Description

The space

If you are a nature lover who is also interested in a cultural experience, this is for you!

We offer our cabina and studio apartment, both hand-crafted with care and creativity, nestled against the forest above the creek. We hope that you enjoy the tranquility of our tiny neighborhood just outside of town and revel in its rich natural and cultural diversity. Your closest neighbors will include mostly the furred and feathered type, though we do have a family who live on the other side of the entry lane. Right from bed, you can be dazzled by the presence of frequent visitors at your window--our resident sloth, long-tailed manakin, squirrel cuckoo, blue-crowned motmot and more! If you forget your alarm clock, don't fret! Our neighbour's roosters will give you a wake-up call at the perfect moment for a birding walk in our back forest.

If you are interested in human interaction, you are welcome to visit with any or all of the members of our bilingual family across the yard. We are passionate about sharing our love for our community and the magic of our natural setting. Beth can provide a special perspective as a Canadian teacher who found her true heart home here, and Manolo offers the life-long connection as well as guided naturalist tours of the surrounding areas. Nati, our 17 year old, is finishing her high school on Vancouver Island, but her brother Amaro, 13, rounds out the picture as he gracefully dances between worlds.

Both homes are completely furnished with the major appliances, hot water, internet access and the extra bonus of artistic features like hand-painted tiles, hardwood floors, and local artwork. To rent the apartment or take advantage of a special price to rent both, see the listing Casa Libelula also under Monteverde Forest Hideaway as a 2 person accomodation.

Santa Elena/Monteverde includes a wide range of smaller communites that lie along the border between the provinces of Puntarenas and Guanacaste. We are situated on the top of a mountain in the Tilaran mountain range with views of Arenal Volcano from afar. It is about a 3 hour drive as you wind your way up from the international highway, with spectacular views of the San Luis valley below along the route. You can travel here through Las Juntas or Sardinal. Escape the heat of the lowlands as you climb into our green mountain home!

Monteverde is most famous for its cloud forest, left as a watershed by the original Costa Rican and Quaker residents. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety of attractions, including much for the ecologically minded tourist with options for both education and adventure. Enjoy a guided day or night tour of many trail systems with a local naturalist, visit the Butterfly Garden, Bat Museum, or Frog Pond, whiz through a zipline canopy tour, or search out local artists at their galleries. . Music lovers can choose from the weekly concerts of the Monteverde Music Festival that enhance the ambiance for a 2 month period starting in January with professional Costa Rican musicians, or the Saturday night square dance at the Friends school and latin dancing in Santa Elena which are year-round events. Monteverde is the perfect site both for nature lovers and those interested in rich cultural diversity.

Interaction with guests

We leave this up to our guests--some people like to weave themselves right into our family rhythms and others prefer more privacy and independence. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know everyone who has stayed with us, no matter their style of being.

The neighborhood

We live in a rural neighborhood--Costa Rican neighbors on one side and forest/creek on the other. We offer an off the beaten track feel, but not too far out of town and access to tourist attractions. Great birding right outside your door!

Getting around

Beth and Monolo were fantastic hosts and so helpful booking all of our activities! I recommend the Don Juan Coffee/chocolate and sugar cane tour! Delicioso! Wish we could have had a few more days! Such a gem! Our whole family loved this small cabin tucked right up into the forest. The location was perfect for us - only 5 minutes into town (we had a rental car) but away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist center. So peaceful. Our favorite spot was the back deck with the hammock chairs facing the forest. It's slightly small for a big family like ours (we're two adults and five kids) but we knew that going in. For four days, we didn't mind, and the house is set up carefully with a well-stocked kitchen and a washing machine, so that helped a lot. The kids were tickled to find children's books and toys in one of the rooms, and to see a sloth and toucan right outside our front door! Beth and Manolo are wonderful hosts. We arrived after a bit of a harrowing day with a sick baby, and they had fresh banana bread and juice waiting for us, plus Beth helped me get what I needed to get everything cleaned up. She also helped me make arrangements to visit a local farm and do Spanish tutoring with a friend of hers, which gave our family an even more rich experience. Thank you for everything! We hope to come back one day!

Beth's place was even better than we expected. The cabin was clean and cute and exactly what we needed for our family of 5. I appreciated all her recommendations of where to eat and what to do while in the Momteverde area. We especially loved the guided day and night tours with Manolo. We learned a ton about the plants and animals and history of Monteverde and we got to see some pretty special animals with his knowledge of the forest. You will love it there!

Omg this place! Book a stay here! Stop thinking about it and just do it! You will regret nothing!!! This has been my favorite Air BNB spot (out of 7 so far) and I didn't break the bank to stay here. Beth is so friendly and very helpful and holy smokes that banana bread and the juice were the best! She left the light on for us so we could find the place and she got us a discount at Selvatura. She's around the corner from the town centre which is just far enough to be in the rainforest. I can't say enough about how beautiful the home and the property are and what are you waiting for book a stay here! It's perfect!

Monteverde Forest Hideaway is an extraordinary place. Nestled at the edge of the forest, we were serenaded daily by a stunning variety of birds. Beth and Manolo are gracious hosts and went above and beyond in assisting us to navigate the area and make the most of our time in Santa Elena/Monteverde. This is a wonderful place to stay and we give it the best of recommendations!

Beth and Manalo's place was such a relaxing place to be. The house was so spacious for the five of us!!! This home is equipped with everything that you need in the kitchen to cook your own meals. There are a couple of comfortable hammock chairs on a back porch looking out onto the forest where we observed many birds and butterflies?Natural beautiful trees and plants surrounded us. Beth and Manalo were very gracious hosts! They were so very helpful with suggesting areas of interest and helping us with getting around! They are beautiful people in a very beautiful country! We feel that we have made new friends in a country far from us in Montana.

Response from Beth:
Theresa! Greetings from all of us---including the baby sloth! We so enjoyed sharing time with you. I was thinking of you just this morning as I filled those bottles by the little trees and noticed that some of the ones that looked sad and dry are starting to sprout new wee leaves!! Somehow I knew that you would join me in my dance of joy. Happy gardening!

Beth and Manolo's place even exceeds the pictures. Super homey and rustic, with all the amenities you might need. Beth was also super helpful in arranging guided tours. Wish we would have stayed even longer!

We are a bi-cultural family who is passionate about sharing the magic of the place we call home. We strive to live as naturally and locally based as possible. Nati and Beth love music and Amaro and Manolo live for soccer. We all love to eat, though we don't always agree on what should be on the menu.
