If you are a nature lover who is also interested in a cultural experience, this is for you!
We offer our cabina and new studio apartment, both hand-crafted with care and creativity, nestled against the forest above the creek. We hope that you enjoy the tranquility of our tiny neighborhood just outside of town and revel in its rich natural and cultural diversity. Your closest neighbors will include mostly the furred and feathered type. Right from bed, you can be dazzled by the presence of frequent visitors at your window--our resident sloth, long-tailed manakin, squirrel cuckoo, blue-crowned motmot and more! If you forget your alarm clock, don't fret! Our resident rooster will give you a wake-up call at the perfect moment for a birding walk in our back forest.
If you are interested in human interaction, you could also learn about traditional Costa Rican agriculture from our neighbor Rodolfo,or visit with any or all of the members of our bilingual family across the yard. We are passionate about sharing our love for our community and the magic of our natural setting. Beth can provide a special perspective as a Canadian teacher who found her true home here, and Manolo offers the life-long connection as well as guided naturalist tours of the surrounding areas. Nati and Amaro, at 14 and 10, round out the picture as they gracefully dance between worlds.
Both homes are completely furnished with the major appliances, hot water, internet access and the extra bonus of artistic features like hand-painted tiles, hardwood floors, and local artwork.
Santa Elena/Monteverde includes a wide range of smaller communites that lie along the border between the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste. We are situated on the top of a mountain in the Tilaran mountain range with views of Arenal Volcano from afar. It is about a 3 hour drive as you wind your way up from the international highway, with spectacular views of the San Luis valley below along the route. You can travel here through Las Juntas or Sardinal. Escape the heat of the lowlands as you climb into our green mountain home!
Monteverde is most famous for its cloud forest, left as a watershed by the original Costa Rican and Quaker residents. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including much for the ecologically minded tourist with options for both education and adventure. Enjoy a guided day or night tour of many trail systems with a local naturalist, visit the Butterfly Garden, Bat Museum, or Frog Pond, whiz through a zipline canopy tour, or search out local artists at their galleries. . Music lovers can choose from the weekly concerts of the Monteverde Music Festival that enhance the ambiance for a 2 month period starting in January with professional Costa Rican musicians, or the Saturday night square dance at the Friends school and latin dancing in Santa Elena which are year-round events. . Monteverde is the perfect site both for nature lovers and those interested in rich cultural diversity.
clothes line, forested property
We leave this up to our guests--some people like to weave themselves right into our family rhythms and others prefer more privacy and independence. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone who has stayed with us, no matter their style of being.
We live in a rural neighborhood--Costa Rican neighbors on one side and forest/creek on the other. We offer an off the beaten track feel, but not too far out of town and access to tourist attractions. Great birding right outside your door!
Public bus from San Jose to Santa Elena 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. or shuttle services (eg. Interbus) with varied schedules. In Santa Elena/Monteverde, there is good taxi infrastructure ($5 from our house to town) and public bus goes from Santa Elena to the Monteverde Reserve several times daily ($2.) Parking for cars right beside our rentals.
To confirm, the cabina can fit up to 6 people, but for extra space and comfort, we recommend combining the apartment and the cabina for large groups! For a couple, check out our listing for the apartment alone--Monteverde Forest Hideaway--Casa Libelula.
Beth was a wonderful communicator. She had valuable information and suggestions.
Manolo was an excellent host and guide. He took good care of me and my family by picking us up from the bus stop, sharing information about his home town, making suggestions on where to eat and what to do.
The houses were great, our beds were cozy and comforable, not hot at all. The showers were warm and the wifi worked well in the apartment. The banana bread that Manolo baked was an unexpected, but wonderful surprise.
We definately pland to share this wonderful place with other family members and friends.
This experience was perfect in every way! Beth was out of town but provided exceptional support, answering all of my questions promptly and with great consideration. Her husband Manolo was an amazing host - it felt like we were staying with an old friend, even though we had only just met. My 12 year old son was equally charmed, and reports "Manolo is the best!" He gave us important info on the road construction schedule that I wasn't aware of, and returned home again to give us our keys when we'd forgotten them. Manolo is a trained naturalist guide and the tour that he gave us of the Monteverde forest was the best that we had during our stay in Costa Rica - he is highly knowledgeable, and his presentation style is interactive and engaging. It was also very affordable, with a discount for people staying at their B&B. I highly recommend that you take him up on his tour offer! The house itself was impeccably clean and lovely, with beautiful details like a fresh bouquet of flowers, a big bowl of tropical fruit, homemade banana bread (my son ate the whole loaf, it was delicious!), and hand-crafted furniture. Our favorite spot was the porch, overlooking a flowering tree visited by hummingbirds and butterflies. It was very sweet and private, on a quiet street. I really can't say enough good things about Beth and Manolo and their place, I wish we could give it 6 stars! It will always be at the heart of our Costa Rica memories.
