannot recommend them highly enough! They deserve 6 stars, but Air B&B only allow 5... David & Jayne Hall Hard to think of anything that I would change.” David and Jayne---I hope that it is OK that I copied and pasted your private review comments here as well, as we so appreciate how positive they are and wonder if you intended those to appear in the public review. We so enjoyed getting to meet you both and hope that our paths cross again some day! Beth

Our stay at Beth's property can be summed up in one word, fantastic!!! Having stayed at a number of AirBnB properties now, we can easily say Beth is the most hospitable AirBnB host we've had. It started at check in- where we were offered delicious, warm, fresh from the oven banana bread - and lasted right through check out, when Beth returned to us the commission money normally lost in the tour and adventure scheduling shuffle . In between she even guided us on a walk from the property to a coffee tour! Just a great person and host! The property was clean and just as the photos and description offered. A truly peaceful forest hideaway. 10/10 would stay again!

We are a bi-cultural family who is passionate about sharing the magic of the place we call home. We strive to live as naturally and locally based as possible. Nati and Beth love music and Amaro and Manolo live for soccer. We all love to eat, though we don't always agree on what should be on the menu.