Definitely one of our favorite stops on our trip around Costa Rica! Beth & Manolo were very welcoming and amazing hosts. They had great recommendations and suggestions of things to do in the area, as well as setting up our day trips. We also had a night tour with Manolo, which surpassed our expectations (highly recommend doing it). We also just loved enjoying their beautiful property & views, as well as spending lots of time on the porch.
The accommodation at Bet was just perfect, we felt as if we arrived in our family. Beth, her husband and children are a very nice family and welcomed us very warmly. Beth baked banana bread for us and I need to have the recipe, because it was fantastic! She also made a small food suply for us, because we arrived late and the shoping is only possible in the nearby town! Accommodation is a beautiful, Manuelo built the houses by him self , and there's nothing we missed! We spent at Beth and her family two beautiful days! Thank You Very Much!!!
Beth and Manolo are awesome hosts!! We saw so many creatures and plants! Our first morning at the Monteverde Forest Hideaway, we saw an emerald toucanette, a sloth, and a keel-billed toucan, all from the house!! Manolo is a guide at the Monteverde national park. We used his services and did a wonderfully guided morning hike though the park and a night hike around the property. Manolo even glues the soles back on my shoes for me! I HIGHLY recommend Beth and Manolo and the Monteverde Forest hideaway!!
We had a great time at the Monteverde Forest Hideaway, hosted by Beth, Manolo and their two children! Beth was very helpful before we departed for Costa Rica--she helped me to figure out the best places to go in Monteverde (there are many choices) and had reservations for us when we arrived (although she also said they could be changed if we preferred different options). The cabin smelled delicious when we walked in, since Beth had baked some bread for us! There was also plenty of fruit and juice. We were tired from a long travel day, and Beth drove me into town to pick up pizza for dinner! (one thing to note is that it's a pretty good hike to town, about 40 minutes there and 30 minutes back, when you go downhill). The tours she arranged for us were great (horseback riding with Marvin Anchia, Sky Trek zip lines, and a tour of the Monteverde Forest Preserve with Manolo, who is very knowledgeable, having grown up in Monteverde). They also arranged for our transportation from Monteverde to our next stop in Montezuma, and then back to San Jose. They were great hosts, and we felt like we learned a bit about the Costa Rican culture by spending a few days with them! We saw a sloth in their backyard (which Manolo put in his scope so we could see it up close), gave us a sample of sugar cane (and the history of growing it) and took me to a coffee plantation, to get some plants so they can grow their own coffee beans! Lots of fun. Very hospitable hosts! Couldn't imagine a better place to stay in Monteverde.
We loved our stay with Beth and our experience in Monteverde! Beth is an exceptional host who immediately made us feel comfortable and at home in our beautiful, clean and cozy accommodations. The cabin is gorgeous and well equipped with phone, wifi and hot water access should you need it. A warm, freshly baked carrot loaf awaited us upon arrival! Least to say, we were beyond impressed. Beth also helped us make reservations for zip lining and had a handy brochure available to explain all the activities the area has to offer. She really made exploring Monteverde an easy, fun experience. The cabin is in an ideal location, just a short walk uphill to the town centre or a $1 dollar taxi ride if you're carrying lots of luggage. Overall, we can't say enough about her hospitality and our wonderful stay. We wish it could have been longer!
Beth and Manolo have built a beautiful hideaway in Monteverde. Against wise advice we drove up in driving rain, fog, and darkness and still managed to find the property thanks to Beths directions. A bowl of diverse fruits and a loaf of homemade banana bread were a welcome treat after that challenging drive. We accepted the offer of Manolo's guiding services for a hike through the Monteverde Cloud forest. With his help we came to understand the ecosystem and spot a lot of wildlife, we highly recommend his affordable services. Beth was quick to communicate and very accommodating with help booking tours or providing local information. The Monteverde Forest Hideaway is an extremely relaxing and enjoyable place to stay.
A great hideaway from Santa Elana and Monteverde. Cute Cabin in non-touristy area. Interesting trails right out the door.
In addition, you will not find nicer hosts on AirBnB. Beth and Manolo a warm, kind, welcoming people who clearly enjoy meeting and helping there guests. From the welcoming snack to the always available advise and help, they are great folks. Gracias!
We absolutely loved our stay in Monteverde Forest Hideaway, it was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Beth and Manolo went out of their way to accommodate us, even digging out a box of Lego and some wonderful storybooks for our 2 year old son, as well as helping us find a great local guide while they were on holiday. The cabin is fantastic, and the location in the forest was so relaxing and great for spotting wildlife. We would definitely return to Monteverde and to Beth and Manolo's place given the chance!
